Well. Historical inaccuracies aside, I loved it! It's funny, entertaining and really rather touching.
The score is terrific and the deceptively simple staging is gorgeous, the projections are almost 3D, they're just so textured. The "death" of the Romanovs actually gave me goosebumps and 'Journey To The Past' when it moves from the cherry blossom to Paris is STUNNING. But not as stunning as the cast. Christy Altomore (gorgeous), Derek Klena (an absolute star) and John Bolton (hilarious) are a fabulous lead trio and their chemistry is terrific. Mary Beth Peil a wonderful Dowager Empress and Ronny Boogaloo looking FOXY as Gleb. He's starting to sound a little bit like Hugh Jackman but when he lets rip, that voice can blow you away. I mean, to be honest if he wanted to he can blo. . no too early for that.
And the costumes! It's like someone raided Elizabeth Taylor's jewellery box.
BUT if for nothing else, the show is worth seeing for John Bolton and Caroline O'Connor. Oh my. Talk about scene stealing. I'm not quite sure how many Russian Countesses were quite like Ethel Merman on a night out jacked up on one too many vodkas but it doesn't matter.
Oh and if the producers of the Broadway revival of 'My Fair Lady' are reading. Christy is your gal.
