It is surprisingly hard to find decent food in Stratford - the One Elm pub does an excellent veggie Sunday roast though. So disappointed to hear about the fish and chip shop - it always smells mouthwatering and I've been promising myself a blowout there! I ate there a million years ago with my sixth form class and it was what you expect. What amazes me is that it is on the hottest spot in the town and has been there for ages, so do they own the premises or is the rent cheap or do they make a fortune? Other eating places have changed frequently over the years. They seem to go on and on....

Bensons has closed as Bards Walk being redeveloped however moved to Henley Street opposite Birthplace. Can recommend HR cafe by Windsor Street coach & car park, the Four Teas In Sheep Street, Huffkins in Bridge Street.

DO NOT GO TO THE FISH SHOP OVER THE ROAD FROM THE RSC. Shocking service, mediocre fish, adequate chips, I wouldn't recommend it to anyone. If you want a cheap eat in Stratford, stick to the Wetherspoon's, but do yourself a favour and avoid that horrible fish shop. It used to be really good before it changed hands 5 or so years ago then fell off a cliff. I miss the Clanger shop which is now another tea room.

There are so many food outlets in Strarford the theatre had to come up with some thing good to compete. So they installed a too small uncomfortable and run of the mill sandwich and cakes you see everywhere in the ground floor foyer. Then they put the more expensive restaurant on the top, very nice, weak service and ok food. Good views. You have to book. Allow plenty of time before a show. Opposite the theatre is a Carluccio, again book and a fish and chip shop! As a foodie the only really good restaurant I've ever found in Stratford is Hussains, on Chapel Street. As for the rest, all is but toys. Adequate, but unexciting. So I've welcome the RSC's upgrade. No 9 Church Street is excellent whereas a curry before theatre always seems a courageous choice.

I've heard good things about No 9 Church St - is it the sort of place you can go in solo and feel comfortable? In general I've been surprised at how few places in Stratford seem to like solo diners; they look really grumpy about it and find the worst place to sit, even when the place is half empty - I once got put upstairs completely on my own which was quite uncomfortable!

True dat. Last two times I've been to Pizza Express in Stratford on my own they've put me on a table wedged between a coat rack and the door to the loos.
There's a great Moroccan cafe I've had lunch in a few times after it was recommended on the old forum - Mida I think it's called? Also the pub Encore just along from Carluccios does decent food

I always book a Cote brasserie whenever I go to the theatre (mostly London but have also been to the Chichester and Newbury branches) for a pre-theatre set menu. Great value, with lots of choice, for £13.95 for three courses. If you've asked for your Delfont Mackintosh tickets to be posted to you, they arrive in an envelope which entitles you and the rest of your party to a complimentaey kir royale. (Always book- they get very busy...)

Was at the NT drinking my tea on one of those roundy things with the table in the middle (no seats in the Kitchen or nearby!). Lifted my cup of tea and in the time it took me to take a sip a waiter had whipped my saucer away!

I remember when Miss Saigon was at Drury Lane for the original London run, they used to (I don't know if it was every day) put tables out in one of the bars and serve up an oriental buffet. I think it was only something like a tenner on top and it was served before the show.
And if I am in town for a matinee, I always go to Joe Allen's for dinner after. yum!

Now the Kitchen, in the National, the one next to the bookshop, their watermelon and feta salad is exquisite, as good a food than I have had anywhere.

I've heard good things about the quality of the food at the Kitchen, but extremely disappointing things about the quantity.

Does it though? 'Cos if I'm paying more than a couple of quid for something, I don't expect to be hungry again five minutes later. It sort of defeats one of the primary purposes of eating.

Big new Italian Food market has opened opposite Southwark Playhouse - apparently deli, bakery etc but also a food court doing drinks and hot food. Not sure of the opening hours, certainly looks like a good bet before a show.

I recall having the most delicious spaghetti with tomato sauce at Wyndham's Theatre once.
I must say though, while Carey Mulligan is NOT a sharer she is a very accurate shot with a frying pan.
Security there are very heavy handed. And not in a good way.

According to their twitter it is open 11am to 11pm, but currently is soft opening until September so guessing a few bits to finish off. I'm in the area tomorrow so will check it out and report back.

Ditto their gnocchi macaroni and cheese. Only if they manage not to overcook it! It was horrible when I had it. If it is brown on top, send it back. Never been impressed with the quality of food in the Kitchen.

Visited today. Can confirm their is some bloody delicious food on offer. There is like an Italian supermarket with fruit, dried pasta, sauces, wine etc, and the across a courtyard you have the covered food court. Had a delicious flat bread and ice cream, but hot pasta dishes, freshly made on site mozzarella selections and sandwiches were all available. They are constructing more stalls next door, so the selection should be growing soon. Worth a look in for sure.

I have never had the feta and watermelon salad overcooked.
Had It today and delicious and a bargain for £7, you can stick the other restaurants, where the sun doesn't belong.

Ooh, the Italian foodcourt sounds really good. Must try it, I really like Charing Cross theatre bar and restaurant - reasonable prices and doesn't taste too bad either. They even have a special Titanic menu based on an actual menu from the ship (except for the veggie options which have been adapted). Only 3 courses though (didn't they have about 12 in 1912). Also the musical is great!

So for those who have visited it, does the Italian Food Market have anywhere to sit, please? As it sounds great, but if it's another of those places which do takeaway only, or expect you to eat from a polystyrene tray with plastic cutlery while perched on a rickety bench (as at the food market just to the south of the Festival Hall), I'll stick with my d-i-y picnic habit.
