Side note but there's a new musical based on Mayflies being premiered in York in April/May. Written by Gus Gowland, who also wrote Pieces of String which was streamed in lockdown. That's interesting. Music plays a big part in the book, I wonder if they will try to use some of the original tracks in addition to new material. The book draws on memories related to those tracks, which the reader is likely to be able to put in social context, which might be difficult to convey with new material.

At a quick glance the vast majority of programmes especially on BBC2 are repeats. Gone are the days when you sat at home with the Radio Times circling everything you wanted to watch and then lining up your videos ready to record and then programmes overlapping so you had to choose one or the other. And your mum getting up in the middle of the night to check that the video had turned itself off from a late night recording. She always used to think the house would catch fire if the video stayed on overnight. That brings back memories! My mum used to unplug the tv and video every night (in case of fire) or if the house was empty, so we’d no chance of recording anything, not unless you were present. In which case you didn’t actually need to record , you could watch.

Gone are the days where the 'excitment' of purchasing the BBC or ITV telly guide! I swear i see more 'black screen' as i flick between stations than i do the programmes..why why why have channels all synched when adverts play!
1 programme i am looking forward too, a bit of a surprise too, The Detectorists, yes, its akin to LastofSummerWine..well thats a little unfair, faster paced than that. Other than that, likely avoid, even repeats of repeats of repeats ( i can go on a lot more ) of the Morcambe&Wise have lost the touch, along with most 70's shows.

In a change from last years Andre Rieu-fest on Sky Arts, this years Christmas focus seems to be on Elvis. Equally as uninspiring or attractive, personally. I was quite excited when Sky Arts made a move to the freeview airwaves but it's seemingly becoming a VH1 parody over time. ALW's studio shoot of Joseph makes for a few appearances, equally meh.

First two hours of Wolf Hall tonight (2 episodes of 6), from 10.15 on BBC4: Mark Rylance, Damian Lewis, Claire Foy, Jonathan Pryce. Marriages and deaths ensue.
I thought The English with Emily Blunt was keenly structured, now on yer BBC iPlayer (6 x 1 hour episodes) <<< not Christmas, particularly

Claire Foy nailed that ending, that's for sure.

There doesn't seem to be much 'festive' TV though - I'm looking forward to Happy Valley but it doesn't feel 'seasonal. There is a new adaptation of The Dark is Rising made with Complicite for Radio 4 / BBC Sounds. Listening with headphones is recommended because they've done 'binaural sound'.

Let's assume it concludes tomorrow.

Beat that, I hear you say!!
Well, how's about barristerial Martin Sheen adding ham to his cheesy grin in C4s version of the Wagathachristie clusterfudge - part 2 of 2 tonight at 10pm. Colleen takes the stand for a cross-examination, and hits the back of the net.

Beat that, I hear you say!! Would it be wrong for me to suggest Prince Andrew, the Musical (C4 29th December) as the potential highlight of Christmas?

Sibling has arrived with remains of his Disney subscription, so we're going to watch Muppet Christmas Carol and the new Martin McDonagh film which is now on there.

University Challenge tonight had James Graham as part of the team from Hull. An empty chair would have contributed just as much. He couldn't even remember The Grinning Man! Perhaps he was keeping his powder dry for the semis?

Hull were the first team this year to actually have a bit of fun with it and not waste loads of time on questions they obviously didn't know the answer to. Sian Reese Williams was delightful.

This year's M R James Ghost Story adaptation 'Count Magnus' was disappointing.

Two Doors Down was a treat. And The Cleaner was great too. Robbie Curran made a very strong impression That was rather a good hour and a half with The Cleaner, Motherland and 2 Doors Down and I especially liked 2 doors as it kept the cringe worthy comedy but had a lovely happy ending.

Two Doors has matured well. It has transitioned to the post Cathy era very smoothly. It is far more of a balanced ensemble piece now.

I know that Christmas Day night is pretty rubbish and predictable these days but I think the main channels hit an all time low this year. I did enjoy Corrie as it was a nice fun episode but that was it. I ended up watching the whole of series 3 of Emily In Paris on Netflix.

Best festive TV I’ve watched this year: - Ghosts - Motherland - Detectorists - Gone Fishing (especially for Ted the dog) - University Challenge (like it much better to the usual non-festive version)
