This ballet has been too long absent from their repertoire and with the current superb standards shown by the RB it's an absolute delight. The cast I saw included Yasmine Naghdi and Matthew Ball and what a great partnership they are developing. Naghdi is fast becoming my favourite female dancer (along with Francesca Hayward) and the handsome Ball is second only to Vadim Muntagirov amongst the chaps. Much as I love The Nutcracker I hope they more regularly programme this over the Christmas period since it's an ideal family ballet (the excellent Ashton Cinderella should also be considered.)
Delibes fabulous score was really well played by the orchestra - Tom Seligman actually made the players give a toss which is quite rare at the ballet!
My only slight criticism was the design. The costumes were lovely but Osbert Lancaster's designs are a bit dull and really show their age. The RB does have too much reverence for its 'heritage' designs. The Messel Sleeping Beauty is another case in point and I've never liked Georgiardis's efforts for the otherwise exemplary Macmillan R&J.
I've seen 3 Coppelia performances in the last few days (Naghdi/Ball, Magri/Corrales & Morera/Campbell) with one to go. I've really enjoyed all of them & I have no issue with the production designs, though I haven't seen any other productions of Coppelia to compare them to.
