Saturday matinee: I liked this a lot. Spoilers ahoy!! >> Ambitious, mature writing by Jasmine Naziha Jones, who produces a great blend of perspectives, absurdism, insights. Also, the balance between father and daughter's emotional realms, through the decades, struck me as strikingly poignant while avoiding sentimentality. Daughter's and their dad's, eh? The only artistic choice which caused me to pause for thought was the double monologue, though I recall Lucy Prebble (once of the RC parish) did something similar in A Very Expensive Poison, and that went down well, particularly with the younger crowd. Impressive again how the Royal Court gets behind a talented, creatively ambitious writer with the right director, designer, cast etc. I came away reflecting on stoicism, dignity and decency, and the blood the madman Blair has on its hands.
The play could have been written specifically for the tune that accompanies the audience as it leaves at the end, or vice versa.
Partial SO at this performance: 4/5
