I absolutely loathe theatre in the round. There's always something you can't see properly no matter where you sit, or someone with their back to you. Very disappointing after waiting years for this to come over. With that and it being so out of the way, I'm actually wondering whether I'll even go, and if you'd asked me last week I'd have said I'd pay a fortune to see this show again.

A regional theatre in the US, Hale Centre Theatre, did a production of Newsies in the round and it looks quite good! (Link to the trailer) Blimey that's ambitious and impressive. In the round, a revolve and a stage that rises.

I’m so confused about why this would need to be in the round. Nothing about this show suggests it would benefit from that type of staging.

I’m so confused about why this would need to be in the round. Nothing about this show suggests it would benefit from that type of staging. You could apply that argument to any theatre layout, directorial or design approach. No offence to the Broadway production but I'm glad we are getting different take on it.

Oh, I’m always happy to see new takes on things and I’ll be buying tickets for this the day it goes on sale.

I’m so confused about why this would need to be in the round. Nothing about this show suggests it would benefit from that type of staging. Because it’s cheaper . Much less money to spend on set, and more space to fit extra seats in.

I can't decide if this flying thing sounds great or incredibly gimmicky. There is no point in the show where I can imagine flying being integrated without it feeling at odds with the content. But it's in their paragraph about the show so it doesn't seem like something they're likely to cut in previews if it doesn't work (like Raven flying in BooH). And I very much worry that it might not work. If I had read that the street wise, scrappy type kids in Newsies would be doing lots of balletic choreography, including numerous pirouettes and passe pirouettes, i had would have said that sounds weird and at odds with the content, and yet... If you're looking for a replica production of the Broadway show, you're not going to find it at the Troubadour in Wembley.

I'm not concerned about wanting to see a replica - I will take any iteration of Newsies I can get. Does street-wise NYC kids dancing really sound that odd? Seems like WSS should've disabused anyone of that notion. But if someone told me they were putting flying into WSS, I'd also think that was a weird idea. Flying tends to work better when there's a reason for people to be flying. Newsies just doesn't have one. I'm more than happy to be proven wrong, but I don't think there's anything wrong with being a little cautious of what feels like a potentially poor idea.

I'm picturing Jack Kelly soaring over the audience during 'Santa Fe', and there's no other moment in the show where it would be less ridiculous than that.

Brooklyn's Here... Just float the Brooklyn newsies down from the sky right into the centre of the stage

If someone had come out in '86 prior to Phantom's opening, saying they were going to fly the Phantom out into the audience during the show, people would have lauded that as laughable and inappropriate for the piece; and yet it's now one of the most missed elements of the show.
At the end of the day, this is Musical Theatre not Stanislavski; a slight suspension of belief is generally required with these kinda shows from the start.

I’m picturing a less literal idea of flying, more like ‘swinging’ out over the front few rows, and around the ‘structure’ if they are replicating the set idea off of Broadway. What did they do at The Paper Mill?

It was The Paper Mill production that went to Broadway, so they were the same, but this is in the round, so it cant have the same type of structures as that version. When I watched that production, the constantly moving structures just kept reminding me Martin Guerre at the Prince Edward.

I loved the set on Broadway - that one part at the end where the whole thing moves towards the audience is absolutely stunning in person. I was sitting toward the front of the mezz and couldn't have had a better seat. Got a backstage tour afterwards (which was fantastic) and the moving structure is the only bit I wasn't allowed on, for safety, which was fine of course but I did sort of want to climb it.

Yes and it’s amazing in the film version where you get the wide angle shot of it from the bottom of the stage!

One of my favourite moments and memories of it on Broadway and that with the music at the time it’s one of my favourite theatre tingle moments

i saw the show on broadway & watched the proshot in the cinema and i cannot for the life of me remember the set beyond some generic scaffolding.
it’s not a show that demands anything too specific in terms of production so i think something in the round sounds fine. i expect they’ll use the flying to just exaggerate the dancing - like some leaps that go further than usual & a pirouette that leads to take off etc.

Oh that's my fave bit of the show as well. Goosebumps. It's a shame we don't get the original version here but I'm sure that the new version will be good in it's own way also. I'm still excited to see it.

Maybe the ‘flying’ will assist in a bit of parkour around the tenements during the chase scenes?

Jac Yarrow was just on Instagram live and answering questions from people. He read out a question which was "are you going to do Newsies after Joseph" and he didn't answer! Read into that what you will.

Jac Yarrow for some reason makes me think of more a Davey than a Jack, but we'll just have to watch what happens...

When is this due to open? I'll likely book anyway but I'd really prefer a cast announcement first.
