This clip from Letterbox is hilarious because the two contestants take so long to work out the answer and you can see Mel, the other contestants and the audience losing the will to live. Oh my heavens! I would have loved to have seen the young woman's face at the moment the answer was revealed... any bets on whether or not she recognized the name?

Has anyone watched One Question? It's decent although some of the questions are fairly easy if you use a combination of process of elimination and knowing events.

Jeremy Paxman is stepping down as host of University Challenge with his replacement being announced later this week.

I am sure someone could step up and replace Jeremy, as did the excellent Clive Myrie, a brilliant replacement on Mastermind for John Humphries. Besides I always though Jeremy came across as Pompous and more recently stale.

My guess is Laura Kuenssberg or Emma Barnett.

I'm glad to see Jeremy go, although obviously not given he is unwell. I hated when he scoffed at contestants for not knowing something from the classics, but never when they didn't know something from science. Just because you did the Classics Jeremy doesn't mean that everyone does or should. As the saying goes, "it's only simple if you know it". Besides, he seemed to be struggling a bit with the quick fire questions from last year's Christmas specials, so I suspect his ill-health has quite a lot to do with it.

Of all the names I have seen in the media this far, Dara O'Briain is the one that appeals the most. He has wit and warmth. And he also comes with credible intellect.
The least credible option I have seen this far is June Sarpong who would be a really lightweight choice
My first thought was Kirsty Wark. But I recently watched an episode of a history quiz she once hosted and it really wasn't a good fit for her style.
Suzannah Lipscomb would be a viable possibility. Much as I would enjoy watching her, Mary Beard is probably too old for the gig now.
I am expecting a female BBC news regular to actually be announced. And we will all adjust. But there will be some tutting.

Now Dara O’Brian and news last week that the excellent Mock the Week has been cancelled. It is far and away the funniest show on the box.

The only part of Mock the Week I watch is the final round. The rest, like similar 'topical' shows across the media, I simply avoid.
But the final section is always good fun

UC is actually made by ITV, so perhaps it will be an ITN favourite. Would the BBC allow that?
I was very disappointed when JP suddenly stopped wearing a tie mid-way through the last series. You need a certain gravitas for that sort of role, which is simply not possible in an open neck shirt. 👔

The Torygraph seem to think the omnipresent Fiona Bruce wanted the job but has been passed over in favour of Amol Rajan. Never heard of him.

...and Amol Rajan it is. Not a great fan, to be honest, but I assume he has something on someone senior at the BBC.

Amol Rajan is fine but I don't see the appeal myself.

Well he seems a much better choice than a lot of the names being batted about. Hopefully they make it much less Oxbridge centred along with the new host.

Moneybags on Channel 4 is very watchable with a good mix of questions. Some of them are quite tough.

He would have no influence I'm sure, but there have been complaints for years that far too many Oxbridge colleges are featured and it should be opened up to other institutions which offer degrees.

They have broadened the range of institutions involved over the years
And there are preliminary rounds which eliminate teams that never make it to the screen
Given the fact that Oxbridge colleges are building teams from a student body of 1000 give or take compared to whole universities who are pulling from much larger populations, the success of the colleges shows the quizzing strength in depth.
It may well be that of there were 1 Oxford team and 1 Cambridge team each season, they may well dominate and that could unbalance the competition.

Enjoyed watching the University Challenge documentary tonight. I did not know Jenny Ryan was on it 20 years ago likewise with Mark Labbett.

I'm quite jealous of the interesting mix of game shows that the UK offers. We are so lacking in the States. I'm glad YouTube and other sources can quench my thirst for Would I Lie to You and quirky offerings like Taskmaster or 8 out of 10 Cats Do Countdown.
