It's his second leading West End role...give the guy a break!

He’s only about 23. Let the lad get some money in the bank before we start sending him off down niche valley. Is that the little alleyway off Leicester Square with the wine bar?

I understand why people think he can only play one type of part but he is young and has had a great run since drama school. I thought that he was fantastic in Half a Sixpence and the Panto and everyone seemed to love him in Dolly.
He'll have a bit more of a chance to mature in this role and who knows what's next for him!

Totally agree with you. He's played the lead in a west end show, gone over to Broadway and shared the stage with two threatrical greats in Elaine Paige and Bette Midler. At 23/24 that is some acting CV. I'm sure he has learned alot for his future career from just being around these people on a daily basis. Good luck to him, I'm sure he will be great.

What? Playing a lead role in a huge West End musical, earning 5-10 grand a week, in a huge Mackintosh show in one of our best theatres in one of our most popular musicals from the 2000’s? How awful!!!! 5 to 10 grand a week?! Not a chance. Perhaps £1.5k if they believe him sort after, but I'd expect even less. Equity minimum for even the largest theatres isn't even up to £500 a week yet.

If the interweb is to be believed, Charlie Stamp was born on 30 November 1993, so he's 24 going on 25.

A lead in a West End show makes a lot more than 1500 a week.

I saw this tour. I don't see the need for a West End revival now. However, it's obviously to cash in on the publicity from the movie sequel but is a whole year later so I don't know how effective that will be.

Cat A (1100+seats) Minimum £694.67 Cat B (800-1099) £631.91 Cat C (Up to 799 seats) £568.60 They are all minimum weekly fees for west end theatres according to the current Equity agreement with SOLT. Anything over that is negotiated via agents and of course all depends on producers but even for the principals, it generally isn't as high as some people might think.

I believe they are regional rates. Not west end.

It's crazy how little West End actors are paid compared to their Broadway counterparts

I'm assuming the more well known a performer becomes the higher they are paid? With Charlie headlining Sixpence, as well as going on Broadway and being an Olivier nominee, I'm sure he'll be just fine.

Anything over that is negotiated via agents and of course all depends on producers but even for the principals, it generally isn't as high as some people might think. A category A theatre West End for Chorus with covers (which most have) means a chorus member in a large scale show will be on 700-800 pounds a week. 694 is the very minimum in this case for someone on stage. Charlie (as the lead not a chorus member) coming straight from Broadway (where Bette was on close to 250k) and would have earnt excellent money, would not be taking a huge cut to star in a massive musical at the Prince Edward that seats over1700. He will and should be on 5k a week minimum. Mary 3-5k, Mr and Mrs Banks 1.5k etc. It’s not that much money! Mary Poppins at the P Edward should take over 5/600k a week (in reality much more). That gives a rough cast wage bill a week at only around 50k. Let’s say 1700 tickets sold x just 30 pounds is £50,000 a show and times that again by 8? 5-10k a week for a leading man from Broadway? Chorus 7/800 Yes.

I really can’t see this selling out the Prince Edward.. I wouldn’t be surprised if it only does a short run. Then hopefully we can get something exciting in there.

There can be other great perks other that salary for a role though. Charlie was given an amazing apartment during his time in Hello Dolly!

Does this mean Aladdin is off on tour ? I imagine it will be, I can see it selling well on tour, although I haven't heard any rumours or know of any theatres taking bookings. I'm sure someone more 'in the know' will be able to tell you though.

I saw a Mary Poppins poster with Lin Manuel on it and freaked out! Then I realized that was the new movie, not the West End revival lol. I hate to say it, but from the look of the trailer ( in which LMM’s dialogue is kept to a minimum), it sounds like Disney may have created a new Dick Van Dyke situation in the dodgy Cockney accent department. From the little I heard, I would say that LMM may be about to steal Van Dyke’s long-held crown in that department 😬. Can’t wait to see the film now to see if the trailer was misleading or if Disney really have made that much maligned error once again. If so, much as LMM is the man of the moment and if they needed an American star in the line-up, surely there must be someone out there that can master a Cockney accent ? Or if not, why not make Bert hail from somewhere outside the sound of bow bells?

Would anybody else love to see Gavin Lee as Mr. Banks in this revival?

Or if not, why not make Bert hail from somewhere outside the sound of bow bells? As discussed in the Poppins Film thread (General Board) it's suspected Disney have deliberately cast that Lin as character part in homage to the VanDyke performance in the original. It obviously not a blind oversight and I'm fairly sure LMM has been quoted as saying he is very aware his accent is not good.

Once again, I would point out that Lin's already been very open about how his accent work is going to blow everyone's mind and not with its sheer Londony authenticity either. It's not going to break anyone's hearts or be a brand new take if you go to see the film and come out going "well that was the worst Cockney accent since Dick Van Dyke", so no need to feel like you're bearing any bad news! Take it as a low-key tribute to the original (I think Jack is meant to have some history with Bert which could explain it, such as it could need explaining) and relax. (Oh whoops, hadn't seen that the thread had gone to page 29, didn't mean to be unnecessarily repetitious there!)

...I think Jack is meant to have some history with Bert which could explain it... Certainly looks like they interact here (remake) in a dance sequence of sorts, which to me look like it has reminiscent qualities.

Went to see Mary Poppins Returns for the third time yesterday at my odeon and during the ads they were heavily plugging the shows return to the west end, with three separate trailers during the 15minutes of adverts. Anyway these ads said that booking was open from 28th January, and as far as I know this is brand new information! I subscribed to the mailing list and haven’t heard a thing.

I saw the film on Christmas Eve and was surprised there weren't any adverts for the stage show, or even other shows (often seem to get one for Wicked with musicals!)

I wonder whether work has already started on the stage version of MP Returns. Wouldn't surprise me!
