There was indeed controversy when Molina played Teyve. Has no one heard Forbidden Broadway's Fiddler With No Jew? After Sheridan Smith in Funny Girl, the world does not need a Fiddler with no Jewish leading man. Let's all stop being a bunch of Scarlet Johansson and cast consciously. Yes cast consciously of course, but also cast the the best actor for the role.

Harvey Fierstein took over from Molina in that New York production and was the least convincing father of teenage girls I've ever seen on stage...... I fled at the interval, bored beyond all measure. Saw the most recent revival with Danny Burstein and really loved it. Fully expect the Menier to cast Marcus Brigstocke and Lara Pitt Pulford again. Harvey Fierstein As Tevye? Oy Vey, that must have been really ‘unique’. Going on previous Menier casting, we may see one or all three Strallens as Tevye’s daughters( or Clare Foster perhaps as Tzeitel) Maureen Lipman as Fruma Sarah, Jenna Russell as a Golde, Damien Humbley as Motel and in his debut stage role, David Babani As Tevye.

Thinking about it, it’s a shame that neither Paul Kaye or Simon Lipkin are old enough to play Tevye. I think both of them could master that role brilliantly if they were closer to the right age.

What about Andy Nyman? He was in Assassins at the Menier so he's worked for them before.

How old do you think Tevye is? He is not an old man. He likely was married to Golde between the ages of 18-21. We know he's been married for 25 years midway through Act Two - but by that point Tzeitel has been married and has had a baby - so when the show starts, Tevye likely is between 40-43. Paul Kaye is 53. Simon Lipkin is 32. Topol was 36 when he was in the film version.

Perhaps that’s because Topol has played the role at so many different stages in his life. Simon still looks very young to me, but maybe Paul could be a good choice. He did a cracking version of Fagin’s ‘I’m reviewing the situation’ on a TV show about Klezmer music. It’s been a while since he did Matilda, so maybe this could be the right time for him to do another musical? I’ve seen enough versions of FOTR to last me a lifetime, but if he was in it, I’d book a ticket in a heartbeat.

I love Molina but I don't associate him with musicals and you can clearly tell this was a "He kinda looks exotic, doesn't he" casting.

I would sell limbs to see Mandy Patinkin in ANYTHING.
(I'd be willing to sell a minor organ or two to not see Sher in anything else ever again.)

There are at least four Strallen sisters, so we're only one short for the show as it is.

Christopher Biggins as Tevye, Bonnie as Golde, and all Strallen sisters as the daughters.

There was a considerable controversy in New York when Molina played Tevye. And, unsurprisingly, he was extremely good in the part - though no one seemed to care about that.
Well apologies, I stand corrected then. I hadn’t heard about that. I’m Jewish and personally I disagree that the part MUST be played by a Jewish actor. My opinion is that casting should purely be dependent on the best person for the part. I don't recall anyone raising the smallest eyebrow over the Chichester casting. I don't think it would occur to anyone to ask. Britain is not America.

I don't recall anyone raising an eyebrow, either, at the casting at the Everyman last year - the show was performed by their repertory company, and had a multicultural cast, and it was glorious. But it wouldn't be as nice as a summer in Ohio With a gay midget named Karl, playing Tevye and Porgy.

He was referring to the comment about the Chuckle Brothers.

I'm hoping the staging is a bit more imaginative than end on. to be honest with the big numbers it will probably work better in the round like Barnum

I mean, on the one hand, it does immediately sound a bit like "oh no, they're casting a comedian instead of a musical theatre performer again", but Andy Nyman has already performed in a musical - at the Menier - so absolutely worth a shot.
