For this unfamiliar with the song, or indeed its staging, here is a (partial) clip of My Strongest Suit from AIDA on Broadway

'Another Pyramid'? 'Like Father, Like Son'? GOOD? ...some of 😂😂😂😂 I’d sit through them for ‘Not Me’, ‘A Step Too Far’, ‘Fortune Favours the Brave’, ‘My Strongest Suit’, ‘Dance of the Robe’, ‘Elaborate Lives’, ‘The Gods Love Nubia’...THE GODS LOVE NUBIA! Would be worth the ticket price alone. I think 'Easy As Life' and 'The Gods Love Nubia' are terrific. Some of the others are entertaining, which is not the same thing as good. The show, I'm afraid - I saw the tour in Toronto years ago - is a turd.

It’s BEYOND me also why this never ran on the West End / it ran on broadway for FIVE YEARS. I met a disney exec once and it was timing with Mary Poppins and running costs. In short. Money.

Maybe the lack of a West End Aida is why people over here barely remember that Elton John is a musical theatre composer (based on the many ‘But why is Rocketman a musical?!’ conversations I had last year) though The Lion King has been running continuously for 20 years! And Billy Elliot did 10 years in the West End.
If the pandemic had not upended everything and Aida had gone to the West End next year, that would have been 3 musicals composed by Elton John running in London, with the new Tammy Faye one, and 2 on Broadway, with the new Devil Wears Prada. For a little while at least, even if they didn’t all manage to stay open for long.

Was listening to the Elton John demo recordings this morning. I know there was the “all star” album, but Elton’s own recordings make a very good album on their own (I especially love the over acted spoken lines).

I love the score for this but overall it’s not a great musical. The original design was fabulous though. Cannot believe we still haven’t had any production of it though.

I remember when I go back to Australia (I wasn't living here at the time) I have to do a special order and when I received a phone call to collect it, all of the woman who worked in the store stood around and looked at it and (not knowing anything about the show) couldn't believe how beautiful it was.

Rumours circulating again about a London run. It’s due to open in Holland next year and a possible London run after that.

The upcoming Dutch tour will be a new production directed by Schele Williams, who was in the original Broadway production of Aida. The casting call specifically asked for people of colour from all cultural backgrounds, so I'm not sure if we'll be seeing a blonde Amneris in this updated version of the show.

Will this lose the effect of showing the distinction between the Nubians and the Egyptians if it all ends up being cast as a free-for-all, or will they still try and ensure the Nubians are played by black actors. And perhaps this time have the Egyptians played by South Asian/Eurasian actors?

Casting call includes Aida’s mother who wasn’t present in the original production so looks like there’s some interesting changes being made to the book

Thankfully this production will have a new book, written by Schele Williams and David Hwang. I thought the book in the Broadway production was a snoozefest. It only came alive in the songs, so i'm looking forward to seeing this new version.
Schele Williams writes: "when I recently made some discoveries about the history of its time period, the show broke open for me. It truly is the butterfly effect; subtle shifts have taken a story I love and turned it into an adventure I can’t wait for audiences to discover"
Because it was a Disney production, they didn't worry about historical accuracy much, and in light of what has happened in the world since 2000, they have gone back to look at it.

I'm sad it took so long for this to happen, as we won't get the trio of Rachel John, Cassidy Janson and Oliver Tompsett

Amneris’ songs have some real belt in them, so I do hope they don’t undercast it with an incapable name, likewise a drippy Rademes. Perhaps they could lure Andrew Polec back, or Tom Francis if ‘& Juliet’ is done by then? Either way I am very excited to see this, especially if they are tackling the limp book.

Ok everyone, as a Dutch theater visitor I mainly read along, but I would like to help dispel some rumors about the upcoming dutch production. First of all, there was only an audition call in December for the Dutch version. However, you can assume that the production will come, because you can already register for the pre-sale. Secondly, nothing has been confirmed at all let alone about a tour production. I personally very much doubt it will be a tour production. The Tour productions in the Netherlands are not nearly as big as you are used to in the UK. I really think it will either succeed Aladin in the circus theater in the hague or succeed Tina in the beatrix theater in Utrecht. And the latter option seems the most likely to me, Tina has not been doing well in terms of ticket sales for months. And on top of that, there is a constant shortage of replacement actors for different cast members in the event of illness or positive corona contamination. And that, on top of the poor ticket sales, has led to performances being canceled all the time. So it wouldn't surprise me if Tina quits this fall and AIDA replaces it. I can't imagine a tour production for such a big show. And secretly I hope not. Most tour productions in the Netherlands are really stripped-down productions and I can already hear the producer saying at disney that it is becoming much too expensive to tour with a Disney production. That time was once there, but unfortunately not anymore. But apart from that, this is all just speculation on my part. But nothing about the production it self has been confirmed yet except the auditions.

On Broadway, the way the song "Strongest Suite" was performed was simply brilliant! It then made the lyrics and the placement of the reprise all the more poignant!

Coliseum next summer?
Also I actually like Like Father Like Son, also don't mind Another Pyramid but it's probably my least favourite. It's one of the few cds I rarely skip a song
