When someone dies peacefully in their sleep, at the age of 98, having lived a long and fulfilling life and working in their chosen profession to a grand old age giving joy and entertainment to so many people, you cannot call it a tragedy. But it is still a sad loss.
Shame he was a Spurs supporter. RIP.

His autobiography is intereson being a child actor before the war. IIRC he was in the girst production of Dear Octopus with Gielgud

I saw him play Gayev in The Cherry Orchard in 1983. He was great - best I've seen in the role. Later he notably played Falstaff for the RSC in Merry Wives - I didn't see that but probably a few posters here did.

I saw him in "Love For Love" in Chichester. It was great to see a legend on the stage.
