Saw this last week with Ivan de Freitas as Shakespeare. Based on that, can anybody explain Oliver Tompsett’s silly cockney accent on the recording please?

His mockney accent was definitely there when i saw it in November. But it was no worse than David Bedella's french accent...

Yeah I didn't really get why Shakespeare's a bit of a geezer and yet Anne Hathaway's terribly posh. I assumed it was his own accent. Is that not the case?

It's definitely not Oliver's normal accent 😀

Having not, to the best of my knowledge, seen Oliver in anything before, I too assumed that is his normal accent.
Even if that isn't the case, it does kinda make sense, to highlight that Shakespeare was from a much lower social class to Anne Hathaway.

Loved the show but question - is May trans, non binary, a woman played by a man or a gay character? The character sings I’m not a girl, not a woman...so it leads me to believe the character is non binary...
Thanks...

My interpretation was that the gender of the character simply just does not matter.

Which is pretty cool, I haven’t seen a story like that in a musical before!

Not a girl, not yet a woman would suggest trans woman though wouldn’t it? Either way, I thought that May was on a journey of sorts and was still trying to work it out for themselves. I liked how Anne Hathaway slapped Will down when he questions what’s going on with May, basically telling him to mind his own business. Got a big cheer in manc.

Saw this on Friday and really enjoyed it. Looked like a full house so I really hope it becomes a success as it deserves to! Lots of diversity with age in the audience too which was nice.

May is intended to be non binary, but the show had no consultation with anyone in the trans* community and is played by a cis man - which is why it's both unclear and often an offensive portrayal of a Non Binary person. It ruined the show for me.

It ruined the show for me. What a shame that your experience was spoiled. It’s such a fun show. Do we know for definite that the character is non binary? Where is that stated? And that Arun Blair-Mangat is a cis man? Genuine question, what does the * after trans designate?

Dangerous territory here. I’m reminded of the debate that stipulates only gay actors should play gay roles. Ridiculous suggestion. So no one gay can play a straight role by the same token?
The actor’s own gender and sexuality has NOTHING to do with the role they are playing.

It did leave me a bit baffled. If the character is non-binary why sing "Not a girl, not yet a woman" and also "I Kissed a Girl"

Personally I thought it was all left ambiguous on purpose to say it doesn't really matter what anyone is, so why anyone would take offence to any of it is beyond me.

It ruined the show for me. One of the lighting technicians on the original Manchester run was a transwoman and I believe she had feedback for the production.

Quite amazing that when given a free choice of shows for the WE,my teen daughter chose this rather than SIX or HAMILTON or anything else for her birthday treat. At her theatre school, this show has a massive following. So pleased that &Juliet has been one of the big successes of the year...it deserves to run and run😀

I saw the understudy Shakespeare, Francois and Romeo this week and WOW they all were amazing! I saw the original cast on opening night, but the understudies were just as good. It’s nice to see a fresh spin on each character. This has to be one of the most talented ensemble casts in the West End. I hope &Juliet has a great run - one of my favourite shows ever.

Indeed, thank you Sean . akh Regardless of what some shows may allow regarding recording and photos (I know &juliet have tweeted that it’s ok to take pics of the bows) , it’s not possible for the mods here to stay on top of all of the various arrangements for different shows. So we have a policy of no unofficial pics across the board, it’s a rule that everyone has become familiar with and it would be confusing to start having caveats. Thanks for your understanding. No worries just thought people might like to see. Thanks for letting me know.
