Can't be bothered with the vegan hippy crystals schtick, but I do like her music... this could be interesting.

I just booked this for June. The combination of Boston, a Diane Paulus show, Tom Kitt arrangements, and an Idina Menzel vehicle before she actually does it for Broadway was too tempting.
Apparently it's about family, gender identify and race politics, all the things I hold near and dear to my heart. Interestingly (and before I googled what the show was about), the A.R.T. website that took my donation for a pre-booking had me fill a survey that asked for my race, gender and if I fit in the gender conforming non-binary.

She never signed up for the pre-Broadway run (and there is no word on a Broadway transfer date, cast, theatre, etc). She only did a workshop I believe. Idina will be starring in a play in the summer while this is running in Boston.

I am wondering how it was received in Boston/Cambridge?

^ very well.
But regional press tends to be very supportive to out of town/pre-Broadway trials.
I only read the Boston Globe's review and it was very positive. As most tryouts go, the reoccurring anecdotal feedback is "they need to work on the book". So it seems that it needs to be slightly streamlined, but most of the responses have been positive.

Elizabeth Stanley seems to be a good choice for this role. Congrats to her

I saw the final matinee yesterday.
First of all, it's loud.
Kudos to them for trying to compress every single social cause and issue in one show. To a certain degree, it sort of works, especially for a musical, considering musicals really aren't all that capable of handling very (very) serious issues very well, nor do people who go to them want to be intellectually stimulated as much as they would like to be entertained, or moved at most.. Musicals are good with universal themes and the human experience, but the issues tackled in this show are very specific, despite the fact that they are so timely.
Cast is good, especially Celia Gooding, who WILL walk away with a Tony if this transfers. Mama LaChanze must be very proud. Lauren Patten as Joanne/Jo is also very captivating and gives a very unique performance and got a full standing ovation for You Ought To Know. Besides these two, I honestly didn't care for Mary Jane's character - a basic upper middle class competitive and privileged white woman who gets hooked on opioids. Sorry, no tears from me. Derek Klena needs to stop playing these parts already. He's a bit more capable than playing a high school jock over and over again.
The design of the show is a bit uninspired, and the projections seemed disproportionate with the characters and certainly not crisp or clear. For thee most part Jagged Little Pill felt like a Next to Normal meets Dear Evan Hansen but about sexuality, consent and race. The book is solid and not ironic or cheeky about how it shoe horns the songs as with other jukebox musicals. But for a show that loud, I thought it was heavily muted and a bit dull.
It's not often that you have two out of town tryouts playing simultaneously in the same town, so I'm glad I saw it while I was here. I'm actually not entirely sure what they need to do (or to do anything at all) to make it Broadway ready but I'm glad I saw it during its incubation phase.

That's interesting - when I saw it shortly after opening I found Gooding to be by far the weakest member of the principal cast.
I do agree about it shoving every social issue imaginable into the show though. Bit much.

I saw a clip of Celia Gooding. And she has TALENT LOTS OF TALENT. Why has the transfer not been announced ? I would not be amazed if this was the tony winner. Personally this will be a much better season than last season

I think it will have Hadestown as a stern competitor, and I am waging Hadestown to win Best "Prestige" Musical as the Band's Visit did. But I also think Hadestown will have more popular appeal than Band's Visit.

I think it will be either the Brooks Atkinson, Waitress might call it quits in September or, the Jacobs if The Ferryman doesn't extend again.

I am very excited about this. JLP is one of my favourite albums & I was already planning a trip to NYC in the autumn so it feel like fate that this show is heading there at the same time as me!

Can I just remind everyone about the time that Carl Woodward hallucinated that JLP will tryout at the Trafalgar Studios? And created an internet frenzy about Bernadette Peters doing Hello, Dolly! in London? Please, let's not pay this little man any attention.
Anyway, I'm glad this JLP is moving. I saw it last summer in Boston. I must have posted about it a while ago. They sure tried and basically succeeded in cramming every big and small social issue into this musical. Something about it felt like Next to Normal's less attractive cousin, and something about it felt a little bit flat and monotone. Maybe I was just dizzy because of the sensory overload from Moulin Rouge right across the Charles River. Some great performances in it though, namely the two young ladies Lauren Patten as Jo and Celia Gooding as Frankie. Lauren's "You Outta Know" stopped the show cold for the entire run. Derek Klena plays the older brother in a pretty sorry role, and I would imagine he'll pick Magic Mike in the lead role over a tertiary character in Jagged Little Pill.
I'd be interested to see what changes they made to it.
