Going on Tuesday - the last time I saw it was the closing performance of the original London production. Very much looking forward to it.

I’m there Wednesday night, first two show day since March 2020, seeing the Heathers matinee first. Never seen the original production either so can’t wait.

I hadn't realized tonight was reopening night, but I'm so glad I was there. Michael Ball spoke to the audience after a thunderous curtain call and opened with an emotional, "You don't know how much we needed to hear that!"
Marisha Wallace brought the house down with 'I Know Where I've Been', getting a standing ovation. And the little girl playing Little Inez has a fabulous voice.
All in all, a really enjoyable, uplifting evening.

There is no better feeling in the world than You Can't Stop The Beat.
There is no better version of Hairspray than this original production.
Couple of ropey supporting performances (Rita Simons essentially shouted all evening and Link was very....fine) but Lizzie Bea is a star, Marisha Wallace deservedly got a midshow standing ovation, and Michael Ball is having the time of his life and its glorious to see.
EVERYONE should see this - it's joy personified. I feel like I'm drunk on theatre for the first time in far too long!

In the 'You're Timeless to Me' duet with Michael Ball and Les Dennis, did you think some of the bit was unscripted and unexpected or is it a very well done routine? {Spoiler - click to view} Michael Ball was goofing around, putting Dennis' hands on his breasts and generally making Dennis struggle (and lose) trying to keep a straight face.

It's been exactly like that every since I first saw it in 2008. They're very good at it but it's not spontaneous I'm afraid!

I’ve seen a photo of the masking on the Coliseum stage for Hairspray. It looks lost and tiny on that stage.
How sad they didn’t use the full proscenium and added a huge border to the sides.
I feel it will be lost in this theatre no?

I feel it will be lost in this theatre no? I didn't think it looked lost - it was a good idea to mask some of the stage and not try and full that entire stage which is basically impossible. I thought it worked well - and if it is transferring to somewhere like the Savoy, it will work even better in there.

They're very good at it but it's not spontaneous I'm afraid! That's exactly what I was afraid of. They are VERY good at it! They over-egged the pudding a bit... {Spoiler - click to view} their first 'bit' looked spontaneous but the 'bump from behind' moment was played for laughs just a little too long and started looking stage-y.

Guessing with covid/ cost of getting guardians and chaperones its easier to cast a professional actress than have 3 alternates.

I believe it’s always been played by a younger actress rather than a child actor.

May I please ask a question about merchandise. Are they selling any and if so, what? Thanks There was a lot. Mugs, t shirts, tea towels, tote bag, and programme (which was £10! so I didn't buy one) there may have been more stuff but I was cheesed off there wasn't a small £5 programme so left in a huff!

The good thing about programmes getting that expensive is that it puts you off buying and wasting your money. I used to buy a programme to every show i saw, even if they were £10 like this, but decided that on my return to theatre after covid i'm not going to buy them any more. They really are a waste if you don't do anything with them, mine are just in big storage box under the bed and it almost brings be out in hives now to think how much that box of paper cost me over the years! It did feel a bit of a wrench not to buy one when i returned to the theatre the other week but if they are going to be £10 in places then I think that will help!

I hope that it finally pushes me to stop buying them - it's the one piece of merch I get from every show but I do need to stop 😂

Fun performance tonight, reminded me everything I love about theatre. Completely forgot about Covid !
This is a mixture of multiple Hairspray versions, but the set is the touring set.

Also, I was end of row stalls and some bits were restricted due to the new masking. Takes up quite a bit of the stage

A few points on previous pages, Inez is always a petite adult, and no professional production of the show has used any child performers to date. I am told the production uses the sets from the UK tour. Oh, and you guessed right, You're Timeless to Me is rehearsed. Sends the punters home happy that they saw a "mistake" to make their evening special and different from the rest. Painful if you have to watch it every. single. night.

That would explain why the new tour has them playing in front of a hanging bedsheet with a couple of projections… see tour thread here

This set is from the UK tour of the original production - so this set won't have been used since 2013. The current UK tour is a different (cheaper) production.

"this" to the above two posts, both are correct. I have a friend on the Hairspray tour and whilst they are very proud of their work on the show, it is a budget production.
