I've seen Alexandra in Sister Act, The Bodyguard and Joseph, and always enjoyed her. Not the greatest actress in the world, sure, and not in Beverley's league (but who is?!). But the negativity on here surprises me.

Agreed, I like her and thoroughly enjoyed her performance in the Palladium panto.

I saw this last night in Nottingham. Whilst it was a long time ago, I do remember really enjoying it at the Palladium. Like many others have said, I didn't rate the last tour nor Alexandra Burke and was disappointed.
I really wanted to love it, but I think it's three stars from me. I do still love some of the songs. I like Sandra Martin, she was good but she didn't blow me away. I don't know if her voice is tired but there were quite a few notes missed. Lesley Josephs was fine. Lizzie Bea stole the show for me and whilst initially I thought Clive Rowe was an odd choice, thought he was excellent.
Overall I just thought the whole thing lacked something. Even the big numbers with all the nuns lacked a bit of energy, though I did think excellent and individual characterisations for each nun. Not sure if any were off, there were 9 nuns (in addition to Deloris and Mother Superior) whereas I think 12 in the photo in the programme from the Manchester run. I am still not over "How I Got the Calling" being replaced by a much poorer number!
It may be they've always been there, but I thought some of the jokes were a bit pantomimey.
The audience seemed to love it however so perhaps it just wasn't for me. It was also one of the worst behaved audiences I've seen for a long time (which I'll add to the bad behaviour thread).
After seeing Beverley Knight blow the roof off at Sylvia I was tempted to book for the Dominion run, but I don't think I will now.

Having booked this way back in 2020 just before 'rona made an appearance, it was a really nice tonic watching this in Liverpool last night after seeing the harrowing "A Little Life" in London the previous afternoon. Ok, the set what little there was wasn't that great and really did highlight how big the Empire stage is when you only have a single desk in the middle of the stage. Though what made up for this is the cast. There was definitely a lot of love for this show from last night's audience. Sandra Marvin as DVC was enjoyable to watch and listen to and LJ was good fun as Mother Superior. For me it was Clive Rowe as Eddie and Lizzie Bea as Mary Roberts who stood out. Clive's rendition of "I Could Be That Guy" was brilliant and Lizzie singing were the particular high point of the show. Also, a big shout out to MD Neil McDonald on acting duties as well as his MD role. A fun end to the show.
Great energy levels from all the cast who certainly raised plenty of laughs during the show. A really fun show and a fantastic audience to be part of.

Does anyone remember if Beverly had a regular day off in the previous run of Sister Act? Or did it vary from week to week?

Does anyone know who is Deloris on the next leg of the tour? I notice Lesley Joseph is still Mother Superior but Sandra Marvin seems to have finished with the role.

Beverley is pretty good at making sure any scheduled absences are on the show or venue’s website - that was certainly the case when she did this last year, and Drifter’s Girl and Sylvia. Of course any diary clashes or holiday dates are unlikely to be confirmed and posted until nearer the time so it doesn’t help if booking far in advance. Outside of holiday dates she does usually do all 8 shows a week though.

Just thought I'd jot down a quick review as no one else has from the new tour yet. At fairly high ticket prices for Coventry, this was sold out on a Tuesday night which is very good going and nice to see for a tour.
I saw the original production in London and I have to say, this cast stands up against it very well indeed. Lesley Joseph wasn't on, but I wouldn't have known the cover wasn't cast in the role. Landi Oshinowo is playing Deloris and was absolutely wonderful and sang really well. The staging is fairly minimal but works. Lizzie Bea almost stole the night with her big number and was really convincing in general.
It's nice to see a tour cast giving their all and the whole thing not seeming a bit tired, and I'd forgotten just what a joyful piece of theatre this is. There have been a few changes since London, which I'm sure have been discussed on this thread before so I won't dwell on them, but the new/changed song and changed lyrics worked well. Although you do kind of wish every song was given to Deloris and/or the nuns - and they clearly had to to work hard with the staging of the songs for the men to help them compete.
So if this is coming near you, I'd really recommend checking it out. A really good nice in the theatre.

Does anyone know if Lizzie Bea is staying on the UK tour after Dec as she does not seem to be in Cast lists for shows in 2024 on tour.
So its got me thinking that she may be moving to the London Cast for 2024 which if is the case would be great.
Any other Lizzie fans out there?

Considering I really didn’t feel like going this afternoon, I ended up really enjoying. The production is threadbare but the cast really really sold it. Landi is really good as Deloris too!

Well after all Lizzie is joining the London Cast from March.
So happy for her as she started in the London then went out on tour then back to London.
So my plan for this year is seeing it in Manchester in March then the next day in London.
would be good if they could extend the London run but they would have to move to another theatre as the Elton john musical is moving in a couple of weeks after Sister act ends.

I haven't seen Sister Act since the original previews at the Palladium and I haven't really kept up with all the tours since. If I go to see the new production in the West End is it likely to be comparable in terms of production values, or is it a more basic touring set etc?

You should treat yourself as it is a whole new (and much improved) show since it's Palladium premiere. This version is in many ways identical to the Broadway version (which bore only scant similarity to that Palladium production) and set-wise, will likely be similar to the one used for the Hammersmith Eventim Apollo a couple of years back. And Beverly really brings it. She is a very good actress who sings the daylights out of the score.

Thanks, I do have fond memories of that original production (with Patina Miller) so I've always been hesitant to see anything that might be sub-par, but it sounds like this is decent and I am impressed by the cast they have gathered.

Oh I think the new version is not a patch on the Palladium version!
Don't like many of the changes to the score (Haven't Got A Prayer might be fine when there's a person doing it who can sing though) and I miss How I Got The Calling (It's Good To Be A Nun just isn't as good)
Bev absolutely sings the living heck out of the score though, so I'll definitely be going again (and hoping that there's a bit more set this time, as there was a LOT of stage masking at the Apollo, which for 7 weeks I guess is fine, but for 6 months I'd hope Jamie Wilson might chuck a bit of cash at it...)

Clues online point to Beverley Callard joining the tour as Mother Superior. I think they point to Wendi Peters more actually. She plays a GP in Doctors. I don't think Callard has played a GP.

Would Wendi be the first ever 'celeb' Mother Superior in Sister Act that can actually SING?

Does anyone know why “How I Got the Calling” was replaced? In general, consensus is that the replacement song is much weaker, and even if not I’d say its biggest flaw is that it doesn’t set up Sister Mary Robert’s story at all, which really robs her of a full rounded journey in my opinion. Usually, I can understand reasoning why songs are replaced, but this one has baffled me since I saw it on Hammersmith so many years after enjoying the original production.

Yes I've thought the same since the first ever UK Tour which (I think) is where it first appeared in the UK. I don't think it was ever slipped in for London - was it added in for Broadway?

Saw the show last night in Dublin! Third time seeing this production and I think it’s probably five stars for me. Landi Oshinowo was fantastic as Deloris and Ruth Jones was brilliant as Mother Superior. I was actually quite surprised with her singing and thought she had a lovely voice. Her rendition of Here Within These Walls was really good and thought her rendition of I Haven’t Got a Prayer was hilarious. The rest of the cast was great too and the standing ovation at the end was much deserved.
