I bloody knew some smirking twonk would do that, I wish I'd said as much. Whoever invented GIFs, and everyone who likes and uses them, should be made to watch them while strapped into a seat with their eyes clamped open a la Alex in A Clockwork Orange, for hours at a time. And anyone replying to this with any GIFs can sod off.

I only use GIFs sporadically, it's good for a funny reply but using for every post is very annoying.

I’m having unusual feelings about Dianne Abbott....on one hand she’s pretty useless at being an effective politician or public speaker, but her policies and general ‘politic’ seem to be sound. So when some scrote thinks it is acceptable to not only photograph her having a sneaky M&S Mojito on the DLR, but then sells it to the papers I get overwhelming rage and sadness. She has more than likely had an horrific week (what with British politics being a total sh!tshow at the moment) so what is the issue with this poor woman that more than deserves a drink at the end of her working week. Even if it was ‘illegal’ it’s hardly newsworthy. I feel manipulated by hateful newspaper editors and hateful politicians that aren’t acting in our best interests at all and I feel so powerless and impotent, and that my vote & opinion won’t be listened to...and I’ve not really felt like it before. So it’s making me uneasy to say the least.
So it’s not really about Abbott, but just my dissatisfaction with our broken country

She is a very recognisable person so she might have thought twice about drinking anything in public. But I agree this kind of picking on people is silly..

I mean firstly what I've learned from Diane Abbot is that there's any kind of rule about drinking on the tube...frankly every time I'm on it late at night it seems almost mandatory...
But yes this is rather a microcosm of the witch hunt mentality of the press. That said the good natured supportive social media response is heartwarming.

I just hope that more and more people start to feel wholly unrepresented and choose to do something about it, be that a new party, s(p)oiling your paper or abstaining from voting at all. Maybe Guy Fawkes had the right idea after all.

Having just read the "this week I am going to" thread, I suspect my dislike of all the Marvel comics films and comic book films generally is an unpopular opinion...
The only ones I've ever enjoyed are some of the more recent X Men ones, and I suspect that is mainly because of the cast!

They're popular and successful films but I reckon if they were sufficiently bothered there'd be enough folk here happy to declare themselves as un-Avengery types to even things out. I'm less about the films and more about the TV series.

dislike of all the Marvel comics films I can't stand them! I love indie comics and British / European comics and BD but even a a kid Marvel left me cold. DC comics were slightly more interesting (darker, more human). I tried watching Doctor Strange last week for Cumberbatch and the psychedelics but it's such hokum and I gave up. I've heard good things about Spiderverse though, and will give it a shot, and the Joaquin Phoenix Joker film could be a must-see. There's a rather overlooked film called Mystery Men that's a little gem - worth catching if you get the chance.

Any and all Fringes are an excuse to stage total self-important tripe.
Those that make it out to the West End or further life are either the 1% or have some dirt on someone, I'm convinced.
The atmosphere is that of carefully curated "creativity," where everyone is so individual they look the same. Ohhh you're juggling in the street! Oooooh you're handing out flyers in silence wearing white face paint! Oooh you're flirting with me in character as a steampunk professor, how AVANT GARDE.
In short, I hate the Fringes.

The whole thing about Shakespeare being born and dying on the same day - do we have actual proper evidence of that?
Or am I the only one who suspects that someone got their dates muddled up at some point, and it was actually either one or t’other, but it got written down as both and was thereafter accepted as Fact?

Come off it kathryn we all know Shakespeare was make believe and didn't really exist or if he did didn't write anything so it's all irrelevant Statistically how likely is it?

I believe that we know for a fact he died on 23rd April but no one knows exactly when he was born. There's a baptism record somewhere that doesn't DISprove the theory that he *might* have been born on 23rd April, so in lieu of actual evidence, and because it ties in nicely with both his death date and St George's Day, we've just all adopted 23rd April as his official birthday because why not.

You have put something into words that I've never quite been able to! I've always found Fringe events made me feel a bit inferior because they're so applauded and supposedly hubs of all talent but I'd look at the programmes for Brighton Fringe and never find anything I was interested in and I decided it was probably just because I'm uncultured but I don't think that's true, I'm just not a hipster.

I've been going to the Edinburgh Fringe for 12 years and it never occurred to me in all that time that I, who revel in being as unhip as possible, am in fact a hipster. This is devastating.

Yes, I was in Stratford-on-Avon a few weeks back and as they explained it there, the baptism record doesn’t disprove the potential birth date as children were baptised quite soon after birth back then, for obvious reasons. So you could probably pinpoint the birth date within a week or two previous. And I guess since we know he died after a big night out with the boys to celebrate his birthday, and since we know when his death date was, we can assume from that when he himself considered his birthday to be.

When I went to see Taming of the Shrew at the Rose theatre, an American woman was incandescent at all the references to Shakespeare when everyone knew he didn't write any of the plays. I imagine she only bought a ticket so she could berate the audience around her.

I fear getting a heavy object thrown at my head by @ryan but Bernadette Peters is the best Mamma Rose of all time for me, of the Broadway and West End at least. I've seen bootlegs of her, Tyne and Patti. I saw Imelda live three times and I have heard and watched Angela, Linda and Ethel and honestly, the acting, the singing, the vunerability, the mentality, I just think her performance was nothing short of astonishing and how she lost the Tony is a disgrace.
That said, I know most consider her the worst or one of the worst, so maybe it really is just me. 😂
