Its official. Europe HATES us. Not as much as us, though. Just for the record: Would the referendum had been called off if you had won the Eurovision?

I think they need to split it up to reduce the effect of regional voting. There's clearly a problem with the voting when countries that routinely came in the top three now struggle to reach the middle. Remember there are two compounding factors on this: 1. Countries can now sing in any language they link - until the late 90s they had to sing in an official language of their nation. Therefore it's not a surprise Ireland and United Kingdom did so well during that era. As soon as everyone could, broadly, understand all the songs, the vague monopoly was disappearing. 2. The jury vote becoming 50% was introduced purely to avoid televoting becoming "vote for your friends" - and I genuinely think the jury votes, on the whole, had things much better than the televotes this year. Mind you, what our jury were smoking to give Georgia 12 points I have got no idea..

Its official. Europe HATES us. Europe must hate Germany even more then - bottom twice in succession now. I think UK are victims of their flippant (Woganesque) attitude to Eurovision. Other countries send their top artists (many of whom have multi nation fan bases), we send talent show cast offs and has beens. I'm sure Joe and Jake did their very best but the song hasn't even broken into the top 100. Maybe not a vintage year song-wise but what a show Sweden put on. Petra and Mans, great presenters, not afraid to make gentle mockery of their country's Eurovision obsession. And my favourite ever Eurovision song - Bosnia 2006 Lelja by Hari Mata Hari.

Its official. Europe HATES us. Mmm. But they don't hate us enough to stay away from our capital judging from the huge numbers on the streets, buses, tubes... Or our theatres. It's mostly European school groups keeping stuff like Thriller in the West End.

Petra and Mans, best hosts ever. They worked so well together and very funny. Loved the interval act last night making fun of Eurovision. We should bring them over here to do some TV and don't you think that Mans has got musical theatre potential?

Hard to believe that Mans was caught up in that news story about him being a 'homophobe' just before last years contest isn't it?

Its official. Europe HATES us. It's not that, it's about who you have connections to and the continent have much greater overlap between each other (especially countries which used to be part of another one). That won't stop the xenophobes believing that it is about 'hate' anyway, as it's the language they speak.... Nothing to do with music, of course, but Britain's efforts are usually woeful on that score too.

Well its clearly political as the Ukraine song was meant to be an anti Russian song and all the eastern block countries public votes gave the Ukraine the top marks and you cant tell me that it was because the song was good. It was dreary. And I cant agree about our efforts being woeful. The song was good (not the best) but if that song was done by 1D as a normal pop release it would be number 1 in the charts. We deserved a much higher ranking than we got.
Oh and my favourite ever Eurovision song Ding a Dong, by Teach In. BOM did a hilarious version of it at the last West End Eurovision (which you can find on youtube)

Its official. Europe HATES us. Not true. The UK seems to hate Europe. I've never met any European who hates the UK.

As it is, it hasn't exactly been a chart success. And of course the public voting is petty and point scoring, it's what passes as democracy nowadays.

The UK is second from last.... is that too late to make an impression or perfect place to be remembered?? I think we'll do the best we have in a long time. Yes, well predicted. The UK came second from last!

The highest British votes went to firstly Lithuania, then Poland. I wonder if both having large vibrant communities over here, wanted to demonstrate patriotic spirit for their own country, rather than quality of song?

The UK gave Poland it's highest mark last year, too. Though that might have been more to do with buxom milk churners during the performance...

I was a bit tipsy at a party so missed this thread haha, but I was so fuming that Australia didn't win. They easily had the best song of the entire night and the Ukraine song was actually crap. That woman couldn't even sing. Urgh.
But in terms of the way the voting is done now, very clever, makes it a lot more tense!

If Europeans hated us that much then they would stay away. Is that clear enough now? Yeah, Europeans don't hate the UK at all. But it seems like the UK hates Europe, and Europeans. Two months ago I was in London on a trip with my university. Multiple classmates of mine experienced people telling them to "f*** off back to Europe" and calling them "f***ing immigrants". I've been going to the UK for years and never experienced anything like this before. Mind you, I wasn't there when the comments were made so it's very well possible that some of my classmates were acting stupid (sorry for the swear words)

Every country has its share of racists and xenophobes. It's not a UK thing. True, I never intended to claim it was a UK thing. But based on the Eurovision results many British people seem think the rest of Europe hates them, while to me it seems that there's more British people who hate the rest of Europe than the other way around

One person here posted "Europe hates us" and you have a rather vague anecdote about college students being abused while in London which even you seem to doubt is genuine. We should be allowed to discuss and question our future in the EU (not Europe) without being accused of xenophobia I think.
