I also reviewed it and my criticisms were slightly harsher but it is still worth it for McDiarmid's scenes, an actor who not only gets Powell but gets why he did what he did. The issue I have was mostly production rather than script or acting, though it was running far longer than 2hrs 15 when I saw it viewfromthecheapseat.com/2017/10/04/what-shadows-park-theatre/This is a very interesting review. Thanks for sharing it. I think it's Chris Hannan, rather than Chris Hannah, and you've also got "Nicholas Let Provost". I also didn't follow exactly what you meant by "Boris’s basic bitch articles are nothing compared to planning Powell made to make ‘Rivers of Blood’s the huge deal it became", but perhaps I'm just being stupid.

I was under the impression this had officially opened, but I can't see any reviews of it, except dating back to 2016 when it was in Birmingham.

This seems like something dreamed up by the theatre cognoscenti Bordeaux mentions, rather than something done with a clear understanding of the commercial outlook. Anne Marie Duff and Kenneth Cranham are both great, but clearly don't have FANS in the same way as, for instance, Martin Freeman and Sarah Lancashire (or for that matter Tamsin Greig). I looked at the prices and thought I would spend my money elsewhere.

There is a slightly unimpressed review in The Stage, though it lays the blame on Graham's over obvious jokes and is very positive about Tamsin.

You’ve got to admire the way Sir David Hare ingratiates himself with every successive NT AD to preserve his subsidised lifestyle. The only exception was Trevor Nunn who didn’t rate him and Hare threw an enormous strop at that. I wouldn't think what he gets for a National Theatre production is anywhere near what he makes from films like The Hours and The Reader. That's not to say I feel even a flicker of excitement at the thought of another play by him.

I couldn't get on board with this. I haven't seen a dire review anywhere, but it's noticable that the reviews are a lot less favourable this time round than in 2015. Perhaps the cast change means it has lost some of the power it had when performed by the company who originally devised it.

I've read the reviews today and am not feeling very excited about seeing it. Mainly 3 stars, but cagey 3 stars, and some 2s (Telegraph, ES). There's also a 1 star pan from Mark Shenton, who doesn't seem to have proof-read his review, as he says that "Hard though it is ever to justify the potential taking of innocent lives, there's not even a solid moral undermining to what they hope to achieve" and "Of the cast of four, the three protagonists spend a big chunk of the play with their faces masked to each other and us, which makes their acting a whole lot interesting to watch."

This play by Guillermo Calderon has its first preview tomorrow. I'm interested to hear people's thoughts about it, as I'm going later in the run.

Thanks, Honoured Guest, I was unaware of that. I will look into going.

I am sorry I didn't get around to seeing this. I suppose it may make a return or possibly even transfer, but perhaps that's only wishful thinking.

I like Juliet Stevenson and am thinking about going to this. I haven't seen the play before. Has anyone seen the play or this current production?

That's so true. Hytner is judged on the success of The History Boys, Curious Incident, War Horse, and One Man Two Guvnors, rather than things like Fram, People and Greenland.

There's no way Goold will replace Norris, and as the previous commenter says this isn't what the Standard interview proposes or foresees. I thought that, with a few exceptions, the new writing was weak during Hytner's twelve years in charge, and I don't think Norris is doing worse, although Common and Salome were two terrible flops in a row in the Olivier, so I do understand why the knives are out.

I am interested in going to this, but am unfamiliar with the writer. It seems a risk to let someone untested loose in this space, or maybe I've missed something and he's more proven than I know. I like Gina McKee a lot, which is, along with the subject matter, my motivation for going. First preview tonight, so I am interested to hear reactions.

Thank you. That review is not encouraging, so I think I'll wait for other comment before booking.

Has anyone seen this? I am considering going, but will wait to see some reviews, and wonder if any forum members have been yet.

Will: someone who already writes for the Guardian. Susanna Clapp seems unlikely. Should: Andrej Lukowski, Matt Trueman Could: any left leaning critic who has the knowledge and appetite for the workload. Sam Marlowe would be great, but that won't happen in a month of Sundays.

As far as I know, he has always been teetotal.
