You may not get chills Burly, but the rest of us do Maybe one day a sheet of black fabric and a wind machine will do the same for me Actually this opens the discussion up about the number and standard of special effects generally in Wicked. To say it's a show about witches and magic spells the actual magic is very thin on the ground. The broom flies, woopie-doo, she goes up for DG, ooooh-aaaaah! Boq does a quick change behind a cupboard and comes out silver *gasp* and that's your lot. I've seen better at Sooty and Sweep's Magic Show. Well the script doesn't actually demand that much magic anyway in the show, especially as for the first Act Elphaba is encouraged to not to any magic for the most part. And visually, with the lighting, smoke and sound effects, it adds to illusion and wonder throughout the show. It may not work for you being older, but for younger people going to the show, that is magical, and with a popular score and story, that helps other audience members go along for the ride too.

Ah yes. Today's unsophisticated youth. Or todays older clientele who just can't seem to move on with the times and respect that younger people like different things to what was popular back in the day. Whichever works.

I consider myself in the 'younger' branch of theatre goers (at least I was at the time I saw it) and thought Wicked was grossly underwhelming and overrated. The only "illusion" Wicked provided was that the experience would be worth the value of the ticket, however this illusion was smashed by the time the interval had arrived.

I understand that there are some younger people who don't like it, as there is also older people who don't like the older stuff. I was just generalising much as the previously quoted "admin" was.

I'm looking forward to seeing the new cast tomorrow night. Certainly going into it with intrigue haha. It will likely be my last time going for a little while, probably not until 2018 now, as I will have seen it 7 times by tomorow in just over a year and 19 times overall, and I don't want it to become a bit unexciting like it did once Jennifer left, which lead to me taking a year and a bit off seeing it.

I'm also looking forward to tomorrow! Really intrigued to see Alice and Sophie.
When does the tour start? I'm really hoping for Amy Ross - I don't think we'll get a new Glinda as well as a new Elphaba though.

I'm not sure Wicked does need updating in terms of the magic tricks. I think part of the charm of Wicked is that the big spectacle is really all just smoke and mirrors(!) It's a recurring theme of the show that things aren't always what they seem, and that you shouldn't focus on the superficial.
(On which note, I think Wonderful is a massively underrated song - If there's to be any updating, I propose adding tap dancing to it!)

If so, I demand that they put it back. The music is crying out for it. Also, I keep claiming that all the best shows have tap numbers. This does not sit very well with my Wicked obsession.

This does not sit very well with my Wicked obsession. Not a tap dance, more of a waltz with Elphaba at the moment where Elphaba is spun by the Wizard. There was an extended dance break initally in tryouts and Broadway for this, it was cut though eventually from all productionsl

If they want to put something back in, it should be the giant black witches hat at the start of the show. It was a great throwback to the witch melting.
Or is it still in?? I'm sure it was cut... or am i imagining it??
Its been years since ive seen it

But I agree, I'd of liked that one to stay!

The show opened without the hat and the creators ended up liking it better, so they permanently cut it from Broadway and future productions. (I'm probably wrong, but I vaguely remember reading this somewhere.)

I think I have met two of those people and am aware of all three. 😂
The first was at Stage Door at School of Rovk when I went, the second is West End Wilma and the third is a board member I met at Honeymoon in Vegas haha.

The hat was made of fabric, how could it not fit under the stage? It was one of the few memories i have of the original broadway production. I saw it very early on and then flew back to NYC especially to see it and was gutted to see the very first matinee where Eden went on!

I agree with the above. The atmosphere was electric the moment your walked in, and the cast breathed new and well needed life back into the show! It was easily one of the best performances I have seen of Wicked. Amazing! And not just because of Rachel and Suzie, but the whole cast.

The show had gotten stale, and they bought it back to the magic it was when it has opened 10 yrs before !

Even though I wasn't there that night, I was there 2 days later and the atmosphere was incredible. I still haven't found any other show where the fans are so passionate about the show. Although of course you have your crazies at every show, Wicked still seems to have the most incredible group of sane fans.
