She's a great actress. But her voice is too classically trained for this rather poppy-score. We can argue about singing, but I think we can all agree she looked much older than the leading man. Siobhan was the best IMO, and at this point I think I've seen six of them. The fact she was older was exactly why it worked. He's gone through trauma in Saigon, returns to US and marries someone who is capable of taking care of him. He has a child with a 17 yr old girl. Maybe Ellen isn't able to give him a child. FGS theatre is more interesting when representation isn't predictable. And the role, like any role in a Musical isn't just about singing! Nobody's talking about Jamie.

Four things I learnt from t'wireless yesterday afternoon:
1. Demand for water increases in hot weather.
2. 11,000 people saw the run of Everybody's Talking at the Crucible.
3. Nica Burns decided she should try and become involved after listening to the other women in the queue for the toilets during the interval.
4. There will probably be a tour either during or after the London run, which will almost certainly start in Sheffield, but at the Lyceum.
Then, perhaps just for Ryan, the presenter played our Martine's new single.

Simultaneous tour? That seems a bit unlikely surely?

Simultaneous tour? That seems a bit unlikely surely? I have to admit, I thought that too, but it's definitely what Dan Bates, the Chief Executive of Sheffield Theatres, said. I suppose he's being optimistic and hoping it will run in London for years.
And don't call me Shirley!!!

You do that. And I'll pray that Sister Mary Ann gets laid. Bitchery aside- which is always something I love and encourage, I think we can agree that we're looking forward to seeing her in Jamie? Yes? Yes. It's so easy on here to be bitchy about performers and remain anonymous. If you met an actor on the street and don't have the balls to say to their face what you can so easily post on here, then why say it here? I think you have to tread with caution, even on sites like this as a lot of industry people may look in from time to time and imagine how you would feel reading negative stuff about yourself?

Bumped into Maranda Hart in the street recently, Sister? Hope not! Preach!

If you met an actor on the street and don't have the balls to say to their face what you can so easily post on here, then why say it here? Michelle Collins, Martin Kemp, Phil Jupitus and Jason Manford kicked the tour off. I stand by what I said - they were AWFUL in Southampton. Those four were 50% of the principals and none of them were up to it! I trust that you spoke to poor Michelle, Martin, Phil and Jason to tell them how hopeless they were? If not, I can only hope that if they read your remarks on here then they're not too crushed.

When I said bitchery, I was being bitchy with you. On Tamsin, I said she was miscast in Miss Saigon, and I said she sounds like a good fit in Jamie, and I think I made it clear that I do not dislike her. Secondly, I'm not anonymous at all. My picture is up, and my name is Ali as the profile indicates. Clearly you're more interested in being confrontational instead of talking shows. Later.

I couldn't disagree more. It seems a modern phenomenon (I blame it on Big Brother) that people somehow think to tell people negative things about them should be said directly to their face. That's not what I want and it's not how I was brought up to treat others. I think this is absolutely the place to discuss whether a performer is correctly cast or miscast. If they choose to read this forum, then they must know it's a risk that the might not like what they see. None of that is bitchy anyway.

Meanwhile, thanks are due to @theatremonkey . No pressure or anything, but solely on your recommendation, I've just booked stall seat X6. If there's a cubbyhole for my bag, I shall have to buy one!!"

Where would one buy a cubbyhole? Wickes, maybe, or B & Q. I suspect it may be taken from me during this time of heightened security.

The video taken from the Crucible does the show far more justice.

Just watched the documentary. Wouldn't have occurred to me to musicalize it immediately, but knowing that the deed is done, I can see how some scenes and situations could easily pop up as musical numbers and dramatic scenes.
There are some interesting themes here that are covered in Kinky Boots, namely about masculinity and father/son acceptance, shame, and coming out in drag. Some of the characters could easily "sing", the mother, Jamie's best friend being sort of in the shadows and second fiddle (but perhaps a poignant number towards the end where she writes him the letter), I can see the mother's best friend being the comic relief and having no filter, the older drag queen playing a father figure to him can also have a step aside child and let me show you how it's done number.
What I didn't get and what I thought was completely manufactured in the documentary was the drag show itself- it seems that all everyone was willing to be accommodating to Jamie to have this show on- where in reality, although he's talented enough, I don't think it wouldn't have been easy to get the coaching, the venue, all that audience out of everyone's kindness of heart.

I haven't seen the documentary but it sounds like the show is pretty true to it, except that {Spoiler - click to view} You never see the drag show or the prom, just the aftermath.

Saw some videos of the Summer in The City Performance yesterday. I can't seem to find the video again now, but there either appears to have been a new song added or they've have changed the lyrics to the finale song.
Will post the video here if I can find it again

Didn't impress me much at west end live but due to all the nominations decided to splurge out on a £10 preview ticket.

I hope you enjoy it. I loved it in Sheffield (as did the rest of the audience). It is very regional though so I'm not sure how they will handle this in the West End, or how non Northerners will 'get' a lot of the dialogue.

Billy Elliott did ok!
I know West End audiences have a rather short attention span but if they could possibly try to get over the "funny accents" as early into the show as possible, they might find they actually enjoy it.

Audiences were able to handle Les Mis even though it was France and Hairspray even though it was Baltimore, I think Sheffield is less of a foreign land than people might believe it to be.

It will definitely need a rewrite for London. I live about 20 minutes from Sheffield and some of the local references which had the audience in stitches went over my head!
