€150 for front stalls… 😫

Atrocious, ridiculous, unjustifiable. They may have a 26-piece orchestra, the main character played by a very important actor, and a top-notch cast... but 60% of the venue is 100€ or more. And that should never be a thing. I can win the Tina the musical ticket lottery (and see the show) 6 times for the same price.

As I mentioned when we PM’d the pal I’m visiting is vision impaired so it’s front stalls or nowt I’m afraid! I do like the look of the extended trailer on the homepage though, it looks very 70’s. And there’s a revolve!

I´d suggest emailing them. info@teatrodelsoho.com Perhaps they can help, though they´re not the owners of the venue. So much needs to be done to make musicals in Spain accessible. No such thing as relaxed,close-captioned... performances here.

Also I’m not as familiar with Company as I am with ACL so I wouldn’t get as much out of it in Spanish. I wish the production well!

Very reasonable, given the prices and the lack of an accessibility scheme. There are plenty of other musicals in Madrid that are better priced, though.

I’ve buckled and booked. Just me, pal wasn’t interested when I described it to him (which I was relieved about because I was going to pay 😀). Problem booking with my credit card, failed several times over 2 days. Tried again today and there was 20% off tickets so I just did it and it worked with a debit card. Looking forward to it! 26 piece orchestra!

Well I loved Company tonight. Fantastic cast throughout, Antonio Banderas played it very cool letting the rest of the talented cast shine u til Being Alive when he pulled out all the stops. Set design was mainly a NewYork skyline with metal fire escapes at each side behind which were the fabulous sounding orchestra. This cityscape extended out into the sides of the auditorium with more detailed office buildings, balconies etc. Other than that the on-stage set was minimal with cast moving black boxes on and off. Apart from the bed and a bar table and stools for the nightclub scene that was it although there is a triple revolve which was well used throughout. If it hadn’t been for that it would almost be a staged concert. Stand out apart from AB was Laura Enrech as Amy who was hilarious even though I couldn’t understand what she was saying, brilliant physical comedy. The actor who plays April also excellent and Marta Ribera as Joanne was a very classy performance. Couple of interesting directorial choices {Spoiler - click to view} In the bedroom scene at the end when she says she’ll stay, instead of a weary “ok” AB cruelly shouts NOOOOOat her.
The gay proposition scene is played without dialogue.
After ladies Who Lunch Joanne’s applause is rather cruelly cut short by a line. I thought that was a shame for her because the audience loved her.
Being Alive was played drunk. The Teatro Albéniz is beautiful. Refurbished but with modern seating. Wide, comfortable (although anyone would fidget after 3 hours). When the seats are down the backrest is lowered and tilted forwards over the seat giving a wide space in the row behind for people to pass. When the seat is lowered the backrest raises and tilts backward for comfort. Very nice. A great experience in Madrid tonight ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Note about audience behaviour: Nothing to report! No sweeties or ices on sale, a few people brought in bottles of water and that was it. No slurping, crunching, chewing or clinking. I didn’t even see interval drinks being brought in, not sure if that’s allowed or not.

Really glad you enjoyed it BB, I saw it last year in Malaga, although i don't speak a word of Spanish, but being familiar with Company...i loved it. I have to agree with everything you said...from Joanne's applause being cut short after a fabulous rendition, to Not getting married today being brilliant

A great experience in Madrid tonight ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Glad you enjoyed BurlyBeaR. I also saw it last week and loved it. The 26-piece orchestra sounded gorgeous, and didn´t find a single weak link in the cast. Worth every penny. The Albéniz is indeed a gorgeous venue, so happy to see it open after 14 years.

Interested to know what Antonio Banderas’ attendance has been like for this run if anyone knows? Also I’ve cack handedly tried to Google for reviews for the Madrid production that I might translate to English but failed. How has this gone down in Madrid? Has it been a success?

Also I’ve cack handedly tried to Google for reviews for the Madrid production that I might translate to English but failed. How has this gone down in Madrid? Has it been a success? Antonio hasn´t missed a single show so far. He didn´t miss one in the Málaga run either. An impeccable attendance. Even with the very expensive prices, most performances have sold out. A roaring success. As for how the general public has responded, it´s rated 4,5/5 in the top ticketing site, but there are also many comments in several websites complaining about the pacing and the "lack of spectacular sets and dance numbers". Most Spaniards still need to dissociate musical theatre with huge sets and 15-minute dance routines.

Thank you SuttonPeron. That is indeed impressive for an A list star like Banderas. Kudos to him! I suppose it is a fact that as more big name (Broadway) musicals are staged in Madrid expectations will be raised. If you see The Lion King and then see Company there will be a very stark difference. I said in my comments that it was almost a concert version but the performances and the orchestra more than made up for that. I thought it was wonderful.

Indeed. Though there´s still so much work to be done, Spanish MT has came a long way over the last 25 years. Producing less known shows is still very much a risk for producers, but audiences are very slowly embracing new titles with a less commercial approach, being slightly stricter regarding quality, and understanding what makes a musical excellent. It´s not just about expectations, but showing the audience the infinite possibilities that musical theatre has to offer, perfectly seen in this production, where it´s the orchestra and the acting that are the stars of the show.

Hi musical lovers, I just want to bring you some updates from Spain since the last couple of weeks have been full of news with reagards to Musical Theater. - The new spanish Production cast of Aladdin has been announced last week with Roc Bernadi as Aladdin, Jana Gomez in the role of Jasmine and David COmrie as Genie. Premiere on 24th March and pre-sales seems to be very promising (first days have nearly sold-out), if you are insterested you can try to buy your ticket in the link below (official page) www.stage.es/musicales/aladdin/entradas- Castings Calls for next season's productions: The Book of Mormon (casting closed now) and Legally Blonde (Still open). Looking forward to watching both of them..... but mostly (:-)) The Bok of Mormon. If you love this musical as I do, you will have a great opportunity to wacth in Spanish next season (from September/October this year, dates to be confirmed) - Also Pretty Woman the musical (which is now running in Barcelona) will be moved to Madrid from September onwards. Now, the bad news: 1. Grease, currently running in Barcelona, will close on next 12th February. There are rumours this production will continue on national tour 2. Singing in the rain will close next 19th February 3. The national tour of The Physician (orginal spanish produciton based on Noah Gordon's book) will close next 26th February. Extraordinary performance of this original Spanish production after several years on stage. 4. Godspell (Antonio Banderas Production) closed in Malaga last 8th Jan. I suspect this production will sooner or later come to Madrid & Barcelona, but nothing confirmed yet 5. Last but not least.....Antonio Banderas production of Company will close in Madrid next 14th February (:-(), thanks God we have the spanish cast recording (:-))

Godspell was supposed to come to Madrid, but it got replaced by an extension of Play that goes wrong. So it will eventually come to Madrid when they find an appropriate time and venue. Auditions are currently being held for a production of Chicago (rumored to be a replica production of the iconic staging), and a new non-replica of School of Rock. Other rumors are The Producers in Barcelona, The Phantom of the Opera in Madrid, and Gypsy in Málaga. But those aren´t confirmed just yet. The upcoming season does seem promising, but as always, it´ll all depend on the quality and care behind each new production.

We've just booked 5 nights in Madrid in April (really looking forward to it as we've never been before). We've booked Tick Tick Boom for the Friday night and Aladdin for the Sunday. Is there anything else we should try to fit in? I know quite a few shows are closing before then and I'm not overly fussed about seeing Matilda.

If it´s before the 9th April, Bridges of Madison County is an absolute must! I would NOT reccommend Mamma Mia if you´re used to the original production. This one is a huge downgrade. I found Neverending Story extremely boring and dull, but it´s the only choice you have if you want to see an original Spanish show. Oh, and do NOT go to Charlie and the Chocolate factory. One of the worst shows I´ve seen. Feel free to shoot me a PM if you want discount tickets for the musicals, or if you need help with anything of your trip. Very happy to help.

A friend of mine saw Bridges in Madrid and, not being a huge fan of Nina, loved the show and said Nina was amazing in the role. I am sorry now I didn't see it at the Menier with Jenna Russell.

I guess there is not accounting for taste :-)
I still recoommend you the non replica Mamma Mia! It's true is not the original version but still worth to watch it, I liked it specially the new coreography Wrt Neverneding Story it's true is not a huge hit but still nice to see.
Bridges on Madison County also reccommeded if you travel before 9th April when it closes.
Definetively you can get rid of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

I would love to see the Neverending Story as the movie was a big part of my childhood.
There had been talk of Stage Entertainment doing a musical version here in Germany, which would probably have sold better than most of their flops. I wonder if this is the same musical or something different.
Why is there no CD, so that people could at least listen to it? Has Spain ever done DVDs of their musicals like France does? I wish I could just hop on a plane to Madrid and see it live, but just not possible at the moment.

Thank you very much everyone. We arrive on the 20th so will miss Bridges, unfortunately. I will definitely steer clear of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. With NeverEnding Story, do you think we would be able to follow it with really woeful understanding of Spanish?

With NeverEnding Story, do you think we would be able to follow it with really woeful understanding of Spanish? I would at least read some good synopsis or better yet, watch the movie. Judging by the pictures online they stayed very close to the movie version including the white fluffball dragon (which author Michael Ende hated with a passion).

With NeverEnding Story, do you think we would be able to follow it with really woeful understanding of Spanish? If you know the story and plot, yes. If not, no way. There´s a lot of dialogue and the plot is a bit dense. That being said, there are some good singing and dance numbers you would still enjoy. So yes, I would watch the movie beforehand.
