I just do not understand why the ability to sing very loudly or riff equates to talent. Not seen the production but its always similar. Whether its Effie singing And I Am Telling You or Elphaba singing Defying Gravity. To me these are terrific belters but does not make them the best best talent. It makes them able to belt in the specific role. Effie is designed to be a showstopper as is Ephaba. This is the difference, in my opinion, between Amber and Marisha. Amber can sing louder and hit some higher notes, and arguably better than Marisha can. But Marisha has a certain light and shade to her voice. She'd be equally as incredible if she didn't belt (even my mum said this, and she is not versed in the technical side of singing or performing) - she has a special way of being completely conscious of the emotion, the phrase, the register, which melts together and creates a beautifully rounded vocal performance. There are as many highs (aka belting or singing loudly) as there are lows (aka beautiful, carefully placed almost soprano moments). I think your comment is fair - when it comes to female leads, there are lots of hysteria over the ones that shout, and the ones that carefully plan their performance are often overlooked because they don't riff as much. Which is a shame.

Oh. My. Quivering. Life. Marisha Wallace. What did I just witness??! I don't want to say she's better than Amber but...she's miles better than Amber. I actually 'get' Effie as a character now. Whilst I think I'd rather listen to Amber on a CD, Marisha gave her soul today. And it was only a matinee performance. I enjoyed the show tenfold compared to my previous visit - maybe it was to do with sitting in better seats, maybe it was Marisha... incomparable experience though. Marisha's characterisation was perfection. Loved it. (We also saw the understudy for Lorell who was funky and powerful - with arms and shoulders to die for)

Going to the show this afternoon, totally didn't digest the info in this thread properly and link it to the fact I'm going - will be good to see the show again with a different Effie this time.

Strange how performances resonate in different ways isn't it - I genuinely felt like her voice in the mid-range didn't carry enough substance for INTG. I never 'got' that song when Rachel sang it, it always felt like a gap filler - but has been one of my favourite moments with other actresses. I really liked her Elphaba, she's in my top 10 out of the 20-something actresses I've seen, I just think her mid-range let's her down. On the other hand, I'm in the minority with you re: Dianne P's glinda! Love the woman, loved her in everything I've seen her in except Glinda!!

In relation to the above, I have to disagree - I feel like Rachel was super powerful, and her belt was incredible. But in the quieter moments she sounded weak - beginning of WAI and INTG fell flat a few times for me. Someone like Willemijn makes INTG a powerful number, without the explicit power that you get from DG or NGD.

Has anyone else here not seen Willemijn yet, surely can't be the only member in that boat? I did! Thought she was fresh yet refined - awesome vocals and a wonderful characterisation.

Ahaha exactly, she has been with the show for years so I imagine that, in an emergency, she could play the role. For the sake of knowing what a swing is though, they are required to know the ensemble tracks, unless they are listed as an understudy, in which case they know the ensemble and that specific role(s). Sorry if my original post didn't come across properly - I'm trained in MT so am aware what a swing is haha...just wondered specifically if Hannah Toy had ever been on.

I thought we'd established Hannah Toy was fifth cover midwife? I knew she was committed to the show but breeding green girls is taking that commitment up to a whole new level! Out of interest.. has Hannah Toy ever been on as Nessa/Elphaba/Glinda? As female swing she has to cover every role in the building...and there's no way this fan base could have someone accounting for every single show...

Don't even know why you're discussing it. It's not like the casting is a secret. Jackie is coming!!!
Edit: DISCLAIMER. I do not know this as fact, but I do know how predictable the casting team are, and it is no secret how much they love Jackie.

Oh come off it. It's not 'wrong' it's people's prerogative. It might be a bit weird but they can do what they like - it gives people a place to fit in, a way of socialising, whatever it does it's not 'wrong'. No actor/actress has gone in 'blind' to Wicked in a sense that they don't understand the crazy fandom - it's all part and parcel of it. They can avoid it if they work hard enough - Katie Rowley Jones avoided it like the plague, although I'm not convinced she didn't actually live there.

I've booked but only because this is my all time favourite show and my other half wants to know what all the fuss is about. When I saw the prices, though, my eyes nearly popped out my head. I guess there's not many seats so they need to make more money per seat - but, you know, then there's those prices...

Was at the show tonight - it was definitely Amber!! Just trying to reconfigure my facial features because pretty much the whole cast just screamed in my face for 2.5 hours. Don't get me wrong I enjoyed it! Just found it somewhat relentless. I felt there was lack of light and shade. It was big number after big number after belting after big number after belting and it all kind of merged into one big melting pot of (nonetheless incredibly impressive) noise. I would be lying if I said it wasn't an amazing show - stunning costumes and great sound / lighting design putting the icing on an incredible cake (the cake being the stellar cast - mostly) and I feel guilty in saying it wasn't for me. I didn't have time to breathe and take it in, which I need when I go to a big show like that. I get that the story is relentless, their success just snowballed and didn't stop for years and years and they all lost track, I get that. Just found it somewhat hard to process.... That being said, I will be making a return visit! Undeniably enjoyable for even the harshest critic I think!

Speaking of riffs, Carina riffed part of Thank Goodness on Friday and it was a very strange moment for me. I'm not a massive fan of many Elphaba riffs let alone a Glinda riff. My eye roll went through the back of my head. Carina does that one at every show now She's been doing it since July To be honest I don't like it, nor do I think it's appropriate or adds anything to the song - so I couldn't care if she does it every show or did it once, I still don't like it...... #personalopinion

Please post more reviews in the future, parts of this were very entertaining! Agreed on the popcorn front. I don't understand why people need to eat while watching a show. Thank you! I try.... I'll admit I ate popcorn once. Did you loudly chew it with your mouth open? And then repeatedly click the lid back on the bucket after every handfull? I have her a death glare a few times but she was only around 11 so throwing a punch may have been frowned upon...

Interval tweet: Carina is very delicate as Glinda. In the way she looks, moves and acts. She's very graceful - however it's making me realise that I prefer a more clumsy, ditzy Glinda.
I forgot how pure Willemijn's voice sounds in person - adore her characterisation of Elphaba. It's refined and detailed yet fresh. No big riffs per se but there is a lot of extra flicks at the end of her notes which I'm really enjoying.
James Darch as Fiyero - very easy on the eye, not the best singer but I am enjoying his acting choices in the role. He's not a particularly 'posh' Fiyero, but the characterisation of depth beyond the shallow exterior is really coming through. I like him.
These sound guys need to sort their sh*t out... Can't hear vocals pretty much at all, but when those bloody sleigh bells are shaken, the ground shakes. I swear I know the whole of act 1 by sleigh bell now.
Also - I wish the AV wouldn't sell popcorn. Would you have ever thought that 5 separate people could eat popcorn at a higher decibel than Willemijn's belt? Well it's possible. And very real. I'm v anti-popcorn right now. Ban the popcorn.

Since I came in September the merchandise has completely changed - the teacup is cute but not sure what I think to the t-shirt with the cast album song names on the back..... seems random?

Going to the show tonight - hope Ollie is ok, although would be good to see what the understudy has to offer. Going to see Willemijn but would also be very happy to see Alice! Always wanted to see someone specifically before but I don't really mind what I see on that cast board later for the first time in my 54 times of seeing the show...

Went to see this show today. Thought Charlie carried it almost single handedly at times - overall, though, a strong show with a strong cast but I just adored Charlie. He truly deserves every award coming his way. If you looked for a definition of the word 'star' I think his face would be in almost every dictionary. Proverbially of course.

Jeeeez - was hoping to catch this show when I go to NYC in June but didn't want to book tickets as have regretted not being flexible the past couple of times I've been. Went on the website for this show yesterday and saw that for the whole weekend I'm there there's 3 orchestra seats left! Had to book my seat as this is really the only show I definitely want to see (I love a young male lead). Shocked at how well it's selling!!!

I think of HAIR - and the way Claude separates from the tribe. I think it's pretty tragic for the tribe to lose their best friend to the exact thing they're protesting for. I never sat with a dry eye at the end of HAIR.
I think Eponine is pretty tragic - more so than Fantine because Eponine knew she was destined for more. She knew she was on a level with Marius but he never looked twice until it was too late. Fantine just lost all self respect then died - I think it's far more tragic that Eponine knew she was destined for more and then ended up getting shot....

That whole bucket sound issue thing in the catfight scene I have notice at all four times i have seen Rachel, its up until she takes that hat off but very noticable! Have you ever noticed it with any other Elphabas? I've only seen two, but I've only ever noticed it with Rachel I've noticed it loads - it's not a new thing. I even seem to remember there being the same issue on Broadway and the UK Tour... same sound design I suppose.
