Except in the original Variety article, which is several times longer than The Guardian reprint, he does lambast the casting of Gerard Butler. "The Phantom was too young, and the whole point of the Phantom is he needs to be quite a bit older than Christine." He's also "not a huge fan" of the 1973 adaptation of JCS. Variety article

For a while, the SJT brought forward its Thursday night show to 7pm, so it was possible to cross the road and catch the last train back to York (and maybe Leeds, too?). So having done that, it also had to bring the matinee forward. Now the evening show has returned to 7.30pm, but the matinee remains with a 1.30 start, which always feels slightly too early.
Out on the road, it's not uncommon for the week to start on Tuesday night, with matinees on Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday, which I think I would prefer were I talented enough to be a thespian. More time at home and less time to mope in digs!

There has been a change in management at the New Theatre, from local authority with a 500k annual subsidy, to HQ/Trafalgar. If they don't get the big shows they won't be able to pay the rent, let alone make a profit.

Unless I spent Thursday morning photographing the wrong building, I'm reasonably certain this is the home of the new Hytner and Starr theatre at King's Cross. The offices were going to be occupied by Facebook...but that was before you know what changed everything! In the same way that its older sibling is the Bridge Theatre, I wonder if this will be the Cross Theatre?

Died within 28 days of a positive test, which is rather different to dying of Covid. Plus we don't routinely test for flu in the UK. If we did, and used the same metric, the figure of 30,000 would be many times higher.
I'm content to be a "they" and have eyes rolled at me. I certainly won't be campaigning for anyone to loose their livelihood.

Australia is finished as the country we all thought it was. The Rubicon has been crossed.

That's quite a patch you're now covering, BurlyBeaR. 🙂 AUTUMN15 will get you a 15% discount at Nottingham...though not on the very cheapest seats.

I've just swung by The Lane ahead of today's matinee. It's very kind of Andrew to close the road for me, but completely unnecessary. He obviously doesn't know I was in the Tutfy Club. 🐿
If children under 3 aren't admitted, why is there a buggy park down the side, opposite the Fortune Theatre? Honestly, kids these days!
"Look Mummy, there's another Elsa." I suspect her poor mother will be hearing that quite a lot this afternoon.

When it comes to casting Tony, there is of course only one man for the job. Any plans for spring 2022 our david? 🙂

I've been sitting on my hands all afternoon, I really have, but as we're focussing on facts, I feel obliged to point out that Concord does not handle the licensing of ALW in the UK.

They could always do what they do in Huddersfield. The adults only performance of an amateur panto has a start time of 9.30pm on a Friday. That should avoid any confusion, especially with an advertised end time of near enough midnight!
It's currently sold better than the 'regular' performance on either side, so there is clearly a demand locally, which suggests there is a demand nationally.

This is probably the time to remind ourselves that if everything had gone to plan, Camden hadn't dragged its heels, and the Victoria Palace hadn't gone horribly over budget, the Ambassadors would no longer exist in its current form.
I'm sure modern structural engineering could remove many pillars, or at least make them considerably slimmer. And if it's the plasterwork and gilding we're all so attached to, both are relatively easy to replicate.
London's theatres are only going to get older and more anachronistic, so something has to happen, otherwise they'll become a national embarrassment.

A couple of years ago, as part of the Fun Palaces weekend, I went on a ghost tour of Sheffield's Lyceum Theatre. As we were told supposedly true stories, sundry members of staff would appear dressed as the ghosts being described to us.
When we went backstage, into the band room I think it was, one of my fellow attendees suddenly froze and went into a trance-like state for a few minutes. "I'm very sensitive," she explained. "I definitely felt something."
The problem is, everything behind the proscenium was built only 30 years ago, so why would old ghosts move into a new home?

There should now be a moratorium on newsstands and flower festooned swings for at least five years.
Having just watched the couples dance, I'm not sure we then needed an immediate slow-motion replay.
Nina was, for me, the revelation of the night.

Are we all ready? A 2 hours 20 minute show for about 45 minutes of dancing. I have snacks, and may find myself turning to drink sooner rather than later.
It's Claud I feel really sorry for. She's already done a three hour show on the wireless!

At the Wolverhampton Grand, where School of Rock has been this week, they have 'listening only' seats. No word of a lie. And they want an extra £4 off you in booking fees. And you have to buy two of the damned things so as not to leave a single seat.
They're a bargain £19.50 each; the restricted view seats are £32.50, plus booking fee.

Strike my earlier post about Friday matinees. And booking until 4 June, not the 5th. Seems I made the mistake of believing the ATG website. When will I learn?

Jamie Bogyo is as much Hungarian as he is American. Plus he was at RADA for as long as people go to RADA for. The very first line on his profile is literally about his right to work in the UK.

This may be another one for you firefingers, so I apologise if you feel like you're the only one currently doing any work. Touring the Lawrence Batley Theatre yesterday, our quide said something along the lines of the auditorium having an acoustic rating of 96. (She may have used a percentage.) If that's out of 100, I presume it must be very good, but what does it mean in layman's terms?

I had a lovely day, thank you, david. Methodist chapel on the outside, high-tech theatre on the inside. I bet most theatres in London's glittering West End don't have big screws under the stalls! The BBC had been forecasting heavy rain, so obviously it was sunny all day. Even the trains were on time. If I weren't busy, I'd go back on Saturday. One of the nearby bars is advertising a PA from The Cheeky Girls for freshers' week. Never let it be said we don't get the big stars in Yorkshire!

Some places quite well, others like Stockton... not so much. That is mental. Stockton?! Why Stockton? Someone must know someone. I've worked there and... the Stockton Globe I'm guessing? Seriously? 4 weeks at Manchester Opera House then Stockton?! How long have you worked in showbiz? The Stockton Globe only re-opened on 7 September...47 years after its last live performance! BooH will be its first week long engagement, and that isn't until February. Plenty of time yet.
