This is sad! Has anyone seen any audience members leaving when you went?

ooooh the dailymail attacked the Old Vic, thank god I was sitting down when I read the news. And what happened next? The theatre faced fiery protests and walked back on their decision or...?

The Old Vic's toilets have been gender-neutral for a couple of years and the world has not ended. Why should there be a media frenzy over something that has become increasingly common in the past few years?
Besides, Cabaret's toilets are gender-neutral only before the show starts, at the interval all the men go to the urinals to skip the super long queue of women.

Well, I liked it but I didn't love it {Spoiler - click to view} There is an awful lot to enjoy and the cast is pretty strong. I think the show was let down a little by the direction: when the book is so episodic you need a strong vision to hold it together, and I think it was often missing. It's definitely a slow burner and it takes a little while to find its footing. I thought it really started to work in the scene that precedes "Perfectly Marvellous", while Willkommen and Sally's first two songs were thrown away. After that it works much better and the crescendo toward the end of act 1 was thrilling.
Act 2, on the whole, is in much better shape, but I found the title song completely cringeworthy. It's not really Jessie Buckley's fault, it's just overwrought and overdirected. It reminded me of Imelda's Rose's Turn toward the end of the run of Gypsy but ten times stronger in the worst of all possible ways. If there is a song that really needs the singer to stand and sing it, that's Cabaret. There are much more subtler ways to convey a breakdown than the three-act one-woman opera currently going on during the title number. Honestly, in the past three months I've seen so much stuff that was just too over-directed, and I don't know if it's because directors don't trust the material or simply think that the audience is a bunch of morons. "Cabaret" is a perfect showtune with a clearly delineated structure and evolution, you really do not need all that ACTING™️ to get the message through. Part of the problem is the staging in the round, that always forces actors to turn around every two seconds in the most unrealistic way. But seriously, just trust the material and tone it down a little. It has worked wonderfully for 55 years, just allow it to work its magic.
Also, I think Eddie Redmayne was very good but also somehow underused? As in, in every scene he hides behind a different elaborate costume and make-up, in this production the role of the Emcee doesn't need to rely on the performer's charisma as much as in other versions of the show (most notably Mendes'). That's a pity, because atm Redmayne is very good, but hundreds of other actors could deliver pretty much the same performance. If you have an actor of his calibre you should definitely put him to better use.
It's a three and a half production that could get much better, and I hope they'll do good use of all the previews. I have a ticket for next week and I'm tempted to return it and revist it in a few months.

Could someone show the songlist? I'm intrigued to know what has been added or cut for this production

I mean Hannah Waddingham is the closest thing to Beth Leavel we have, in terms of both belting and comedy chops

I've already seen it twice at the Criterion (I forgot what a jewel of a venue it is, I haven't been since 2014) and I absolutely loved it. It's not perfect and it is *slightly* too long, but it's so much fun and the cast is impeccable. I hope word of mouth works its magic, because it's a lovely show and deserves to run until spring with packed audiences.

I thought I read somewhere that there would have been discounted tickets for NHS workers, under 30s etc, but I can't find this piece of information anywhere – did I make it up?

Michael Gambon has got a dark interior. Plastered on his dressing room mirror are photos from Robert de Niro signed "Dear Mike, I admire your work, love always, Bob" that Gambon had written and sent to himself. this is the funniest story i have ever heard

Very puzzled. Having now found the booking, or rather been told what it is by the love theatre people I see that I happily booked something saying limited leg room, seats C stalls 20/21.my OH now wants to make sure he can actually sit there! But when I look at the seating plan they are at the end of a row and have limited sight which i dont mind for this particular show as it is one bloke who i hope will walk about a bit. So I’m wondering if any of you guys has been to this at the Harold Pinter and can tell me if the leg room has been compromised or is it a mistake and they mean sight lines?Or shall I suffer a difficult evening….. Yeah I sat at C21, which is just behind a pillar. The view is perfect but I found the legroom very limited - and I'm just 5'7". For the three hours of Virginia Woolf it was quite excruciating but this is shorter so it might be more bearable

He's so completely out of touch with reality that it's hard to say if this is comic or tragic. Welcome to the real theatregoing world Mark. I guess.

Just getting around to watching the second act and my jaw is dropping more and more with each song. The James Hewitt song, the "thriller in Manilla with Diana and Camilla" and as for the suggestion that the gays agreed to pose for photos with her as she promised to bring them eyeliner... I'm lost for words "I may be unwell, but I'm handsome as hell" captures the AIDS crisis with a depth that Tony Kushner can only dream of

I did not get tickets, but am desperate to see this in person. Might be no harm to call the box office every now and again. When we saw it last week, two people nearby at got returns earlier that same morning. Oh yeah or just regularly check the website, tickets pop up all the time

It got pretty good reviews, even some 5* ones! Variety was unimpressed, The Intipended loved it, and The Guardian, The Stage, Evening Standard & The Telegraph gave it 4*. I wonder if they are thinking about transferring it somewhere? it looks like the kind of production that ends up at BAM of St Ann's Warehouse in NY. The cast must be very busy so it's probably not easy to organize.
