I can't say why it is.... but... I don't much care for Sweeney, Phew, I've been working upto saying this here for some time and that's a real weight off me. Is not liking Sweeney Todd considered a controversial opinon? Personally I think it is an utterly vile piece in terms of plot and I would never go and see it. There are some good songs but I will only ever hear them in concert.

Regents Opera are buildng thier Ring. I was very impressed with Rheingold last year and will sign up for the full Cycle when its avaible. The orchestration is just enough and works in the smaller space for an authentic experience. Prices 'realistic'. I'm afraid the reviews & production pictures I saw of it last year didn't make me want to see it. really do want to see a traditional horned helmets and armour ring cycle version Yes, that's what I want. Sadly I don't think I'm ever going to get it.

I think a concert presentation helps with that as you can trim the dialogue/replace with narration to suit the form I would definitely want the dialogue, not narration.

Instead of these recent concerts of shows that are still very much part of the current repertoire, I would love a return of the Lost Musicals events. I'd be interested in that. I only found out about the original concerts near the end of their life so I only saw a couple but I enjoyed those I did see. However if more were done I'd want them to be the originals, not totally rewritten for "modern sensibilities".

I guess I'll be accessing Twitter via the website then, like I do on my laptop, and ignoring the annoying "Twitter is better on the app" messages. I am not going to be forced into getting rid of an otherwise perfectly fine phone!

TBF 7 years with the same phone is a bit longer than the average support cycle for apps and phone updates which is 3-5 years. But why should the support cycle only be 3-5 years? If there is nothing wrong with a phone, and I have had no problems with mine apart from the recent Twitter one, then it should still be supported. Given the resources, especially minerals, needed to manufacture mobile phones people should be able to use them for as long as possible.

How depressing. I certainly can't afford to buy a new phone at the moment, quite apart from not wanting to do so on general principal while mine still works. I am on only my second ever smartphone & I only bought the second one, at the end of 2016, when the first one, from 2011, died suddenly & unrepairably. Given we are supposed to be trying to be a less throw-away society to save the planet, I find it disgusting when companies try to to force people into buying new products.

I noticed yesterday afternoon that the no phones signs the ushers were holding up beforehand & in the interval had a line in smaller print that said something like "If you snap our cast they will snap at you" so evidently Charlie Stemp is living up to the threat!

Can we try leasing the railways on strike days for a giant mainline production of Starlight?... Now that I would go to! Well, except that with a train strike I wouldn't be able to get to it...

Has the app name changed to X-something? When I searched it came up showing the new X logo, it just wouldn't let me download it.

If The Nose had had an interval I would have left in it! Since then I've avoided Kosky. I didn't see the last Ring either. In fact I've never seen a live Ring & doubt I will unless I can find a time machine!

Further to the comments upthread, does it count as immersive if your seat kept shaking during I Got Rhythem? I was sat front row so I assume that doesn't happen when sat further from the stage.
I enjoyed the production but I didn't love it as I did the Regent's Park production. Charlie Stemp is certainly the stand out. It's a pity he wasn't born a few decades earlier, when there were far more shows around suited to his talents.
I remember the Fodors being somewhat annoying but not nearly as annoying as in this production, where I found them almost unbearable. They also seem to have changed from being siblings to a married couple.

When I saw the prices I was very thankful that the presence of Kosky had stopped me wanting to see it even before seeing them!
Don Q is at least cheaper than some of the other "tutu" ballets such as Sleeping Beauty & Cinderella last season.

The Twitter app on my phone (Samsung Galaxy), having been playing up for a couple of months, today decided to refuse to send any tweets full stop. I decided to uninstall & reinstall it, which I've done with apps before when they've played up. However having uninstalled it the Google Play app store is informing me I cannot redownload it. Has anyone else had this problem?

People drink at similar events, as long as they aren't disruptive I don't understand the pearl clutching about doing it at the theatre. Personally I really dislike the smell of beer and red wine so it's not much fun for me at a performance if I'm stuck next to someone whose drink is giving off an odour which is making me feel somewhat nauseous.

david That sounds almost the same as the concert I saw last June, except that was the CBSO rather than the Halle and Gina Beck rather than Lucy May Barker. I guess the performances last year, in Birmingham & Saffron Walden (I was at the latter), were popular enough that they decided to bring it to further venues. For me the South Pacific section was a preview, as I didn't see the Chichester production until it was at Sadler's Wells a couple of months later.

sell hot dogs at the interval That would have reduced their ticket sales by one, as I wouldn't have booked for next week if they were selling hot dogs in the auditorium. I don't want to sit through a show with the smell of fast food, which I find unpleasant, in the air. And no, I'm not over 65, I'm 38.

I only seem to get tweets from past years when I click that. I'm on twitter so don't know if that's why. Sorry it's not working. I've done a screenshot for those who it's not showing up for.

Having a look at the ATG website, it's showing every Monday bar one during the November-February extension as already sold out. If that's true, and not that they're holding back tickets for some reason, then that means anyone who wants to see the show during that period who hasn't been able to already book - 4+ months in advance - is going to have to pay a minimum of £49.50. That counts me out for one. I had been going to try to find out if a couple of the understudies had any dates scheduled later in the run but I guess there's no point asking now that I won't be able to afford a ticket anyway.
ETA Sorry alece10, my comment is a cross post & isn't meant to be a reply to yours.

Their choice, but never understood actors who follow this. Why deny yourself some great roles? Even Elaine Paige knew what an opportunity Norma Desmond was, and it finally took her to Broadway. Evidently someone has shown this discussion to Emma Williams, or she reads the site herself, because she's replied on Twitter (click on the tweet because her reply includes 2 subsequent tweets).

Why is it whenever someone's phone goes off during a performance it's always at the worst possible time? I only enjoyed about half the pieces performed in Carlos [Acosta] At 50 last night so of course it happened during one of the ones I enjoyed, the Swan Lake Act II pas de deux, rather than any of the modern pieces I disliked!

Having gorgeous pictures of Charlie all over the tube would certainly get me into the theatre. Perhaps having them perform more on television (not that that is an easy thing to do) could help as well. People, in this day and age, want to know what they are getting before spending a lot of money on theatre tickets. I also think they should market more to the LGBT+ community on this one. This is going to be a dumb thing to ask but why? It's a musical with Gershwin songs, it's not exactly La Cage Aux Folles or Kinky Boots. I'm wondering why too. I've not seen this production yet but I don't recall anything gay-orientated in the Regent's Park production (unless you count Samuel Holmes, who played pretty much the same camp character in CFY as he has in the half a dozen other shows I've seen him in since!). Has this Chichester production had a re-write to make some of the characters gay or something?

Well you should like it MORE. It’s in another league to that awful Regent’s Park version- which basically ripped off the Stroman choreography. As I really enjoyed the Regent's Park production & that was the first production I saw I'm not expecting to like this one as much because usually when I love the first production I see of a show & see it multiple times then it's the definitive one in my mind & no matter how good any subsequent productions I see are they can't replace that first one as definitive for me.

Despite previous comments on here that the lottery seats offered on Fridays for the following week are better than those offered on Mondays for 4 weeks ahead, when the lottery email arrived a few minutes ago I thought I'd have a look for 2nd August. Several front row seats were available so, as an inveterate front-rower whenever ticket prices allow it, I immediately snapped one up. If anyone tells me front row doesn't allow feet to be seen then I'm not bothered. I saw the Regent's Park transfer 8 times at the Novello from the front row & only being able to see the dancers from the knees up in no way impeded my enjoyment of that production. I only hope I like this production even half as much as that one (I very much doubt I will like it as much).

I went for the equalish numbers of both option but the option I actually need would read "I see ballet, opera, musicals, plays (mostly Mischief) and a bit of improv".

I’ve seen Don John booed at the end of Much Ado About Nothing, I doubt the actor took it as a criticism of his performance - it’s not Opera after all. I've seen a Pinkerton get pantomime booed so it does occasionally happen at the opera too. The tenor looked rather upset by it. He wasn't British so may not have understood that it was aimed at his character rather than his performance. Hence why I think pantomime booing certainly has no place at the opera, though I dislike it at plays & musicals too (I never go to pantomimes).

I've just signed up for the lottery & the confirmation email says you get re-entered automatically 4 times before having to re-sign up. Has anyone worked out if, given their are 2 draws per week, that's 4 draws or 4 weeks you are automatically re-entered for? I don't actually want to go until 2nd August, as that's the next time I have a free matinee slot on a day CFY has a matinee. so would want the lottery on 28th July. That is 2 and a half weeks and 5 draws away, if I've calculated correctly, hence knowing if I'll need to re-enter or if it'll be covered by my entry today would be useful. Worried I have signed up too soon & will get offered tickets for when I don't want to go, then won't be able to get a ticket for when I actually do want to go.

Yes. I found it tedious both the production and musically. I LOVE Cosi but the others leave me cold and bored. Mozart was not a good dramatist, in my book I seem to remember rather enjoying it, though I from what I recall there was only one really good aria in it. I like most of Mozart's major operas, if done in decent productions with casts who can act as well as sing, and Nozze is among my favourite half a dozen operas.

Thanks FrontroverPaul. It sounds pleasant rather than unmissable. A full orchestra and a large choir - with performances by the men, the women or all depending on the song - plus four excellent soloists who I think were from the choirs. Two of the four soloists listed on Cadogan Hall's website, Hannah Pedley & Toby Stafford-Allen, are opera singers who I've seen in the past. Therefore I would have thought all the soloists were professional soloists rather than choir members.
