I'm already planning a trip to Cardiff for Rosenkavalier - my favourite opera - assuming that it doesn't tour, as their summer season usually doesn't.
I think that the ON Kiss Me Kate was credited in the programme as a co-production with WNO. They probably just mean "new to WNO", as opera companies have a habit of saying "new" when they actually mean "just new to us".

Ah yes, I'm sure you're right.
Assuming dates work out I'll be up there for a Macbeth / Merchant weekend I think, and also probably Rosenkavalier which I don't think I've ever seen.

Oh, you really must see Rosenkavalier at some point, whether WNO's or elsewhere. Parts of it are indescribably beautiful & moving. I think I'd like the Trio to be the last music I hear before dying - not that I'm planning to die just yet, got far too much theatregoing booked! |

I remember they did that with Sweeney Todd last year, advertising it as a "new production" even though it had already been performed in Dundee, Leeds and Manchester (in the round). |

Great looking season. On a related note I was going into the WMC as the WNO matinee was letting out on Tuesday, the comment from one audience member was "well that was better than I expected anyway"
Not sure which one she'd seen of this season but good to know her presumably low expectations were exceeded....

I wonder if it was a public dress rehearsal of Nozze di Figaro? The only opera of the spring season that has officially opened so far is Barbiere di Siviglia & that hasn't had any matinees. |

Ah given the timing it was likely the public dress rehearsal. How could I forget those. (I spent a couple of years front and back of house on them and they are unholy nightmares of a thing, mainly because letting the WNO crowd loose on unreserved seating is asking for trouble and the theatre also enjoys doing a fire alarm test during public dress runs)

Unreserved seating in a place the size of the WMC must be awful. When you see the complaints on the Southwark Playhouse thread for a theatre maybe a 20th of the size!

It was an utter nightmare. Particularly as the invited crowd have shall we say "strong" opinions about their place in the hierarchy and therefore where they should be sitting. Also passive aggressive queuing at it's finest!!

I wonder why WNO didn't just allocate seats? I've never actually been to one, not being able to afford the membership, but I'm sure from what I've heard from those that have that the ROH's public rehearsals aren't a seating free for all.

I don't know really, it's just 'always been that way' I think because when they started doing it there weren't as many on the invite list and it didn't matter quite so much? it also doesn't help that it's a mix of 'old guard' WNO audience and 'industry people' a lethal combination  |

Very exciting news. Not often a major opera puts on two operas I've never heard of in the space of one year. Puts some other companies to shame. I could have done without Kiss Me Kate perhaps - for which I would have substituted Walton's Troilus and Cressida to make it three rarities in a year - but it's a great show in the right hands.
