Harry Styles was mooted for Fiyero.... Fiyeeeeeeeeero! Wasn't he? There were rumours. But please no. Joseph Gordon-Levitt is famous enough and he's a pretty good singer. Good enough for Fiyero anyway. Good grief no. Not cute, and pulls a funny face in order to reach very reachable notes. EJECT!

Of course you know who they could cast as Fiyero (Fiyeeeeeero!) and guarantee a huge hit financially? Just not sure if he can act.... But who knows? *cough*JustinBieber*cough*

And Taylor Swift for Glinda, obviously.

Not sure 'pretty good' will cut it. I actually think that Styles would make a great Fiyero. If Christopher Nolan is happy to cast him in an acting role I wouldn't think it's outside the realms of possibility, as that's the unknown quantity. Pretty good will cut it for Fiyero It's not like Harry Styles is an amazing singer either.

Thoughts on Kristen Bell as Glinda? Not sure if she can hit the high notes in No one mourns the wicked, but other than that she's a great singer and she would act it really well

She nearly punctured my eardrums in Les Mis. I have to to put earmuffs on the dog when I watch the movie. (That's a lie I don't have a dog)

I get the feeling that this is one of those occasions where the casting is going to be slated whoever gets it given then long debates about how performer X riffs on one particular note or pronounces one particular word... And then we will all go and watch the film anyway!
With the wonders of post production and / or miming to a different singer, anyone can be made to sound good. Unless of course you are Pierce Brosnan.

Lea Michele can't act though BB... She does one charachter really well- Lea Michelle... I still can't see Katharine roaring the flying part or NGD... but it is film not theatre- different beast. I was sure Samantha Barks would have been brought up by now. I'm not the biggest fan, but she definitely the best singer in the LM film
I think with right use of cgi, Idina can pull it off- girl looks so good.. But I have such a huge soft spot for Idina maybe I'm biased
And Kristen Bell is such a sweety and bubbly and fun and her soprano is gorgeous. I wouldn't call glinda's an easy singing role though
Ptwest os right though, I'll literally see it no mater who's cast (even Beiber)

Unless of course you are Pierce Brosnan. If anyone can be made to soun good, then why didn't they do this for the Les Mis movie? But you're right, whoever gets cast, people will be debating about it. But I think the Phantom and Les Mis movies were big fiascos when it came to casting. I just wish that for once they'd cast the leads based solely on skill. They can cast stars for all the supporting roles for all I care, but Elphaba has to be an amazing singer. I hope that for this movie they just use the old method again and record the singing in advance. As well as it works in the theatre, it doesn't seem to work for movies. Singing skills aside, there was something not right about the sound of the singing in the Les Mis movie.

It was just a thought. I think that when it comes to screen actresses, there are few who I think would be able to sing the role well. Idina as Elphaba in the movie is literally worst case scenario for me. I'd rather have Bieber or Harry Styles as Fiyero than Idina as Elphaba. But that's just my opinion. I never meant to say Glinda is an easy singing role, but compared to Elphaba I think it's very doable for many singers. For example popular is mostly about the acting. It still takes a good singer but it doesn't have all those crazy belted notes. I think Kristen Bell would be perfect for Glinda.

Regarding the les mis film, I think Tom Hopper was aiming for hyper realism, and misrable, in hyper realism does not equal perfectly trained voices.. Ann hathaway said some (contraversial) stuff regarding the subject of the non perfect singing in an interview but I cant remmember exactly what she said. I fear they might aim for something similar with Wicked, and follow the train thought that great singing (that has a "musical theatre sound") is not relatable and doesn't sell. I hope they don't though

I hope they don't though Ugh, typical Hollywood logic. Musical theatre is about amazing singing. Musical theatre actors learn how to act through song. Hollywood actors seem to only be able to act by talking rhythmically instead of singing. I get that in some scenes and songs it creates a nice effect. To some extent I liked the fact that she did that in I dreamed a dream, but she did it for the entire song, and the other actors did it as well. Most of the solos where ruined because of that. What have I done, I dreamed a dream, Empty chairs and empty tables were all ruined because of the fact that half the time they were just saying the words instead of singing. The only ones that reallyt sung their solos were Sam Barks and Russell Crowe. That's the one good thing that Russell Crowe did. His singing wasn't great, but at least he sang his songs. So I hope that for Wicked they'll just do it the old fashioned way and make a legit recording in a studio before filming it.

Do we know whether this will be a "live" recording such as the Les Mis film or dubbed in production like say Chicago was?
It absolutely shouldn't make a difference to casting, but if it's the latter you could see them going for a named/star actress who could be helped in post-production rather than needing a belter who could do it live?!

I hope they do a dubbed version. Live singing sounds amazing in the theatre, but it didn't sound as great in the Les Mis movie. Even with the few people that did sing well, the sound itself just wasn't rich enough. Movies just aren't the right medium for live singing.

The movie isn't even a tangible thing- it's a thought at this point. I think the only progress made is maybe the producers have started testing different writers for the script, and maybe talk of a director- I think it was mentioned at some interview, but I could be wrong.
Edit: but than again Hollywood is so secretive for all I know they've already cast it!

Edit: but than again Hollywood is so secretive for all I know they've already cast it! There's an article that says Stephen Daldry will direct and Winnie Holzman is in the process of writing the screenplay. And that thing you said about for all you know they've already cast it, I've literally been hoping that for months. I hope they just suddenly announce a cast and say we start filming next month. It probably won't turn out that way, but I guy can hope

Stephen Schwartz is writing 4 new songs for the Wicked movie! Wow, alot more than I expected! I just thought maybe one, two a push. True. I thought 1 too. Just for the oscars. Now this means they'll have to get rid o more songs too...

Hmm, not necessarily. Through the new songs the could (possibly) tell the back story of such characters as Nessarose, Dr. Dillamond, Boq or Mdme. Morinle

I've always thought Nessa, Boq and Fiyero could use a good song. And actually, Glinda should have a big song of her own as well. I know she has Thank Goodness, but she doesn't have a real solo like Elphaba does. But of course that would make the movie a lot longer, so I can't see how can add songs without cutting others. That is considering the fact that hollywood almost always cuts songs, or shortens songs. They ruined a lot of Les Mis songs by shortening them for the movie

2019!?!!!!!!!!! Wouldn't put all your eggs into one basket that this will get made.... *Facepalm* Of course it will get made. The date of release doesn't mean that it won't get made at all. It will definitely get made considering the success of other musical movies, and also the fact that they've wanted to make it for years. They're already 4 days into development, so they've definitely started. Writing for new songs + script + an entire movie score + build all the sets and costumes and make them seem life like + find a suitable cast (which is very difficult in this case) + record it (probably record the singing first and the acting second) + edit it and add special effect.... It takes a while.
