They might suck individually but there's nothing wrong with remakes or reboots in principle. As theatre fans, constantly chasing the next Hamlet or comparing and contrasting our favourite Elphabas, you'd think we'd be more into the idea of seeing new actors take on established roles and stories than non-theatre fans, but for some reason a lot of us are unable to look at a remake in the same way we'd greet a revival, even though the original film or TV series will always be accessible to us.

Most of the people who slag off reboots or remake tend not to be the demographics that it's aimed for, Thunderbirds are Go which is a worthy successor to the original Thunderbirds was criticised because it wasn't going to be using puppets, now I like the original Thunderbirds but it's over 50 years old and a lot of the content is simply not suitable for today's kids not to mention CGI no matter how people slag it off, have meant the characters and vehicles can do a lot more. I hate when people say 'Why don't just show the original?' as well when someone announces a remake or reboot.

there's nothing wrong with remakes or reboots in principle. I think for me the issue is that they see to be taking precedence over new, original material at the moment, the mainstream film and tv makers and book publishers commissioning them as safe bets rather than developing new material from living writers and creatives. And yet when something does come from leftfield, it proves popular - look at word-of-mouth successes from new writers like This County, low budget and tucked away on bbc3, and the indie film God's Own Country.

Picking up a theme from another thread - papering companies either shouldn't exist or should openly and prominently advertise their services to everyone. There are few things more annoying than someone bragging about getting a free ticket to something you paid good money for! Same goes for people bragging about how much discount they got on tickets when sitting in the theatre - I hunt for discounts a lot but don't then sit there chatting at the top of my voice about how I got a £75 ticket for 20 quid! I'm really not a fan of the concept of papering full stop - it gives a completely false impression of the audience a show has! I think the papering discussion is an interesting one really. Just one question if I may, if papering companies continue to operate as they do (and for clarity I believe they should myself) if you were offered a papered ticket would you accept it? Or would you reject it and pay full price on principle?

Madonna is possibly the worst singer ever to grace the charts.
That said, she puts on a damn good show that helps you forget the fact she is actually terrible.

If membership of the service was more widely publicised and thus available to more people, then I wouldn't object so much. The sense of superiority and boasting that comes across from some people who get comps is what really infuriates me. In that sense, if the membership was wider and it wasn't the same people getting freebies time and time again (it's fairly obvious that some people on this board frequently get to go to shows for free who aren't there to review), then I admit I would be less begrudging and I would be willing to set aside my dislike of how it distorts the popularity of a show - after all, if a show isn't making money it will become obvious eventually. It's all the insider comments of "such and such show is papering heavily" that grate. If I was offered a free ticket from a papering company now then yes, I probably would take it, because I have bills to pay like everyone else and a bit of cash saved is always welcome. But I'm afraid I'd find it very difficult to stick to the cult of secrecy about where I'd got the ticket from, though I wouldn't be boasting about it in the theatre or on here.

Madonna is possibly the worst singer ever to grace the charts. That said, she puts on a damn good show that helps you forget the fact she is actually terrible. See, I’m the opposite on that. Vocally yes she’s below average (now she is but once upon a time she was perfectly fine). Madonna’s back catalogue of songs is astounding in quality and she’s undoubtedly one of the greatest recording stars for a couple of generations of people. Just think she was only 7-8 years into her career when The Immaculate Collection was released and she even had to leave out #1 hits to fill the CD. Her shows on the other hand are horrendous and from my eye she has zero stage presence. To follow on from that, Beyonce is a fantastic live performer, but I would be hesitant to ever call her a living legend because she has barely any memorable hit songs. She’s been around for 20 years including Destiny’s Child and I can’t think of a single song so far that could possibly become some kind of future standard that new generations will be covering and playing for years to come.

If you liked it then you should have put a ring on it. There are no words to describe this magnificence. Who needs any other cover versions when no-one will get anywhere close to this work of genius?

Alfie Boe needs to stop singing...permanently.
I just suffered through his attempt at doing swing on the Queen's birthday concert and had to hit mute halfway through. It was dreadful.

Almost makes me want to dig out that film again, then Cynthia Nixon brings me crashing down to earth again at the end and reminds me how heinous that film is.

Oh Christ is he back again? Someone also needs to start a 'Set Michael Ball free' campaign...I quite like the chubby cheeked Balls, but I've gone right off him since he's been joined at the hip with the Boe.

"Kids Eat Free!"
No They Don't.
The prices are just hiked up for the rest of us to pay.
If I see "Kids Eat Free", I Keep Away, as the only thing that's likely to be "free" is the "entertainment" courtesy of the "kids" in the restaurant...

Yes, my heart sunk when on a cruise lately when it was announced there were 540 kids on board. When waiting for a performance in one of the lounges on a couple of nights a member of the staff had to make announcements every 5 minutes for the kids to get off the stage. The little darlings were being ignored by their parents. Related to this P and O whose ship it was run nurseries up to 2am! That is parents abdicating responsibility in my opinion.

But I'm afraid I'd find it very difficult to stick to the cult of secrecy about where I'd got the ticket from, though I wouldn't be boasting about it in the theatre or on here. But… What papering companies do, has to be ‘secret’? Producers wouldn’t go near them if they advertised how cheap some seats go for. It’s upto producers to decide whether to engage them and I believe even subsidised theatre's have done this on occasions. Producers do it mainly because those who pay to go to the theatre, enjoy it more if the place isn’t half empty. Arguably actors perform better when there are enough in the audience to give them something back. And it can help a show survive with good word of mouth during a lull or until a new cast arrives. Really its just another marketing tool. I have heard of occasions where its to ensure a full house when they know a VIP will be attending. If someone who gets a papered ticket is overhead announcing it out loud in the Theatre, then they will have been told that they can expect to lose their membership. They really are spoilers. To declare my interest I have received the odd ticket for next to nothing, via such a company. I am also sure I’ve paid top whack sitting close to someone who’s been papered. But I don’t know at which shows and I doubt its been often. One final point. I dont think these qualify as a "secretive club" not open to all. They would love to advertise and gain new members, but that would defeat the object. I'm sure with a little use of Google you 'll find out who the players are.

Luke Evans was by far the best (not much competition though). Agreed. And Kylie natch. And I thought Helen George looked absolutely lovely, the vocals were a bit so-so but she looked delightful. Oh and I rather liked the George Formby tribute too. In fact, I think that was my favourite bit of the show apart from Her Maj obviously.
