I once told the husband of a writer I know that I'd finally got a copy of his book in a 2 for 50p sale in the small charity warehouse at my local "tip". I was promptly told that said author wouldn't need to be privy to that info, might have "tipped" him over the edge, apparently. Such egos!

Just the fact that writing a book takes a ridiculous amount of time and effort, is read in a few hours and discarded. Some authors like myself can deal with that and don't mind, as we work mostly in online media and are used to churning out copy constantly. Others who write only books do feel it acutely. I don't think it is something to judge lightly, perhaps.

But remembered if it’s any good. Fair point. I never forget reading "Under a Bridge With Dick and Harry." It explained every word as it went along. (Boss Cat).

Thanks to duncan. Went by Fopp this afternoon and picked up a copy. Couldn't find a second book, so just went with the one for £3. Excellent for a hardback.
