They've opened the circle in OLS for the Surprise Film this year so still plenty of tickets left... I'm seeing Battle of the Sexes at the same time at the Curzon Mayfair so I can't make it anyway. I imagine some will sneer at it for being a crowd pleaser but it's so well-directed and well-acted, it's probably the film I most 'enjoyed' so far. I was on Cloud Nine at the end of it! You'll have a great time Jon.

I guess it might be something to do with the fact that she has a couple of Oscars in the bathroom. And she's most probably an equal to Hopkins as well. In the movies at the very least, if not on stage. My guess is the star billing is purely for the USA market. People like Ecclestone, Scott and Carter are bigger draws than her on UK TV I'd say. Broadbent has an Oscar too of course. Dr Jan can I have some of what you're smoking if you think Jim Carter is a bigger name than Emma Thompson!!

Also forgot to share I got an email saying that 16-25s can now get £5 tickets IN ADVANCE for certain high-profile events including The Florida Project red carpet on Friday and the Annette Bening Screen Talk on Thursday afternoon.

Having a great time this festival. Making the most of trying to attend films with Q&A sessions, often makes the whole feel of a festival much richer. Gladly gave Ambassador Samantha Power a standing ov after seeing The Final Year on Sunday, and would have done the same for Billie Jean King for Battle of the Sexes had she returned following the end of the film.
Really enjoyed Last Flag Flying yesterday and looking forward to The Shape of Water and The Florida Project that are still to come.
At least with the Weinstein scandal my fear that the Surprise Film would be The Current War has been quashed. Still hoping for Lady Bird, but will likely be The Disaster Artist I feel, which I'm fine with too. I think if it was going to be Lady Bird, On Chesil Beach would've been scheduled to play closer to the Surprise Film so Saoirse Ronan could attend the Q&A. Still, if she's still in town you never know...

Thanks Kathryn and David - think I'm going to go for it. The second film has directors and guests so hopefully Claire Stewart will give it a lengthy intro to work in my favour!

A bit of advice to ask - I'm seeing a film at Curzon Mayfair at 12:45 that lasts 97 mins but I'm hoping to see a film at Odeon Leicester Square at 14:30. Should I give up hope of getting to LS in time or leave early and make a dash for it? 97 minutes won't be including credits so I think you could leave once the credits appear but I don't know how far it is from Mayfair to OLS? 20 min walk or 8 minute drive along Picadilly apparently, though will be tight either way.

@n1david if you're looking for a chuckle, then Brigsby Bear tickled me the other day if there are any more showings.
For myself, had a blast at The Meyerowitz Stories and Battle of the Sexes - both have top-rate casts at the top of their game with very experienced directors. Would definitely recommend people seek them out, though I don't think they'll be hard to find.
Wonderstruck was an odd beast but surprisingly not too twee and genuinely sweet and magical. Very original, and a film about children but for adults. And Cate Blanchett was just radiant at her Q&A, though she didn't reveal anything about All About Eve.

Also I've noticed that quite a few tickets for previously sold out screenings or events have been made available on the BFI website today, including the Cate Blanchett Q&A tonight. Perhaps keep an eye on the website if there's anything you want to see and have easy access to London.

Also caught this this week. I was a huge lover of Andrews' Streetcar and although this isn't as heady as that production, I really enjoyed the play and all of the performances.
The aesthetic was very startling and thought the stage was used very well. In fact, along with the amazing costumes (Big Mama's dress was just so *her*), the play really did look amazing. Usually if you start a review complimenting the appearance of a production, the rest is downhill but actually, in the case, I thought everything was pulled off very well.
I did think Sienna's accent was somewhat shrill, but you have to hand it to her for being brave enough to 'give it her all' night after night. The performance itself was great, so too was the rest of the cast. I really felt Brick's struggle. Colm Meany was excellent too.
Glad to see this selling so well, hopefully it will have attracted some infrequent theatregoers over its run and that's always a good thing. Can't wait to see what Andrews does next.

A heads up that there is a Cineworld Unlimited Screening of The Death of Stalin on October 12th. So think it's very unlikely LFF would have it as their Surprise Film two days later with the possibility a lot of the audience will already have seen it.

Any more guesses for Surprise Film? If it's Darkest Hour, I can't for the life of me think why they wouldn't do it as a gala with a massive fanfare. Joe Wright, Gary Oldman and KST all on the red carpet for a huge Leicester Square event is textbook LFF. It doesn't make sense for them to do it as the Surprise Film if they managed to get it.
So I hope it's Lady Bird.

Thanks for the heads up - though is it worth it to take those last few rows of the circle seats or wait in the hope that some cheap seats in the first four rows come up instead? I remember there was a lot of availability across the whole house for Angels usually on the day of performance.

Is that a new press photo of Tina that Baz tweeted? I thought she had semi-retired following her last tour. Rarely been seen/interviewed. Wonder if she'll do a bit of press or performing for this new musical.
How much was Carole King involved in Beautiful?

Have to say I was disappointed the Blanchett talk was already sold out. Got what I wanted though (surprise film & Battle of the Sexes gala), but will wait until general release day as I can't buy concession prices on Amex presale.
Still tickets for the Embankment screening of Three Billboards.

Snooping around on twitter and see that a few screenings have already sold out. How much of an allocation do AMEX holders have held back for them? And how do we even book - just go to BFI website? I tried entering promo code 'amex' but keep getting error response.

Yes it's a famously difficult part so as long as Barrowman gets his teeth into Dick I don't think the audience will be disappointed.

And just to contribute to the other discussion going on, I think millennials get a bad rap. What did the Gen X people go through in their childhoods to make them more mature?
The 'things weren't like this in my day' argument has been repeated again and again but I agree that there is something different with the millennials. I read a great article in Vanity Fair about this if anyone wants to seek it out.

Well, although I would've started going earlier if I had the access from my town oop norf, I'm 20 now and started going when I moved to London for uni a couple of years ago.
9 times out of 10 I'm often the youngest in the theatre. Which is fine. I'm always responsible in finding my seat, getting the tube, not being disruptive etc. I've never felt discriminated against or looked down upon in a theatre because I'm young. I just wish more people my age would start going regularly - though I suppose that's easier said than done with ticket prices.
Anyway - for the OP they won't be the first pair of 14-year-olds that have gone to see Wicked, LM I'm more uncertain.

I always get annoyed when a film I really want to see (like this year) is the Closing gala! No repeat screening the following day for a fraction of the price! Couldn't have cared less about Free Fire last year.
