Well that's interesting news for a Monday. I think it'll suit the smaller space but I'm not convinced the score is strong enough to make an impression. Will be intrigued to see who we get for Danvers though.

Since it's a show that's very much about "whistling the scenery" I'm really intrigued to see how they plan to do this in such a small space.
But I applaud the Charing Cross Theatre for taking risks with new shows like Allegiance and this next year!
The German fanbois will sell out the small theatre on their own I assume!

For a venue that struggles to quite get 'on the map' it seems crazy to announce this Sept 2023 starter before George Takei's 'Allegiance' has even begun. One of the rules of marketing is keeping a simple message. They've got 3 months of 'Allegiance' to sell!
They might also note that matinees seem to do well at this venue. People will want to travel to see George Takei, or they'll be musical theatre geeks who've heard of 'Rebecca' and find it 'much anticipated'. Taking out the high cost of a necessary hotel, or the risk of late-night train mess ups is a good strategy. I think I'm right that 'Stephen Ward' added further matinees when they realised their audience was mainly older people who remembered the Profumo affair.
I'm quite a regular visitor to this venue, but it seems to learn few lessons and so never quite takes off in the public consciousness. Best thing they could do is beg Paul Taylor Mills to put 'Heathers' in there, or find a star vehicle. If they think they've got that star vehicle with George Takei they've just undermined that.

Interesting! I have no idea if this show will work in the UK but I'm happy we're going to find out. I'm glad they went for a new translation.
Now this is pure speculation on my part, but former West End Elphaba Willemijn Verkaik, who is currently playing Mrs Danvers in the Vienna revival of Rebecca, recently flew to London for a day. I wonder if that had anything to do with this?

an 18 piece orchestra certainly makes me consider going back to the hell hole that is the Charing Cross...
Also saw Willemijn was here and I'd certainly be up for that! Someone like Jo Riding would be good though

Well this is the first house show in a long time (other than the short operas they have done and it seems to be that team behind this show). I note that Thom Southerland isn’t the artistic director anymore per the website so will be interesting to know what this looks like from a production view.

Wow! It's only three months after I finally got to see a production (the current Vienna revival) - with very poorly positioned/sized subtitle screens!!!!!

I think that this is quite exciting - especially with that sized orchestra in that space. Any chance of Sierra Boggess do we think? She was due to do it when originally announced years ago.

The restrictions of the venue are actually very freeing. No longer holed below the financial waterline by expensively rendering Manderley and having it burn down every night in a feast of spectable, they've instead got space for an 18 piece orchestra to sink the show financially instead.

I just really don't think this will be tragic. I reckon Charing Cross is the perfect place for it. Like I said, everyone said the same about The Woman in White, but they did wonderfully with it.
I see people on social media complaining about the English lyrics, but it's stupid to think that the English demo that was recorded literally nearly 20 years ago (2003!!) are the lyrics they will use. It surely would have went through major rewrites when it was due to open on Broadway; the English language version of the title song from Pia Douwes' album probably gives a better idea of the translation that will be used, but even then, it's silly to think that thought wouldn't have went into the translation.

Just WATCH:
I really hope they get it right... I hope it's not a Tanz der Vampire 2.0. I wonder if they'll try for Willemijn Verkaik for Danvers - she's currently playing her on Vienna and is obviously already a name. Ticket sales so far aren't great. Rebecca closes in Vienna just before rehearsals would likely start for London...

I hope they get Willemijn to play Danvers, but I’m not sure how likely that will be.
I saw the production in Vienna and Willemijn sang the role very powerfully. I just question why she would want to complete a long run in a ‘fully-fledged’ production and then move on to a scaled-down production with, presumably, a significantly scaled-down fee?
Crossing my fingers for her (as I have tickets), but not too optimistic it will actually happen.

Picked up a flyer for this while at Allegiance and surprised to see it's already listing run time of 2.15. no mention of interval but presume there is one, the website also shows the 2.15 time.
While I know it's an existing show several members have already said it will need restage for the smaller theatre so surprised they are being so definite about times so early on. Think even the straight staged version of it was longer than 2.15.
Looking forward to seeing it, as however it does play the original book remains a masterpiece of storytelling
