I’m sure we can all think of a few people who would fall into this category... sportsmen, pop stars, writers of bad musical theatre etc. I know the tax tax system is flawed and we would all like these legal “loopholes” to be closed but for whatever reason they haven’t been. So while that’s the case I don’t think anyone using them to avoid paying tax should be honoured with a gong. And yes, anyone can shoot holes in that, not least by mentioning how The Queen’s tax affairs are managed, but it just feels right to me. Mind you I’d scrap the whole damned thing anyway, apart from honours for normal working people who’ve done extraordinary things. I think it is the civil servants gongs that annoy me most. They really are just doing their jobs. Celebrities at least take on charity work which they don’t have to I suppose. The system is largely based on recommendations.

This is a slight irony to this being splashed by The Guardian given that their tax arrangements are very, very, very carefully managed via offshore trusts and the like.
They love to take the moral high ground whilst also pursuing a very aggressive tax management strategy of their own.

There’s an amnesty after three years. If the person can show that they’ve been paying up after three years they becoming eligible for the gong. Ken Dodd’s tax shenanigans were decades ago.
I think people who live in other countries shouldn’t be eligible either. Ringo Star for example. If you want the gong, get over here and contribute to the eceonomy.

Why does Ken Dodd get a knighthood who has a criminal record for tax evasion (which ultimately is theft from society) and should last for life, not three years and on top of that convicted for stalking, which is an heinous crime and you don’t get much lower than that. Than David Beckham who has no criminal record and in Singapore helped to win the Great Britians bid for the 2012 Olympics, which was amazingly successful, but also often vilified in the Daily Mail because he is precieved no to be intelligent?

I think you misread some headlines. Ken Dodd was never convicted of stalking anyone - a woman was convicted of stalking him!

Doddy was also found "Not Guilty" of tax evasion as well. He always said there were no hard feelings, and whenever he was in town, the tax office used to send a car for him. He always managed to jump out of the way in time. Anyway, he also pointed out that when it started, income tax was one penny in the pound - he thought it still was. Anyway, it's called the "Inland Revenue" and he lived near the sea. Oh I miss you, Ken. Sir Ken is sadly missed. Why they had to even mention him in that report I don't know. He was an OBE several years before his Tax trial and was found not guilty so no honour was removed from him. He had to wait 35 years since getting his OBE before he got his Knighthood. |
