What’s the deal with the Robbins choreography? Does it generally have to be used like with West Side Story ? A recent broadway production used hofesh shechter as the dance man. Now that I would of loved to have seen A BroadwayWorld interview with Shechter said, "Choreographer Hofesh Shechter admits to not quite understanding his instructions when Fiddler on the Roof director Bartlett Sher told him, 'You have to base it on the Jerome Robbins choreography, but you're free to do whatever you want.'" The Yiddish-language "Fiddler," currently at New York's Museum of Jewish Heritage and due to transfer to off-Broadway in February, has a credited choreographer, Staś Kmieć, but one who's billed on the museum's website as a "'Fiddler on the Roof' alumnus and historian." His staging of the musical numbers seemed to me to be very close to Robbins, including a (quite impressive) bottle dance, but I wouldn't be surprised if it was slightly modified for the relatively small stage and for the abilities of the ensemble, who put on a great show but don't all seem to have Broadway-level dance training.

Louise Gold is the weak link and for a role that’s the comic relief, he line readings fall flat. I’m sure she’s a lovely person, but...
That said, loved it and it def deserves a transfer.

I am amazed there are so few posts about this show. I am there on 5th Jan matinee, before the final performance of 42nd St, and keep looking to see comments, but very few. Still, looking forward to this as the original at Her Majesty's was a major factor in my love of musicals.

Reading the thread from beginning there was not a lot of interest and also being such a small theatre not that many people able to see it. Of course it's all sold out now so no chance of seeing it unless it transfers. I enjoyed it especially as I'd never seen it on the stage before.

I agree. I absolutely adored it. I thought Act I was stronger and had the better material than Act II - but the drama really picks up in the second half. The staging was fantastic, and Andy Nyman had us under his spell. I would see it in a heartbeat if it transfers.

I got my tickets fast for my trip in January. I'm also thrilled that in NYC there's a revival of Fiddler in yiddish. It's moving to a large theatre in February and I'll see it then.
When I was at Menier for Funny Girl I showed up 2 hours before the show with one person in front of me and we both got front row seats. So close I could have hugged the cast at the end. I wanted too.
THE SHOW IS NOT SOLD OUT as of post. You can get a pair January 2 at 8pm. Or singles tonight, Saturday or Sunday Nights.

I loved this
But it’s quite oppressive and depressing
I also Preferred the first half to the second
And the 20:00 start is so unnecessary
London Bridge isn’t that far away
I don’t get their late start time
19:45 would be a reasonable compromise

But do agree especially when Mr Nunn is involved as you never get out before 11pm. Not good on a school night when you have to be up at 5.30am

Understudy on for Andy Nyman at matinee today. Put in a good performance although I’ve nothing to compare it to aside from Topol who I saw when I was about 8 but remember nothing about the show. Hoping they will add their customary mid week matineee late in the run so I can go again.

Saw this tonight and can only echo what everyone else said about it being an excellent production.
And I only got my ticket yesterday, so they do appear.
The interval isn’t until 9:40pm and it’s testament to the strength of the show that it doesn’t feel that long at all.
Andy Nyman is excellent too and has been hiding his talents away for too long.
Deserving of a transfer.

I saw this right at the end of December, and it was honestly one of the theatrical highlights of the year for me (alongside Company).
Andy Nyman is just phenomenal (as expected). I booked as soon as he was announced, he is a wonderful actor and such a lovely guy.
The cast were so spot on. In such an intimate setting its amazing to see their detailed expressions and reactions, and hear the ad libs especially in the busier scenes.
I was a bit annoyed by the constant door slamming and I wasn't a big fan of the lighting design, but everything else was practically perfect.

It's interesting to see the website now says: "Fiddler on the Roof is now SOLD OUT. To be kept informed of any additional performances or a transfer..." then goes on to list a link. It's exciting news if it does transfer, especially as one of our fellow members did say it was expected to transfer to the Playhouse Theatre!

Well, this is outstanding, isn't it?
I saw the actor-musician production, led by Paul Michael Glaser, a few times on tour and thought that was a defining production so I wasn't sure how ready I was for another. I needn't have worried because I absolutely adored this.
From the moment you walk into the dark, smoky auditorium at the Menier, the wooden slats and gable-roofed shacks of the set bring Anatevka to life with a terrific authenticity. The lighting only adds to the set in evoking the atmosphere of early 20th century Russia.
It's impossible to see how the central performances of Andy Nyman as Tevye alongside Molly Osborne, Harriet Bunton and Kirsty Maclaren as his daughters Tzeitel, Hodel and Chava respectively could be bettered.
Harriet's Far From The Home I Love gave me chills while I don't think I was alone in fighting back tears during the heartbreaking scenes between Kirsty's Chava and Andy Nyman's Tevye towards the end. Great to see Kirsty on stage again after enjoying her performance so much in Our Ladies of Perpetual Succour.
As sublime as the daughters' performances are, it's of course on Tevye's shoulders that so much rests, and Andy Nyman presents his character's struggles and conflict between tradition and a desire to fulfil his daughters' happiness with remarkable sincerity, dry wit and warmth. Everything that was wrong with Marcus Brigstocke's casting as Barnum is spot on here.
The staging of the wedding, the Bottle Dance and Tevye's dream are quite extraordinary in their vibrancy as the cast fill every inch of the stage. The immediate standing ovation at the finale was testament to how this is a Fiddler not merely on the roof but positively raising it.
In the Menier's finest Tradition, surely this must transfer?
Five stars.

Isn’t 9 to 5 a limited run though? It's only a filler show to get a long runners in there. I seriously doubt it will be Fiddler, especially considering the size of the show.

Gielgud's free 30th March, Playhouse 6th April, Duke of York's 13th April. Next one after that isn't until 11th May when the Noel Coward becomes free.
I wonder when Delfont Mackintosh will announce restoration dates for the Gielgud and Noel Coward?
