How is it 'live' if the soundtrack's been available all week?
Band and vocals clearly not live! Was last year's Sound of Music the same?
(Don't mind btw, imagine logistics impossible and would rather have a clear vocal).

Word on the street is, as expected, Jennifer and Kristin were the highlights! So no shock there!

I was a bit disappointed in that clip - poor diction, lots of shouting and she looks way too young and glamorous for the role.

(Don't mind btw, imagine logistics impossible and would rather have a clear vocal). Well I presume that it works the way any normal stage show works...they've got into a studio and recorded all the songs as an album, but when it came to the live show, they performed it all...well, live! Jennifer is certainly not miming in the clip above!!! Not seen it yet so obviously don't know for certain, but I imagine doing playback and miming over pre-recorded vocals just wouldn't work for a live take, and it certainly wouldn't go down well!

For those not in the UK, or don't want to wait- it seems they've officially posted the whole thing to youtube:
Edit- at least it seems the channel is legit- I mean it is the full show, but it's not the NBC channel :/

I think Ariana did well with the acting, it's just her singing voice that doesn't fit the role.

I just got through watching it - I thought it was really enjoyable! The actress playing Tracy was fab! I also loved Edna, Wilber, Amber, Velma, Seaweed...in fact, pretty much everyone! The only issue I really had was with Jennifer Hudson being too glam/slim for the role (in one of the songs, she sings about being big and blonde, when she's obviously slim). I also agree with the person who mentioned Ariana Grande - her voice seemed weak compared to the others (the duet with J-Hud at the end was a mistake, because that really showed the weakness of her voice up). Incidentally, I loved the nod to the original 1988 film Edna in the first scene:- {Spoiler - click to view} In the 'Good Morning Baltimore' scene, there's a pet shop called DIVINE PETS which has a pink flamingo as its logo.

I have just watched it too and agree, it was really enjoyable! Jennifer and Kristin, by a landslide, were the standouts, with both there solos stealing the show, along with Run and Tell That and You Can't Stop The Beat. The rest of the cast were great too, I was surprised how good Ariana was acting-wise and it was great to have the nods to the originals like the opening number and the cameos in Welcome to The 60's which I won't spoil but keep your eyes peeled, its a lovely moment. But this, along with Grease, is my favourite of the recent live musical airings so I'm happy.

I haven't watched this yet but listened to the Cast Recording on the way to work this morning. I wonder if Kristin has it written into her contracts that she has to belt her high note at least once otherwise won't do the job?
Jennifer's vocals are just insane on I know where I've been.
I'm looking forward to watching it at some point and forming my own opinions of this TV production. Didn't think Ariana sounded TOO bad on the recording but not as strong as others.

I watched an interview somewhere saying that they wrote the high notes in for Kristin because they know she can do it and it is kind of a signature thing for her, so they added it in her two solos for that reason.

I just LOVED it.
Hairspray is one of those musicals I just enjoy so much. The score is great, the characters are great, and its message is great (and very apt).
The stand out was obviously JHud singing I Know Where I've Been. Never did I think I'd hear someone top Sandra Marvin singing that. But boy she did. The song gained a new meaning, and she sang for her LIFE!
Chenoweth doing baton twirling might be the best TV moment ever. Her vocals were bananas.
In reply to Ariana - I liked her singing, but she wasn't ditzy enough for Penny - she's supposed to be thick! And I didn't get that...

My Tivo box is getting very confused as I want it to record Hairspray, Boe and Ball and Sheridan Smith all at the same time, and it's not having any of it. Bit like buses coming along at the same time.

Impressed with the cast and production so far but I just don't think Harvey, Ariana and Kristen are coming across well. I love Harvey in hairspray but this isn't his best. Kristen's version of Miss Baltimore crabs was terrible.

Yeah, actually not bad so far.
The whole 'look' is great, costumes, hair, sets, etc. I did notice one dead sound issue and one or two lighting issued where Tracey is not in the spotlight. And one or two (minor) camera wobbles
Was that Rosie O'Donnell as the coach at school? And Scott Whitman as Mr Pinky?
So good to see Harvey Fernstein in the role he originated on stage. And THAT voice!
Agree. I didn't like Kristen's version of Miss Baltimore crabs. Or the reprise. God, she's tiny isn't she?

I think Mr. Pinky was played by Sean Hayes from Will and Grace. I could be wrong though.

Really enjoying it so far. It has a different feel of the 2007 movie which I like and remind me a bit of the original movie. Ithink Harvey is purposely being a bit different as it seems like he is channelling Divine from the original. I also think Ariana is holding back a bit when she is singing which I can understand but she mumbles a bit when she is singing. Like do the cameo of Marisa and Riki and all the others Easter eggs like divine pet food with a light up pink flamingo outside.
