Reading about this outdoor theatre they've built it seems the RSC think no-one will want to go back into an indoor theatre until October. Every other theatre I follow thinks it will be in May. Let's see who is right. Offering tickets for people to watch on-line rehearsals of Henry VI is an interesting approach to trying to recoup the millions of pounds they have to pay back on their Covid loan. On the whole the NT's idea of staging a musical every year looks a bit more likely to succeed. Still, it gets Henry VI crossed off the list so they can proceed with the full cycle of plays, I assume they're not going to actually stage the play properly now ? Tweet the RSC sent me when I asked about the staging of the Henry VI plays and Richard III going forward: "Our plan is to still stage Henry VI Part II, III & Richard III. We’re working on future plans for this & will share more info in the coming months - these plans have had to evolve from those we had back in early 2020. This will be the only opportunity to see Henry VI Part One."

More details to follow, but this sounds exciting. On or around the 29th October 2021, Beyond Shakespeare and friends are going to stage part of the Lord Mayor's Show from 1621 on Cheapside, recreating some of the excitement of these performances as were in the 17th century. The text was by Thomas Middleton. I've been fortunate enough to take part in editing and recording some of these for the Beyond Shakespeare and they are a fascinating insight into the past. More to be found on the link below: www.youtube.com/channel/UCLa4pXxGZFwTX4QSaB5XNdQ I will update once more is known and times and dates.

Did the RSC get any money from government in recent handouts? They've stayed quiet about it?

According to Greg Doran article on WOS, this was due to follow Sunday in the Park into the Savoy later this year. Plan is to get Matilda back first by sounds of things

I really enjoyed it, don't remember it being overly modernised. Do remember Marston's death being fairly spectacular and them keeping the original ending rather than the messy two survivors too many versions leave

So far has been King Lear and Coriolanus.
King Lear was fairly run of the mill traditional dress production. No stand outs but solid show.
Only caught first 30 mins of Coriolanus (directed by Robert Lepage) but wow what a show. Slick, filmlike and cleverly edited and staged.
10 more productions to come including Pericles

Just a plug for Robert Crichton's YouTube channel, Beyond Shakespeare.
Over the last few weeks I've been lucky enough to take part in readings of some Early Modern and Elizabethan plays, all of which are available on YouTube.
It is free to take part and you do not need to be an actor to do so.
Plays include:
Tamburlaine Parts One and Two Massacre at Paris Everyman Mankind Famous Victories of Henry V A Game at Chess
Next week will hopefully be Heywood's Edward IV Parts 1 and 2

I remember seeing the NT Frankenstein on the very first preview performance, bonus on my birthday, and I still can't get it out of my head even now. Really looking forward to seeing both variations again.

In which case, my top 10. Ordered by artform rather than overall preference, as it's too difficult to compare the artforms. The dates are when I saw them, not when the production originated (the RB's R&J is the original from the 1960s, for instance). I have reluctantly decided that Kiss Me Kate & Lend Me A Tenor do not include enough Shakespearean scenes to qualify! Plays The Comedy of Errors Globe tour 2009 Much Ado About Nothing Globe 2011 The Merchant of Venice Globe 2015 Love's Labour's Lost RSC 2017 (West End transfer) Much Ado About Nothing RSC 2017 (West End transfer) Ballet Romeo & Juliet RB 2019 Opera Sir John In Love ENO 2006 Otello WNO 2008 Beatrice et Benedict WNO 2012 (the opera itself isn't nearly as good as Much Ado but the production was gorgeous) Musical A Winter's Tale Landor 2012Oh I had forgotten about Sir John in Love, that will have to be number 11

I wonder if there is a single play that has slipped through the net. anyone mentioned king John? or Henry VIII? The Howard Davies RSC Henry VIII would have been in my next group of 10. Richard Griffiths and John Thaw. I saw it at the RST on a virtually bare stage - very Brechtian, focussing only on the politics of the play. Later I saw the same production again at the Barbican but this time it had a set - turned out the stagehands had been on strike the first time I saw it, but it was more in keeping with the concept without one. I think Lynette liked the one done in the Stratford church during the RSC complete works season. The Doran one in the Swan was praised but for me there was too much empty processional stuff. I remember the Swan one for Jane Lapotaire as Katherine and Cherry Morris in the Old Lady/Anne Boleyn scene. The shows range from about age 12 to mid 30s age wise
