Well no hints about casting on the Andrew Marr show. They talked more about ABBA and Brexit than Chess. Indeedio. Hilarious story about american producer talking about Ahbar😆😆

Surely they must have the cast in place by now. If I'd spent £150 on tickets, I would want to know who was in it..... [br Flipping right! There must be lots of us holding off booking til the announcement?

Princess Meghan Markel is going to play Florence between wedding rehearsals, with Kate Cambridge as Svetlana. Knew they were holding back for a reason .

^ Susie Boyle has always had a reputation for being unpredictable... Ask Simon.
(If I’d been there, I’d have stepped in for her. No fee. I just love that other line...)

Mildly odd at "Elaine Paige In Concert" yesterday when she sang "I Know Him So Well" - her part only... nobody putting in the other lyric. Strange. What do you mean? Do you mean Elaine sang the first verse, but the second verse was completely unsung/orchestra only? That’s very weird!

Second part done by Andy Panayi on the flute which is how it's been done for a while now - all male band doesn't really offer a Barbara Dickson!

Lovely scene in Corrie tonight: Tracy, singing along to the radio in the florist’s, is giving it full wellie to I Know Him So Well. Just when the second line comes in, and we think she’s about to do an Elaine (^), Mary enters and performs it beautifully, and both finish the song... Mary thinks they are just like EP and BD, although she is quick to claim the EP role for herself!

I’d be happy with that casting... I can think of far worse! (Norris as the Russian. Roy as the American. Marti Pellow as the arbiter. It’s all taking shape... ) (And as for Merano, it’s in. As long as we have Todd, Adam and Gary in lederhosen. )

Exactly. Every time she sang "Wasn't It Good" etc, you'd expect "Oh So Good" etc, and there was no vocal, just flute etc. It was half a song. Messy, IMHO. I love EP, but this has pissed me off in her live gigs for years. I refuse to go her recent shows after going to her supposed "farewell tour"!!!
On many of her tours she's sang both parts which have been vaguely preferable to a flute solo but still sounds poor. I can't believe she even did it this way for the filmed Albert Hall show that promised "special guests" - woulda been nice with Barbara Dickson or some other female luminary to perform with. Other tours she's had some anonymous backing singer mumble the lines along from the shadows!
The song only truly soars with the full interplay - y'know, what with it being written specifically as a duet.

I'd pay top price seats for that!!!!!!

Barbara Dickson often sang IKHSW on her own with her band and it worked fine, but with guys like the late Pete Zorn doing backing vocals you hardly noticed EP was missing.

I assume, @theatremonkey, that EP sung all the hits, including my personal favourite - Don't Cry For Me Alban Arena.

Each time I see that there is a new post in this thread I get excited and think that the cast has been announced! Any idea as to when the announcement will be?

Look I'm on Nobody's side and I don't want to start an Argument so here's The Deal: You and I will need to sort it out or it's the Endgame I guess.

Kennedy Centre has announced Chess for the spring with Raul Esparza as Freddie, Karen Olivo as Florence, Ramin Karimloo as Anatoly and Ruthie Ann Miles as Svetlana. Beat that London! And a new book.....

Shouldn't be that difficult. None of them are household names - none are known outside of Broadway except Ramin. The ENO will need to be batting higher than that, based on their previous shows.

Among the MT fans who would be interested in Chess all four are well known in the US - Olivo for In The Heights and West Side Story, Miles for The King And I (Tony Award) and At Long Last Love. Esparza, an established Broadway leading man (Company, Leap of Faith) and a TV regular, has done a number of things in Washington - Georges in Sunday in the Park and Charlie in Merrily among them. This is a very strong cast indeed.

I don't know if they were all involved but Esparza was workshoping the new book version a few months back in NY. It's a good job I'm unemployable, if I had a proper job I'd be making an irresponsible decision to fly to D.C for this.
