Considering Bette was being paid $125K a week, it's hardly surprising that she said no on what they were able to offer her here. I still can't imagine Imelda being... funny? At least funny in the way that Dolly is meant to be. But hey, she's our great so she's the woman to do it. Obviously you’ve never seen Imelda on stage then- she always finds the humour in the roles she plays. She was the funniest Mamma Rose and Mrs Lovett I’ve ever seen.

Most of her early TV work was in sitcoms and she played Miss Adelaide to great acclaim. It's only really after Vera Drake that she was known more for drama roles.

Jodie Jacobs and Gemma Atkins in the mix too. So pleased I booked for this now. Really? What, where?

I mean I absolutely have seen Imelda on stage, in both those shows and more. I just can't imagine her being funny as Dolly is meant to be is what I'm saying... I didn't see Guys and Dolls or Into The Woods though, so maybe the evidence is there.
Super happy with the additions to the cast - Harry Heppel was a dream in Romantics Anonymous, although he is 20 years younger than Jenna Russell, who's casting makes less and less sense as time goes on! Clare and Tyrone will be delightful too! Great to see some Follies ensemble members in there too - I think it's gonna be great!

Ooo Emily Langham! She had a lovely voice when I saw her last year in WSS as Anybody's.

So thrilled for Jodie Jacobs, this could be her first west end gig since WWRY if I’m not mistaken? Such an underused, overlooked performer in my opinion!

I just don't see it happening. Even after this initial lockdown is over, the virus won't be gone, and looking at other countries who are starting to plan their emergence, things like theatre's will still be closed and anywhere where there will be masses of people. We will still be advised to keep a distance from other people, and there's a possibility of a second wave. I just don't see it opening on time.

I think we must brace ourselves for this not happening. There’s a high chance it won’t. It can’t just be pushed back as Imeldas schedule is fully booked for the next few years with tv work and it has to play the scheduled number of weeks or it cannot break even, let alone make any profit.
I don’t think there is much hope that the west end will open this side of summer.

Imelda is filming The Crown from 2021-23.. I’m worried it won’t happen at all if it doesn’t open this summer.

As suggestion, could this mounted without Imelda if she is unavailable and another credible ‘name’ is cast instead, or is this a production a case of no Imelda no production?

Yeah, for me I don't know what Imelda would do with Dolly. Perhaps I'm thinking too much about Streisand's portrayal and don't get me wrong, I loved Imelda in Gypsy and think she's one of our best but I think that there are definitely other actresses who might be more suited to this role. Nonetheless, it would be a huge pity to not see this open and I think with Dominic Cooke and Bill Deamer working together, this will definitely be a theatrical highlight.

Elaine Paige is the obvious replacement, surely?

Says someone who clearly never saw her in 'Anything Goes' or 'The Drowsy Chaperone'. What a thoroughly ungracious post.

Personally I'd be happy to see Samantha Spiro reprise the role, she was fabulous in the open air production. Would be happy with EP myself, not sure why such a nasty comment was made though - plenty of performers I'm not keen on but others like them so I stay quiet, would be a tad boring if we all liked the same people

Although I personally don't like the film version, when it was released Barbra Streisand was only 27. Let's just reflect on that for a moment; Barbra Streisand was 27, playing opposite 49 year old Walter Matthau.
Although it is, of course, all pretend, Andy Nyman turned 54 just a few days ago, Imelda Staunton is 64 and Elaine Paige is 72!

Well for my £120 ticket I want Imelda. If someone else does it I'll still go as never seen the show before but wouldn't pay that sort of money for anyone else.

Elaine Paige is the obvious replacement, surely? Haven’t people suffered enough this year?! She cannot do comedy and can only play grotesques. No way. Plus she can’t shift tickets like Imelda. I've certainly seen her being funny in the past. Imelda has turned into a grimacing gargoyle. I couldn't even watch Follies until after she'd been replaced. She would un-sell any show to me (and in retrospect, I realize she was the only thing I hated about Into the Woods at the Phoenix, when she wasn't nearly so well-known. Ian Bartholomew, on the other hand, was a delight). Josie Lawrence would be interesting and Dawn French could be incredible, but I was just thinking about people who might get cast rather than dream casting.

I actually had Ria Jones or Tracie Bennett in mind although I know neither are as big names as Imelda. EP is certainly good although it’s quite clear her voice isn’t quite what it once was. Still, no need for such harsh criticisms.

Think Josie Lawrence would be fabulous, possibly Tracie Bennett as she was brilliant as Mame although I'd prefer them simply to transfer Mame in as I'd love to see it again. Of course, this is all assumption and Imelda may well be able to fit new dates in around other projects

Think Tracie is big enough to sell enough tickets but not sure Ria is.
