Hello people of Theatreboard! Can I ask you what (if any) theatre replays / broadcasts / radio programmes you know of coming up this holiday that you would recommend? We read that Glenda's Lear was cancelled, but maybe you know of other TV/radio theatre performances over the hols?
A few years ago, flopped out on late night Boxing Day cognac, I was delighted to catch the film version of Glengarry Glen Ross. It was a total channel-hopping accident, but I feel that this year I should be organised and three-line whip our family viewing/listening with something we might see on the stage in the future.
We don't have sky or fancy pay-per-view channels, just ordinary BBC/ITV.
And if there isn't anything wondrous, I wonder what is your dream theatre-on-the-telly scheduling?
(I'm sure that mine would be heavy on the Hollow Crown...)

This is an excellent post and I'll be watching the answers closely! I know there is some Alan Bennett on Christmas Eve on BBC2, but other than that the festive TV schedule is a blank sheet for me. Any other tips??

Thanks for the heads up guys.looking forward to the Alan Bennett and Dawn French progs. Saves me forking out £4.50 on the Radio Times.
Caught a film yesterday afternoon called Nativity with Martin Freeman that was surprisingly good. It was pratically a musical.

A Christmas Carol themed Friday Night Is Music Night on Radio 2. On 23 Dec - featuring JOJ, Rosalie Craig and Mark Gatiss.
Mischief Theatre's Peter Pan Goes Wrong - 31 Dec, BBC1 I think.

It will be interesting to see how Mischief works on the radio - given that so much of what they (usually) do is physical.

That's exactly what I thought when I heard they were doing a radio show. I suppose they can do a bit with sound effects but it's not the same. Oh well, only 2 weeks to wait & see... er, hear!
Thinking of no visuals, has anyone tried reading the TPTGW & PPGW scripts before having seen the shows? If so do they work when you don't have memories of the visuals?

Great evening, also has Louise Dearman (she and Rosalie do a "Sisters" from Whire Christmas duet). Sean Escofrey (excuse spelling). Katie Melua does a stunning, stinking number with a Georgian choir. |

Not theatre but great drama and very funny to boot. Bill Nighy playing Bill Nighy. Well Charles Paris in the latest mystery. Tomorrow is episode 3 of 4 but all still on radio iplayer.

Railway Children tonight, don't forget. Sky Arts (via Now TV for me), interesting it's filmed at The Kings Cross Theatre when the DVD was filmed in York, well according to Amazon.

Turns out that the really unmissable thing for us oldies was the BBC4 documentary "Bob Monkhouse - The Last Stand". Extraordinary. Available on BBC iPlayer.

The Mischief Theatre Radio 2 thing on Christmas Day was so well received that if you complain about anything else they ask you before you submit the complaint whether your complaint is addressed by this - ssl.bbc.co.uk/complaints/complaint/R2Xmasshow/ or by an answer to complaints about Robbie Williams' New Years Eve concert on BBC1. |

^Ye gods! I've just read that & I'm not sure whether to laugh or cry. I guess most if not all of the complainers missed the point that it was deliberately incompetent. I loved it, of course, but I did wonder at the time if people who hadn't seen the stage shows would get it.
