Oh dear, Phantom, and I was just about to tell you that we've finally got the last of the Grammar Squad's heads from out the pilot's arse. He's a bit sore but he now knows that he should have kept his wits about him. He would have been fine with this lot, but he turned to sort out the flame, and that's when it all went arse-upwards. Still, it could have been a lot worse... Apart from this, an uneventful day on Theatre Board forum. As they say; Beware of the Ides of March.

Can we rename this thread 'how too piss everyone off'? Just to put things into perspective, most of the 1000+ members of Theatre Board have made no contribution to this thread for whatever reason. ggesrsten's initial post attracted 14 'likes' in seven hours which suggested that he was not alone in his views. In fact this number outweighs the number of people who might be perceived as 'pissed off'. A few have overreacted, posting repeatedly and drawing more attention to themselves than was necessary. Then there was the usual crowd (actually very small in number when you reread the whole thread) who like to descend on any hot topic, whatever it might be about, posting endlessly and rather aggressively throughout the day and who have stirred up those who might have genuinely felt aggrieved because they thought the post was aimed at them. So it's hardly everyone that is pissed off. Far from it. Yes, of course I was being silly though. Why don't everyone put down the internet and go tell someone real and close to them that you love them, the world is too round for people to get upset over something that really donut matter

Oh - I missed the flame up (turned up late, so I guess the tone of my posting is a bit off-kilter - I assumed it was a fairly light-hearted discussion) - but nine pages on this - goodness!

Here's one that really makes me cross "Happy belated birthday". I get told off on facebook for correcting people by saying it's the greeting that is late, not the birthday!

Ok. I'm a little sorry I started this up. I wasn't trying to stir the pot. It was simply my pet peeve, and something inside me compelled me to make it public. It was not directed at any particular poster. I did not and do not want to be a grammar police officer. I do not think less of any person who posts here based simply on grammar or spelling errors. (I may think less of them for content.) I am sure I make grammar mistakes and misspell words, especially if I am posting from a mobile device as my thumb dexterity is basically nil.

Thanks for that, and I do appreciate where you were coming from (I agreed with the original sentiment in my first post!)
For me also, if I'm being viewed as overly-whatever, it's the notion of the 'Grammar Nazi' across social media that really gets to me, and that's what I started by broadly commenting on. None of which was directed personally at ncbears who has been lovely and polite and got far more than they bargained for! However some of the turns this post have taken have been fairly nasty and dregged up all manner of stuff. Personally I'm saying no hard feelings to anyone and drawing a line. Or fishing for a carp with my line. Either one.

In my defense, I am across the Pond in the middle of what used to be the United States of America, so time differential is what it is! (So, I guess y'all should just think of me as just another yankee who muddles in European affairs, mucks it up, and then leaves.)

ncbears. I'd posted something longer but it came up with an error message about not being able to find the forum. I know what you were getting at and it's fine to air that. I took no offence at the original post at all. My biggest concern is the long term health of the community as a whole. I worry about lurkers being scared away from joining by threads that end up like this one has.

Let's try to stay positive eh. I don't think guests are as put off by robust or difficult discussions as you may fear. In fact we always get a flurry of new joiners when there's a hot topic. We haven't for this one though, which suggests that most people couldn't give a toss

And for our posters for whom English is their second language - I have nothing but respect. At work I have to talk to people all around the world and their English is almost always excellent. ncbears . I'd posted something longer but it came up with an error message about not being able to find the forum. I had that as well. It said the forum had been taken by an angry bear, which is particularly amusing considering who created it.

No great you had the courage and magnanimous to apologies. Actually I think you are one of the best posters on here. Obviously Should Have/Should Of has stirred the pot, but as another poster said on page 2, it is simply the way we speak in South East London, would you be offended if someone from Newcasle called a little boy a 'baine', so we tend to type as we speak. In the past I have re-read my posts and cringed and should have/of remembered to check my post before posting, sometimes it is my grammar letting me down, other times it is Apple letting me down!!! This thread has brought other issues to a head, where Emily got offended by someone making really a light hearted joke about dyslexia, but then again if you suffer from this condition it is understandable also to get offended, I watched by brother suffer from this debilitating illness over many years, so isn't lost on me that you have gone on to get a PHD. Before today we were a convivial community, Spring is a lovely time of year, with the crocuses and daffodils coming out, so let's take pause and draw a line in the sand and tommorrow is 8th March.

Why can't we simply discuss calmly things that might p**s us off without getting defensive or turning the conversation personal. We should rise above the Trump syndrome. It's possible, although I do understand feelings sometimes get in the way.
I, for one, am pleased this thread started.
