Agree with the general tenor of the comments. I just don't think the play itself is much cop, some great directorial stuff in the first ten minutes but the time jumping is brainless given how different a woman's options were in the 1920s to today, which is pretty fundamental given what happens. And as has been said, hard to feel too much sympathy for a lead character who is so lacking in character.

To avoid humiliation when collecting tickets - should I be pronouncing this Mashinal or Makkinal?? Before I went I was pronouncing it Mashy-narl. I don't know why, it's not French and it doesn't have a final "e"! But having seen - and really enjoyed it - I think it's more likely Mash-ee-nul (as in the word Machine with an "L" at the end. It's one of Mike Billington's "101 Greatest Plays" which is why I booked it.
