The reason it was inevitable it would do well at the Tonys is because the majority of people that saw it thought it was better than the other shows nominated. Tonys aren't given for effort or participation they're given for the quality of the show and its components. If one show and its components are superior to every other show that year then that's the show that deserves to win most of the awards.

Or you can, but there's no validity to what you're saying.

100% agree with Nelly, really wish people would stop judging Hamilton because it features rap. To say it doesn't sound like your type of show is absolutely fine, but an opinion saying that you think the show is overrated and didn't deserve any awards, even though you've never seen it, isn't a valid opinion.

I didn't say it didn't deserve any awards, I said I felt it was a little unfair to the other shows that deserved awards too. Hamilton seems okay, but it just isn't the sort of show that appeals to me and I'd much rather see other stuff over it. By overrated I mean that I don't get the hype around it and I'm scared that the hype will fade by October 2017 and won't live up to people's expectations after it sweeped the Tonys and everyone says how good it is.

Put it this way George. Let's imagine a scenario where after the Funny Girl cast recording gets released, someone listens to it but does not choose to see the show. Then Sheridan wins the Olivier. This person then says that Sheridan is overrated in the role and did not deserve the award over the other actors. Would you think that is a fair opinion?

Do you not think the best shows should get the best awards? It sucks that some shows got left out, it really does, but these awards aren't just for fun. BTW In your original post you did say Hamilton was overrated...

I shouldn't of used the word overrated, I mean I don't get the hype that surrounds it. It looks like a good show, but I don't see how it's sooo popular and I fear that it won't live up to the hype in London. That's what I meant

Yes when you put it like that, I understand your point. I agree that the best shows should get the awards and I can't really comment on Hamilton winning if I haven't seen it, I'm going by videos I've seen and the story and songs. What I meant to say originally, was that it doesn't seem like a show that is my cup of tea. I dont know if I'm missing something. The story doesn't appeal to me neither does the style of the music. Hence why I said I'd much rather see other shows over this. Sorry for the way I phrased this by the way, when you said that I understood your point. Sorry for the confusion

Cats.
By far the most bizarre and dated show I have ever seen. Talented cast but I don't see the appeal. The fact they make so much of the "star" role, who is barely on stage, is another thing.

You really cant judge a show by the cast recording. Hairspray never grabbed me until i actually saw it live, in the heights (and i dont like hip hop/rap) i was encouraged to see on broadway and loved it but still never listen to the cast recording

In The Heights totally didn't sound like my thing (I don't listen to Cast Recordings before I've seen a show), but I couldn't have been more wrong. That is all down to cheap tickets though. (Although if you go by most premium prices, I'd say most shows are overrated nowadays.)
I could never say a show was overrated without seeing it, but I could say the publicity and ubiquity is annoying and it really doesn't sound like my thing but that's all.

I have to add that if anyone thinks the Tonys (and every other award show in the buisness of entertainment) aren't a game of politics they're delusional. There are so many stories from history of the Tonys and others to support this, I won't be suprised if some of this season surface at some point..
Was Hamilton the strongest overall show this season? Yes. Did it deserve all 11 awards? Not in my opinion. Is Hamilton a really fun inventive fresh show? Yes absaloutly. Is it the second coming of musical theatre? Nope- but it sure is made out to be in the media, that makes it overrated in my opinion... doesn't take anything away from the great show it is though
But are the awards given on quality alone? Nope no they aren't.

Joseph. I'll never forgive ALW for writing "Benjamin is honest as coconuts"

Joseph. I'll never forgive ALW for writing "Benjamin is honest as coconuts" To be fair...it was Tim Rice. ALW is responsible for numerous crimes but this was not one of them.

I found Kinky Boots overrated. Maybe not THE most overrated, but I had quite high expectations but the book and the dialogue were so basic and pedestrian. They should have consulted Ru Paul for better drag humor. This was very basic. The songs are still good though.

Anyway, it's factually correct. There is absolutely NO court case in the world where a coconut has been convicted of any crime at all. A quick bit of searching shows that although the coconuts themselves haven't been found guilty they have been involved on the defence side of several successful personal injury claims. Considering how many claims they've been involved in and how many times someone else has ended up being convicted in place of the coconut it does seem that they're remarkably skilled at framing people.

I'm sensing a theme here...musicals I can't abide all feature coconuts! Spamalot, Joseph and South Pacific!

Just because coconuts are law-abiding doesn't mean they're honest. They could be perfectly legal compulsive liars for all we know.

I have to admit that I think the current show of Bugsy Malone is very overrated. Went last year thinking it would be great because of the reviews but it felt like a high school production!!

Evita was very... long. And with Marti Pellow mumbling his way through all of the important narration, it just seemed like the story of a woman who likes loudly proclaiming things from large platforms and takes a very long time to die.

I would love to see Evita! We're doing Eva Peron in Spanish at the moment at school and Evita seems great! I'd definitely see it if it toured again

I think that Funny Girl is a bit of a dog. Good idea and two great songs but the second half doesn't work at all. If you have a powerhouse lead you can paper over the cracks.but it's Gypsy's skinny and uninteresting little sister.

Ooer, rude d'James!
For me, the most overrated shows I've seen are Cats, Les Mis, Cats, The Bodyguard and Cats.

It's been said many times, but I'd add my vote for Cats.
and also The Lion King - the first 5 minutes are wonderful, the rest is a letdown. The film is so much better, the stage production does not do it justice.
