I'm there in a couple of weeks - will be interested to see if this works well or not!

Thanks for reminding us of this shambolic idea. I hope it works. Where do the actors go then , to spend a penny?

There is an hidden toilet in the stall behind the box.
With all these expensive sub basements in Kensington, which are pointed out on a slow news day in the Standard, can’t The Vic do the same, but enlarge under the road (The Cut) in front?

I imagine they’d need council permission which is easier said than done

The left hand proscenium arch isn’t that private, let me tell you.

I received the email as I'm seeing the play early in the run - in fact it will be my first London and theatre trip in 5 weeks as I'm currently on sick leave following my 2nd foot op - and feared the email would announce a seating change as I'd booked my (circle) seat with a view to being poised to hobble up to the top level for the ladies' loos as soon as the interval started. So this isn't great news and I may have to contact the Box Office to see what they suggest. It's good that they've provided alternative facilities and won't start the 2nd half until everyone has returned to the auditorium, but it sounds as though the interim arrangement could involve more standing/stair climbing/queueing time.

Hopefully they're NOT emulating the solution to this problem that used to be in place at the Bush, which involved pint glasses and a windowsill.

Here’s what the basement bar and toilet area now looks like!

So the temporary loos are much more like the ones they used to have up at the kings cross Theatre as opposed to festival loos and I’m sure will be manageable during the refurb process.
I still think it’s a missed opportunity not to put on a production of Urinetown though.

Well it was the fastest toilet queue I've ever experienced at the old vic, in fact since it moved all the time it may not even qualify as a queue, all credit for the Old Vic for getting it sorted and very well staffed so we knew what we were doing. Oh and they gave out chocolates, bonus in my book.

Would it have helped if i'd say outside in the covered walkway not horror or horrors inside the toilets and chocolates were wrapped and in a bucket to help yourself cue people stopping to pick their favourite.

Damn, will now have to buy my own chocolates during the interval.
The temporary facilities worked really well whilst allowing the Theatre to operate and never more than a slight inconvenience on my numerous visits.
Looking forward to seeing the changes first hand in the near future.

Still, there was a massive line of women, so even the 11 wasn't enough. I also felt the new basement layout was cramped and the loo entrances were along one wall making it feel almost in among the diners, which didn't work well. The women inside may just have been taking time to 'ooh' and 'aah' at all the changes, and caused a hold-up ;-) I was slightly bemused that the Old Vic signage appeared to show the wheelchair user about to mow down a baby...

Some pictures of the refurbished areas I was there at the weekend, and it is improved somewhat. Much larger foyer and yes, more loos - according to the list I made from the signs, "basement has 1 containing 2 cubicles and 7 urinals, 1 containing 11 cubicles and 1 changing space, 1 unisex disabled." Much easier to get down there as there is a second staircase from the foyer and street. Still, there was a massive line of women, so even the 11 wasn't enough. I also felt the new basement layout was cramped and the loo entrances were along one wall making it feel almost in among the diners, which didn't work well. Looks like they've spent more than a penny.

Seems like the perfect venue and time for a revival of Urinetown.

When humanity can't even organise a piss in a theatre you despair for its existence.
