A nice touch from the Lord. Well earned for Gillian. Although I'm not a massive fan of Cats.

Huge applause for this at the New London last night when he first announced it. I have to confess I’ve never seen Cats but Gillian Lynne is a legend and richly deserving of this tribute.

Nice that it has been done so she can see it in her lifetime too.

Very sad news, a veteran of both the West End and Broadway.
It proved to be very timely to have a theatre named after her good self.
Maybe the mods could move this in the general section, as this is major and very sad theatre news.

Sad news and so soon after the New London Theatre was renamed in her honour. She was only at that ceremony a few weeks ago. But she'd had a good innings at 92 years old and had lived to see her theatre officially renamed.

I've only seen the stills of her from the renaming a week or so back and as she was sat down, we have no idea what she was like on her feet. She did look elderly but not particularly frail but at that sort of age people can go suddenly. In many ways it might be a blessing if she went peacefully as some who was involved in so many shows and probably lived a full and active life could well have not wanted to have a slow decline and not be able to do anything.
Just reading a bit about her, fair play to her as her 2nd husband was 27 years younger than her, the late great Dame Gillian was a bit of a cougar.
Our thoughts are of course with him and her family too,

Sad news but she had a long and respected career and life and that was topped off with the renaming of the New London to the Gillian Lynne.
I imagine they'll be tributes to her at Phantom and School of Rock

Saddened that another Legend of the Theatre in my Lifetime has passed...
So pleased she could see the renaming of the New London in her lifetime.
Honoured that I saw some of her greatest work, so fresh and full of energy and life.
I have a feeling she’ll be on her toes in the Heavyside Layer.
RIP, Gillian, you’ve been amazing!

It's sad of course but what a life! Especially with her husband 30 years younger than her. You go Gillian!

Saw her at the Phantom special Royal Albert Hall and was astonished at her age then, really sad to hear of her passing. So much achieved and a long life.

Even though she was 92, I am still shocked by her passing. I remember when she picked up a BAFTA, I couldn't believe her age. She had the litheness and suppleness of a woman 30 year younger.
I found the tweet put out by her husband moving.

Very sad news. I know her work was extensive and far reaching, but for me Cats was absolutely one of the musicals that changed my life and her influence and work on Cats was (and remains) groundbreaking.
92 is an excellent age though and as others have said, I am glad she saw the New London become the Gillian Lynne.
RIP Gillian.

I too am pleased that she lived to see that special recognition that she so richly deserved. I first came across her inventive work in the 70s during her RSC days with the likes of Once in a Lifetime and The Comedy of Errors. With her work on Cats and Phantom I think she showed the rest of the world that British theatre had their triple threat actors as well. May she rest in peace and be celebrated for many years to come.

She was a fab lady indeed. I always keep forgetting how much she and Maria Bjornson contributed to the ingenuity of the original POTO production.

Very sad news, thoughts go out to her family and friends.
I’ve just read that West End theatres will dim the lights at 7pm tonight in memory.

What a lovely tribute. I shall wear some leg warmers today as a sign of respect and perhaps touch up a nice young man half my age. I think Gillian would have approved.

Both What’s On Stage and Playbill leading websites for the West End and Broadway pay tribute in their leading headline to Gillian Lynne, this just to show how much she left her mark on both sides of the Atlantic and how high she was relished, respected and held in the highest esteem in theatrical circles.
I saw Cats several times as a teenager, in those days there was no internet, so hard to get educated on shows all you really had was cast recordings (Cassette) and reviews and awards, being a youngster the last 2 didn’t even appear on my radar as I was very green, I loved the songs to Cats but didn’t like the show as I didn’t understand why a show would have no real book, at the time I didn’t realise Cats was to be a landmark show as much as Oklahoma was, as the entire show was expressed by beautiful movement, this took the West End and Broadway by storm, they had simply not seen nothing like it. It was only latterly when I came more absorbed by theatre I could appreciate the greatness of Cats, yes it didn’t have a book, perhaps this was what made it great. Where Oklahoma has been replicated, I am sure Cats hasn’t, it has become a singular sensation and this is due the magnificent vision of Gillian.
So it was very fitting that the theatre where history was made, Gillian had the highest privilege paid to her and that is a theatre dedicated to her talent, courage and legacy, which I have to say was just done in time, so with that greatest honour paid only a week before, Gillian sadly passed on yesterday with a smile on her face and just maybe with a foot tapping.

Her autobiography is amazing, as was her life. May her memory live now and forever. Nice Cats reference.
