Saw it on Saturday and loved it. Hadn’t appreciated that John Light had missed performances but I did wonder why his character was using a crutch.

Yes, we loved it too. Phoebe Fox is captivating and I’m not sure I took a breath in the final 30 minutes.

Thanks! They did agree to a straight swap for Friday night after a bit of discussion.

I just booked for this. Thought I had tickets for Friday in my basket but after checkout they turned out to be for Thursday - ie tomorrow. Never done anything this daft before - how are the National about exchanging tickets after a genuine mistake?

Saw this on Saturday and loved it. Marvellous set and a very impressive cast kept the audience rapt throughout. Bath audiences can be a little oddball on occasion but thankfully there were no impromptu standing ovations when David Suchet appeared on stage. Hugely relevant themes kept the play vibrant and there were no catastrophic American accents, unlike some in the recent production of Pressure.

The Mario thing is far more pronounced in photos that have been oversaturated to emphasize the resemblance. Honestly, it is barely going to register with you let alone distract you. It certainly isn’t mugged up, it just plays to the strengths of the Globe setup, ie the proximity of the groundlings.

He carries a big plumber style bag in one scene so it’s possibly not accidental

The forecast for the matinee I’m attending is 30 degrees. I’m slightly concerned about dying. Are there restrictions on bringing water into the venue? I can’t remember

What's the situation with swearing in this please? Think my dad would like but he's funny about bad language. Ta I really can’t recall any excessive use of ‘bad’ language but there may conceivably have been a little effing and jeffing from the yanks in the heat of the moment. I certainly wouldn’t let it cause you to miss what I found to be a very enjoyable and surprisingly tense play.

It was a real curate’s egg. Impressive staging at the National and the cast was largely solid but, oh my, the text was borderline embarrassing.

Thanks for the info Hmmm. Seats seem good, and £12.50 is an absolute bargain. On the other hand, in all honesty a main draw for me would be a chance to see a master like Jeremy Irons on stage, and the reviews from Bristol seem to suggest that he wasn't on form and forgetting lines (and, oddly, said that he would only transfer to National or to New York) so perhaps it might be a disappointment. I saw this in Bristol and there was no forgetting of lines on that night. It was an excellent production although, as good as Irons was, I thought Lesley Manville was the star of the show.

Lesley Manville was fantastic in it, Jeremy Irons less so, so would prefer someone else taking over. Not sure that I would go so far as to say I would prefer someone else to JI but, certainly, Lesley Manville was outstanding.

Yes, it was pretty mediocre with Vanessa Redgrave so I'm not sure the cast of Playaway is going to entice me in again.

Oooh, fabulous! I'm going tomorrow because I love Katy Wix. Now, I've read these marvellous reviews, I shall be calling ahead to ensure the bar is fully stocked with gin. Katy Wix channels Hattie Jacques masterfully in this. I thought it was great fun. It's not cerebral but that's no bad thing.

I sense that martin1965 has enjoyed a late liquid lunch today. Not at all, just enjoyed a good afternoon out, lots of laughs. Hope it does well in the WE. Indeed. We saw it this evening and had a great time. Thankfully amusement and fun are not yet illegal, merely frowned upon.

Enjoyed this last night although Benny Hill died the night after Frankie Howard, not the other way round. I know this doesn't matter but curious as to why they didn't just comment on Frankie's death first {Spoiler - click to view} This is incorrect. Benny Hill was quoted in the press paying tribute to Frankie Howard but, in fact and unbeknownst at the time, was already dead himself. Frankie Howerd's death was announced first (so the play is wrong on that score) but Benny actually did die first.

Everyone is taking it far too seriously. Pinter never dealt in actual plot in his plays, he simply developed situations. This one is (to me) about clinging to life via the creative uses of memory. And it has the bonus of being very funny. Indeed, to quote my friend who stayed for a post show talk "Turned out it was far less complicated than I was making it" Indeed. The post show comments from McKellen were that it was a play about two strangers getting pissed and that's as complicated as it gets.

I did enjoy this but then I'd happily watch Mark Rylance do pretty much anything. It was certainly knowing in its presentation of a piece that lacked any real sense of narrative progression or even thematic coherence - but I'd suggest that it needed to be more insightful or significantly funnier to fully justify its existence. A mildly amusing meander through some cod-philosophy is not enough but bonus points for including some unexpected Iron Maiden. I did enjoy Farinelli, and this wasn't awful, but I'd quite like to see Mark Rylance commit himself to a role with a little more heft next time he's in London.

I saw this yesterday and enjoyed it immensely - the juxtaposition of despair and belly laughs was perfectly judged. I didn’t really know what to expect going in but wasn’t expecting the farce to have quite such a dark, emotional core. I found Katherine Parkinson’s performance to be absolutely heartbreaking in places – this is certainly much more than a cosy carry-on infused nostalgia trip.

Just had an email from the Old Vic confirming the running time for this - 3 hours 30 minutes so the start has been shifted back to 7pm for evening perfs and 1pm for matinees..... Disappointing news. Can't make 1pm on the day I'm in London so have had to cancel my booking.
