Hey everyone! After learning about this forum from the "microwave girl"s video, I read a few pages, and now I can proudly(?) say that I've read all 620 pages of this thread. Any family sized nutella, scooters or microwaves for me?

Saw this for the first time in quite a few years last night. Laura Pick was on as Elphaba and she has the cleanest, healthiest sounding belt you'll hear. Nothing too riffy but hit all the money notes with ease - I was pretty impressed. I liked her energy and approach to the character (I also think she's got a bump! So pretty sure she won't be taking over as had been mooted on here). For me, Sophie Evans was probably the standout though, with a gorgeous tone and a really fresh interpretation that was genuinely funny in places. She goes from head to chest and high sop to belt effortlessly. I don't understand the people who say she's been miscast - why? I know opinions and all, but thought she fitted it like a glove, so would be intrigued to hear reasons. They both had great chemistry and alongside some really healthy-sounding vocals carried the show wonderfully well.
Andy Hockley was by far the best Wizard I've seen, he sang it really well and was very likeable. Melanie La Barrie's Morrible was fab too... people round me in the auditorium actually blocked their ears at certain points when she lets rip, which made me chuckle. The other principals were perfectly serviceable and I mean that in the best way.
David Witts though. Dancing Through Life was an out of body experience, and his vocals were all over the shop. Not for me.

Actually, there's a comprehensive section on fifth cover midwife! I know this is all a big joke but, the Broadway production actually has THREE midwife covers. Midwife Covers (Scroll down to the understudy section.)

How interesting that they have all joined at different times. Do they not have full cast changes over there like they have here? I didn't realise it was so different From that it looks like a constant revolving door. That must be hard to rehearse etc.

Yes my understanding is they’re all on different contracts so you could have a different person in rehearsal each week. That’s why there’s not so much of an announcement like we get over here where it’s a full cast change.
The other strange thing is how they manage illness, of a lead is off for more than a few weeks they’ll bring in a replacement rather than have the U/S in for long periods. So glad we don’t have that approach as we get to see the talent in the U/S and swings.

AEA has a rule where the understudy is automatically bumped up to lead if they perform the rule continuously for three weeks. So, if the lead has to be out for more then three weeks it is easier for the producers to put an Alumni in for a short term then recasting an ensemble role.

Their contracts over there are very odd, I did a dance workshop with the Broadway cast and Lindsay K Northern did a talk with us about being Glinda understudy and that was 12 years ago!!!!!!!!!!! and she is still Glinda understudy now!

Maria has her last scheduled show today then leaves on the 13th of April, presumably that means we must be getting a new Glinda standby fairly soon as I can't imagine Carina will be coming back?

I think it'll be one of the tour girls, e.g. Charlie Baptie/Grace Chapman.

Why is everyone saying Carina won’t be back, or welcomed back? This scenario happens all the time and at the end of the day as far as we know Carina is still contracted with Wicked and will be returning.
Because she can’t appear as Glinda doesn’t mean she can’t come back, the only way she wouldn’t come back is if Carina herself has decided not too. If that was the case chances are Maria would be staying on unless she already has something else lined up.
I don’t see anyone joining Wicked as a new Glinda standby, more than likely they’ll have Sam & Rosa perform the role until Carina re-starts her maternity leave.

Why is everyone saying Carina won’t be back, or welcomed back? We mean (at least I do) in terms of she won’t be back performing as Glinda until after she’s given birth. Two months is a fair while to go without a Glinda standby. It’s possible that they’ll just have the understudies cover the role until the June but personally I see them bringing in an ex Glinda just until cast change, be it an ex tour or London cast member.

The understudies covering causes other problems though and old Nessa covers having to come back and standby that role.
I could see them asking Charli or one of the old Glindi in for for a few months and start with a new Standby starting with the rest of the new contracted people at the end of July.
Or (perhaps more likely) Carina technically coming back for a few months as she would need to be at work again for a certain time before going off again on maternity leave.

I don’t think it’ll be Helen Woolf. I think she’d only come back if she got offered lead Glinda in London.

Is Lucie Jones after a role in Wicked here or in Broadway? I heard she is after a role in it and not Waitress - despite being in the Broadway press photos! She's at The Two Brewers in Clapham on Friday - if I get a chance I'll ask her!

Well that depressing, so I was 17 when she first started, which means I am now 21 + 5 years tax. (I actually had to work out what age I was to figure that out, been telling people I’m only 21 for the last 5 years, to the point I knew it was wrong but didn’t know my actual age)

It’s actually a day late, their first show was 29/3/10. Still ridiculously long/quick though!

Who remembers Louise painting "get a grip" on her nails on their last show together?
They had such a great chemistry.

My first West End (and Wicked) experience was with Rachel and Louise and I had no idea at that time how precious that experience would be. It was only after I saw the show with other people that I got it. Their chemistry and talent was unbelievable. I haven't seen or heard anyone fitting these roles as well as they did.

There’s suspicions that Charli Baptie (U/S Glinda on the UK/Ireland tour) is going to play Glinda in London? One of the girls from the wig department posted a video of her doing wigs - One was the shiz hair, and the other was an updo. The both had Charli’s name on and Glinda underneath. She did another wig but this time I couldn’t see what wig it was, though I did see Charli. It’s relatively recent, given the fact that Laura Pick (current S/B Elphaba) makes an appearance, and the wiggle also works on Jennie & Aimee’s ensemble wigs?! Anyone know if this is true or not?!

Maria has a new job which means she can't play Glinda anymore, and while Carina is likely doing something in the building so she can get a second maternity leave. It won't be standing by for Glinda because she's pregnant. Therefore it probably makes sense Charli Baptie is taking the place of Maria as "Standby for Glinda (Maternity Cover)". Makes sense she had over 70 shows as Glinda on tour, will need minimal rehearsal time (slight staging changes and getting it back in her head after 3 months) and her costumes and wigs are still very accessible.

Charli could well be joining London (and I hope she is ... she’s amazing!) but this could be in any role.
Around 2 and a half months before rehearsals are due to start I’m assuming a large part of the new cast has been decided, so the wigs could be prepared for Charli in any role, or another cast member using the same wigs?
I still don’t believe that someone is replacing Maria at this point, the only reason I see this happening is if Carina has decided she isn’t returning or will leave in July and won’t come back, however with past occasions where cast have left early, or in the case of Carina’s last pregnancy they will just use understudies.
If Carina does return and can’t standby for Glinda would they really pay someone else to do that role as well as paying Carina? They didn’t even replace Natalie Andreou and Sarah McNicholas when they were gone for months at a time.

They can't terminate Carina's contract due to her pregnancy, so if she's chosen to take another year to be on paid maternity leave (Which I would if I was her) then they need a replacement. Carina is pregnant and can't play Glinda (they're very fussy, if you know you're pregnant you're probably too pregnant for Glinda) and Maria is in rehearsals for a new job starting in 3 weeks. Also Kane Oliver Parry (now works in Sound at Wicked), left a comment on the offending Instagram video saying "So it's been announced she's standing by then".
So say hello to our new Standby for Glinda, Charli Baptie. I can only pray she grows on me a bit more than she did on tour. So much potential that just didn't work for me.
Edit: It's likely Carina will act as 3rd Cover/Standby Nessarose like she did during her first pregnancy, to fill the three months she needs to be at work. I know they're not having an issue with Nessaroses anymore but she needs to be there and Nessarose is her other option.
