At the Menier last week the two seats next to me were empty (if you know the Menier this is a good thing). After the interval they arrived and I reckon it was a first date. The bloke was so apologetic saying that he hoped she wouldn’t get the wrong impression of him. I felt for him.

I think The Jamie Lloyd Company have the Playhouse for a season It will have, and if the Garrick gets City of Angels after Noises Off, the only two available early next year would be the Trafalgar Studios 1 and the Ambassadors. Could it work in either of those? The Menier's not massive either! I don't know those stages but it probably needs a bigger space than the Menier - it's a big cast (15?) and there are scenes that could do with extra space. But then the set is quite intimate. Would work OK with a proscenium though.

What surprises me is great reviews from what I have read, sold out and yet board members haven't seen it. Anyone booked to go? I saw it last Saturday. The problem is that it's very hard to write a review. The acting is good. The production and set work but don't set the world on fire. Personally I enjoyed it but I don't think the script is as clever as it thinks it is. It is very funny. No big spoilers but I'll say more in tags: {Spoiler - click to view} The set up takes a long time - so much I thought I'd misunderstood what the play was trying to do and it was simply a straightforward version of the Austen book.. But it's worth the wait.

Not HDM, but the trailer for War of the Worlds is finally out: it was due last winter but I think special effects stuff held it back. It was filmed locally and they're actually doing it in the correct period so I'm looking forward to it, though I wish they'd got a more exciting male lead than Rafe Spall. It's not the correct period. They've moved it from late Victorian to Edwardian. Not sure why - perhaps they wanted to put in some Edwardian technology? Looks quite good though.

We don’t do New Year parties so I’ve booked to see the Greenwich Theatre pants on New Years Eve. It’s always worth the money. No starts but a great script and dame. I hope it’s not pants!!!

But he had hips. Never seen a celeb look so right on their first dance. Well some people are always going to be better than others, and some will respond to the teaching and pick up choreography and technique more quickly (and some pros are better teachers of that than others too). Not sure what you're trying to imply? I’m not implying anything other than he looks like either he’s had experience or he naturally good at dancing. I’m not bothered which and fully enjoyed his contribution this week. I’m glad that the majority have at least some potential. Our goalkeeper excluded.

My theory is that Kelvin has dance experience. Possibly even ballroom. He was very good.
Perhaps they like a reserve with some experience so he/she can slot in more easily at the last minute.

It can't be impossible to reimagine those elements some other way? I'm not sure the fireworks etc are key to the production's success.
Anyway, short term the weather forecast looks good for next week for those of us with tickets. It is getting chillier though - I was glad of a good jumper last Thursday.

We’re booked for another visit next Wednesday. I thought it was excellent. And I understand the criticisms upthread except those about the clarity of the story. Maybe I was in tune with the direction but I thought the story was crystal clear: {Spoiler - click to view}Eva climbs the ladder using her sexuality, gets as high as she can and becomes an icon. Underneath the icon there’s a real, ruthless, flawed person. And it inevitably crashes and burns.
We’re watching that real person in the show. So she doesn't have the iconic Eva look but runs around in her undies instead. The mask is highlighted with the white dress being spray painted.
The little girl has only seen the icon hence dressing up in icon's clothes. And when Eva dies all that is left is the icon.
Che reminded me greatly of JCS and gave me a Jesus/Judas vibe with Eva/Che - the voice of dissent whispering in her ear. I saw the original cast many many many years ago and this version blows it away for storytelling in my opinion. Mind you that might just because I'm 30 years wiser!?!?

It’s stoped raining and I’ve tickets for tonight. Just sayin. I’m in tonight. Watching the forecast with interest! Dry at the moment. We might just get away with it. And goodness me the sausage rolls are enormous (not a spoiler btw).

No-show seats were filled from the standers - we were in the back row with seats on the outside aisle and were just lurking around our seats. With 5 mins to go, we sat down, a couple drifted into our vacated space against the wall and within 2 mins they were given a pair in the middle of the front row - argh!!! With 32 degrees predicted and a bank holiday I’m hoping for many no shows tonight.

Next people arrived at 7am. So 7am looks like a “safe” time to arrive.
Update. About 30 people by 7:30.

So far the most aggressive begging has been “I hope you get your tickets and can you spare some change”. But I suppose 15 of us is an army.

Bank holiday Monday and a hot day predicted. I’m 15th in the queue at 6:30. The queue started 2 hours ago so I’m told. I think my extra 2 hours in bed was worth it!

website Ina.fr made and sent me a DVD copy for a few Euros I think there's something similar in the USA that sell via amazon.com. Only problem is, I'm not sure they always own the appropriate copyright. Ah well if we disregard copyright then there's plenty available including lots of the NT Live recordings. FWIW I think more will become available legally over time. For example the BBC have digitised pretty much all their archive and streaming technology is well established. The problem is making sure all the participants are paid appropriately - not a trivial problem. I'm impressed by the BFI Player - lots of rare items and at a good price. For example it's the only place that have two of Joe Orton's plays to stream and they're asking £1 each.

To back up the comments on vegetarianism, it definitely was seen as a major aberration and some sort of indication the person was unhinged, hence the vegetarian chain ironically calling itself Cranks. I went vegetarian in the 80s and was met with a mixture of bafflement, pity, derision and mocking. And some of those reactions were from friends and even family. My grandparents were vegetarian in the 30s. Mind you they also met at a nudist camp so you're probably right.

I wish you Nick and your wife well, speedy recovery. Plan something nice for later in the summer when your wife will be mobile and wanting a treat. Thanks Evita in a wheelchair in September is the plan. She uses a wheelchair anyway so we’re not cheating. And a friend has hinted at Come From Away” at some time tba. To be honest sitting together in our own bed eating lasagne (vegan in honour of our recently converted son)watching the telly sounds like heaven.

I need to put this somewhere and this feels the right place.
My wife had a hip replacement on Tuesday. She has lots of medical complications so we were very nervous. However the operation went very well. The first day and night was hell - she was vomiting and in huge pain. She couldn’t stand up (they start you very early with physio) without almost fainting, very low blood pressure and absolutely non-moving leg.
Second day she was able to stand up and walk a little before collapsing exhausted.
Yesterday she started using crutches, her leg mobility has returned and she could go to the toilet so could have the catheter removed.
The recovery has been just amazing. Other people went home one the second day but she’s getting there. She’s in until Monday as she has Addison’s so could go into adrenal shock (a killer) but she’s had the ok from the physio to go home.

Same people. Sat next to me and had a right old chin wag. Obviously involved on the production side but mostly chatting about other people. Most of what I heard made no sense to me eg somebody being offered both moulin and another big show and pondering whether that person could do both because of the delay to Moulin.
The moral is not to plug headphones in while travelling on public transport.

Well don’t out the person you’ve overheard!! e. I couldn’t and wouldn’t. All I’ll say is they aren’t involved in the show. They were passing on what they had heard from someone else so Chinese whispers could be happening here.

I’ve overheard some gossip on the train. It means very little to me so please ignore if it’s rubbish. Apparently they’re bringing in a Sugarbabe for 10 weeks. A current member of the cast (waitress who wears glasses?) has been laid off for that time unpaid ( that sounds a bit mean to me). Grumbles about American interference.

My opinion is series two is a slow starter. Bear with the first two episodes. They’re not bad but there’s better to come after.

I remember they had a few problems in London as well with the sparse coverage and sometimes had to cut songs if the wrong people were absent. ). I saw it at theVaults when both the black women were ill. They cut some (White guys/black guys I think) and rejigged some other parts. Bring black or white matters quite a bit in this show. I think some shows were cancelled just after I went. Even more fell ill. Obviously contagious.
