Well with just over a month(ish) to go until the announcement of the 2019/20 Royal Opera House Ballet/Opera season I am setting up a topic for speculation and conversation when the new season is announced.
As far as I am aware here are some productions I would expect to see (note I am merely speculating):
- Rigoletto (with Carlos Alvarez)
- La Boheme (with Igor Glovatenko)
- The Makropulos Case (with Karita Mattila)
- Werther (with Juan Diego Florez)
- An opera based for children? This started with Hansel and Gretel last year, but I've no idea what other operas could be "for children"?
- Parsifal (it's not been done in a while and the ROH tends to "cycle" the main Wagner operas. PLEASE BETTER CASTING THIS TIME!)
- The Magic Flute (it's not been here for a while)
Of course I could list things I'd like to see at the opera house but I've more chance seeing a blind elephant flying on a pig backwards before that is likely to happen!

Is the WERTHER definitely with Florez? It is perhaps my favourite opera, but I was hoping for a different tenor in the title role. Maybe Beczala or Kaufmann?

Yes, he said in an interview on Radio 3 that he would be doing the role. I agree certainly not perfect casting, but it could be split casting. Kaufmann did the role a few years ago, and Beczala doesn't appear to be well liked by the ROH casting people despite being one of the most gifted tenors alive.

It sounds like next year may be a fairly cheap one for me Royal Opera-wise. The only thing so far on the above list that I'd really want to see is Vec Makropulos, which I've never seen. I've never seen Parsifal either but the reviews of the current ROH production do not make me want to see it. On the list that Xanderl linked to I got excited about Agrippina for a few seconds then saw that it's Kosky. After The Nose he's on my "Directors to Avoid" list.

I've been happily avoiding it & intend to continue to do so! I'm not very keen on Carmen as a piece anyway.

Having now seen it countless times I think I'll give up on it altogether. I find it hard to pin point why it continues to disappoint. It clearly contains some fantastic music but I always think it drags on and I don't find the story very involving. Also, despite having a dramatic ending, the music is quite static and doesn't hype up the tension as in other, greater, operas.

Makropulos Case won't be until February 2021 I'm afraid. Provisionally 6 performances, 4th - 22nd February 2021. All cast now confirmed. Jenufa will be next year, in the same February slot.

At least we haven't had Jenufa for a while. Any news on casting?

As I haven't got round to seeing Vec Makropulos in 15 years of operagoing I'm sure waiting 1 year more won't make that much difference (unless I get run over by a bus or suchlike in the interim).

Since there's been no Rossini for a few years, one of his is bound to pop up
Il Barbiere or Tell Maybe ?

Great news. This was the first ever Janacek opera a saw live but I struck lucky seeing Elisabeth Soderstrom in the title role with WNO.

I believe Don Pasquale with Bryn Terfel is also due in the next season as well as Don Giovanni with Daniel Behle.

My ballet wish list is the same as it is every year:
• Cinderella instead of the Nutcracker at Christmas. Please, Kevin O’Hare, please please please please. It’s been so long.
And this year I’m adding: • Onegin. So Thiago Soares can have one last run of it as his career winds down now he’s stepping back from being a principal. • Symphonic Variations • Les Patineurs. It was a beautiful Christmas alternative this year!

I agree ctas it has been such a long time since the ballet did Cinderella which is such a magical production.

Not exactly the same thing... The ENB are doing the Wheeldon production, which I enjoyed when I saw the Dutch ballet but it’s not the Ashton. Which I desperately want back in the ROH!

May I just drop in a tonyloco anecdote about Ashton's Cinderella that I saw a number of times when I was a 'regular' at the Royal Ballet back in the 1960s. It was of course one of Fonteyn's great roles and she was never less than superb in it, but at those performances when Ashton and Helpmann danced the Ugly Sisters, Margot was always very aware of who the audience had come to see and although it would be wrong to say that she coasted through her own performance, one could always sense that on the nights when Ashton and Helpmann were not on, Margot knew that she was the true star of the show, and so she gave just that little bit extra. The balances in the climactic pas de deux were held just that tiny bit longer and there was a full portion of the unique Fonteyn magic throughout every step she danced. You really couldn't fault what she did on an Ashton Helpmann night, but, my goodness, you certainly got the full A+ show when she alone was the star!

I agree that they should bring back Ashton's Cinderella to ROH. This practice of always giving us The Nutcracker was not the case 10 - 20 years ago. I do love their Nutcracker, and it's one of the few examples of the work of that excellent set designer Julia Trevelyan Oman left in The Garden's revivals now that we have a new Boheme. Another beautiful design she did was for Eugene Onegin (opera) in the Solti era. The only other example of her work still being revived is the wonderful 'A Month in the Country' - another Ashton classic. But it would be great to ring the changes around Christmas. One thing they did present a few times at Christmas was Ashton's 'Tales Of Beatrix Potter.' * This ought to have been a winner but after the first five minutes of delight at the wonderful costumes was boring as hell, the costumes preventing any interesting choreography (or much movement at all) with a stultifying score arranged by John Lanchbery. The whole thing lasted around an hour but felt much longer.
*Always as a double bill, often with the vastly superior 'Les Patineurs,' or 'The Dream.'
