I know someone who works for the company that is financing the project and I got the latest a few weeks ago. The latest is that there's no movement. I know that a while ago I said that it was Donna Murphy (from another source) but the gent that I know who is legit involved said that it hasn't gone through any casting or workshopping at this point. Elton is still writing and the team is slowly assembling with no cast in mind at all.

Elton John is very young and has plenty of time to do this musical. Loved Billy and The Lion King. He is no Tim Minchin or LMM. But he is very enjoyable

Maybe he'll get a replacement? There's plenty like him to be found...

He's a bit busy at the moment! Isn't he also writing a show with the guy from the Scissor Sisters? I'm sure I saw something from Baz not so long ago.

f***, James Graham as well?! Gah, that's got quality written all over it. Hmm, maybe The Devil has stalled a bit because the new project is more exciting.....

Fingers crossed it bucks the (non-Disney) film to stage musical adaptation trend - even when they’re good they don’t seem to run for long.

I saw a documentary a little while back where Elton John explained that the music and songs had been written about 2 years ago.
They would (obviously) have to be tweaked once fully staged, however the post-production staging has been halted because of COVID.

The first draft was initially written a couple of years ago but they have continued to work on it since. They brought on an additional book writer recently - Kate Weatherhead. ow.ly/7ZV650E9H2JThe above story is about a development retreat the main creatives (sans Elton) did. It looks like Elton and Shaina Taub have re-worked music and lyrics over zoom to fit the new book, and this is the first time they got the chance to get the re-worked version on its feet.

Allison Janney would be a very acceptable Meryl replacement... she can belt a tune and steal any scene with her acting OMG THIS.

It is a total mess. Whether or not it can be fixed only time will tell. I can also see it not going beyond Chicago.

Miranda Priestley must be writing the reviews herself. Vicious! No redeeming features it seems, even the costumes look cheap.

Hmm, though I do kind of wonder if the reviewers have the same idea of what made the film a hit as the fans of the movie do.
Because, uhm, I don’t recall it being the vicious satire the reviewers are saying it was. I do recall it being about moral growth, about resisting the seduction of high fashion and success. Specifically I recall that Miranda claims that Andy is just like her BUT Andy chooses not to become her.
But then how viewers receive the film has always been a bit odd. Like the insistence that the boyfriend is the villain of the piece for questioning how much the job at Runway takes over Andy’s life and if it’s really what she wants to do. But, the thing is - he is *right*. The Runway job isn’t where Andy really wants to be - she is being tempted by its trappings (Miranda is ‘the Devil’ of the title!).
The musical does need to feature lots of bitchy laughs, though. And the costumes need to be really, really good, and the music (obvs) needs to be memorable. Because it is meant to be seductive and gorgeous, or the moral doesn’t work. So maybe it’s the execution not the core stuff.
Hey-Ho, we’ll see if/how they decide to re-work it.
