My morning depends on what my shift is.
• Wake up 3.45am • Plug phone in to charge • Get up and put food in the oven (Usually fish fingers and either potato waffle or brown rice on the cooker top) • Make a coffee • Sit down and check the internet and catch up with what I missed going to bed at 8pm! • Around 4.20 eat food • 4.30/4.40 Have a shower wash hair • 5ish quickly try and get my hair up in a pony tail while its still pretty wet! • Have to be out the bathroom by 5.10 because my dad gets up and is in there 5.10 every day. • Make more coffee for my flask • 5.20 rush to get dressed • 5.30 Leg it out the door for the bus at 5.35
This is only when I work early morning (which is most of the time). If I have an 8am start I get up at 5 and follow the same routine but have sn extra 15 mins). If I don't work that day or its a late its - • Wake up and get a coffee • Charge phone and check internet. • Breakfast is toast some times egg and tomatoes on bread or beans on toast (if I am not going out at all) and toast with vegemite (if I am going out). Then the rest depends on if I go out and when.

To me the mornings are the best time of the day. Wake up about 5;00, download the paper and a bit of social media, 20/30 minutes of exercise around 5:30, shower, breakfast, a bit of chilling either listening to /playing music or some reading, and look to leave the flat around 7:30. Never been able to rush a morning, the silence and tranquility set up the day perfectly. That's very laudable. I don't like a rushed morning either but on work days I absolutely cannot do things like reading or music that I associate with relaxed leisure time as it feels wrong! But the routine you describe is great for non-work days except the downloaded paper and the start time. And the exercise. Usually.

The toasted contract was about 2 inches thick, both cats and flowers are thicker, so it seems to work. Also, e-tickets help cut down the dangers. Not incinerated anything recently, anyway. When I landed on this page, this is the post I saw first. With no context, you can imagine my bafflement. It reads like an exchange between two men in trilbys and trenchcoats in a park in a spy drama pastiche. Or a series of cryptic crossword clues.

So far, kimbahorel, I think you win the prizes for earliest start AND most 'unusual' breakfast!

So far, kimbahorel, I think you win the prizes for earliest start and most 'unusual' breakfast! I am intolerant to so much stuff that it is literally the only thing I can eat of a morning that takes the least amount of time. I used to have just tin tomatos on toast but I was getting really hungry about two hours into my shift and started to feel faint.

Around 4.20 eat food 4.30/4.40 Have a shower wash hair Gaaaaaaah! Eating then showering?! Fair enough it's part of your routine. For me it goes against the natural order of things. I suspect it might be a split similar to brush teeth before or after breakfast. (You didn't include that!) Eating in 10 minutes is a lesser, shorter 'gaah' but a gaah nonetheless.

But I always have a shower the lastest I can before leaving as it means I leave the cleanest I can be. If I eat after shower I have to wash my face and that again.

And excellent use of "and that" by the way, a phrase I'm very fond of.

I think I would die if I had to do either of those times! I find getting up at 6am bad enough, being someone whose natural sleeping hours are about midnight-10am.

My grammer and writing is terrible but I have no idea why I wrote 'and that' to be honest it's my face, hands and teeth 😂😂. I write how I speak and have a tendency to add and that to things that don't need it.

Life as an unskilled person - retail! Retail workers aren't unskilled. Having to deal with the general public on a daily basis with their demands and ludicrous entitlement. Thats a skill in its own right!

Don’t be modest about retail. For some reason it isn’t rated here in U.K. but in other countries it is. In Japan it is an art.

Thats a skill in its own right! This, tenfold. kimbahorel, don't you dare describe your work as unskilled! I did it a couple of times, many years ago and couldn't hack it - because I didn't have those skills.

I tried working in John Lewis in my gap year & quickly realised that I certainly do not have the skills to deal with the general public on a face to face basis. I now do jobs where I only have to deal with them by email, which is much easier. And you don't have to work late on Christmas Eve then come in early on Boxing Day for the sales.

Having to deal with the general public on a daily basis with their demands and ludicrous entitlement. I couldn't do it. Injustice freaks me out something chronic and the first time someone tried to pull an obvious scam I'd explode. I don't know how retail workers can just smile politely and let it go. (One of my favourite websites is Not Always Right, but when reading it I often have to take a break for quarter of an hour or so to calm down because I get so distressed at some of the stories. Managers who take the customers' side over their employees are a particular trigger.)

I worked a xmas period at Volume One books in Kingston. As per Marty Di Bergi, don't bother looking for it, it's not there anymore (the shop, that is - Kingston is still there).
I didn't experience anything too bad, I just didn't much like it. But one thing, quite minor and not especially upsetting, has stuck in my mind for some reason. A woman asked me if we stocked birthday cards. I explained that no, it was just xmas cards. She gave me a really sour look and said very reproachfully "people do have birthdays, you know" and walked off. If anything it amused me that anyone would choose to make such a simple exchange so negative for no reason.
Better at least than my colleague whose momentary look of baffled incomprehension was mistaken for stupidity by the person who'd just asked him for ping-pong balls and proceeded to enunciate "you know, small white plastic things you play table tennis with!" (To remind you, this was a book shop).

My routine is snooze alarm several times. Snooze a few times more. Check social media. Snooze again.
Realise I'm late. Loo, shower. Think about breakfast. Realise I haven't time for breakfast (how I envy those of you who have time for a relaxing cuppa before you leave).
Realise I need to leave NOW to get the train.
Check oven hobs aren't on (I have to do this religiously even if I know I've not used them. Just in case they have turned themselves on 🙈)
Check bathroom sink taps aren't on (I'm not bothered about checking any other taps and have never left them on and there's never been a flood so not sure what that's about).
Generally check the cooker again. Check the taps again...
This can go on for about a minute most days 🙈
Then half run half walk to station.

I have a radio / 2 Alarm clock that actually plugs into a wall. Can't be fiddling with phone alarms or the like. 1st alarm is set for 07.10 although I'll have been awake since 6am swearing at the dog padding about as the sun is up and she can't figure out why I'm not. Hit snooze for 10 mins 2nd alarm goes off at 07.15 Wait for the snooze, stealing another minute or two before I have to move. 07.25 Dog on the garden, BBC Breakfast on the telly while I "do" ablutions with an ear for how the Jubilee line is running and the weather. 10 minutes max on make-up, back to the bathroom (07.45) to wash hands and brush teeth and fart about with hair before giving it up as a bad job. 07.50 upstairs ransacking wardrobe in accordance with BBC Breakfast weather. 07.55 dog in - depending on it being a dog walker day I have to put the lead on her as she'll snap at the dog walker if they try (mare). That usually means she'll snap at me while I put the lead on. 08.00 out the door, 10 mins drive to where I park near the station, 8 min walk to the station from the car, there's an 08.20 comes out of the Wembley Park sidings empty so I get a lovely seat and arrive 5-10 minutes late at London Bridge. No coffee or breakfast (I'd rather fester in my bed). No checking online for anything.

Me too, and it's the very best way. And retail work teaches you so much - I way prefer it to office work, more variety to the day. I did have a customer take a swing at me once, but that was about the worst of it. It's an under-rated job for sure. It's totally under paid concidering the lowest paid people in the company are the one face to face with people. I have had to learn how to a lot of things I honestly see it a little like acting. I step into my shop and I am the character of Kim the SA. Its not that I am not genuine its just I need to seperate it from how I feel usually because its stressful. Also having to be happy when your not is the most draining aspect. I once had a customer in my first job (The Works) ask me where a book was. I said we had a selection of novels but might not have the author she wanted at the back of the store. She came back said something under her breath and then picked up a little metal ball out of a boules set and lobbed it at me.
