At the start the fund raising of the Globe was amazing. Do you recall the bay they built? The obvious thing is to build up round and round but they realised that people wouldn't understand or visualise the finished building very well so they built a complete bay to let people see what it would be like. After that the money rolled in. And the wall, the named paving stones, the curtain , the events with Prince Philip and the 1000 club, with names up on the wall all strokes of genius that other places have failed to follow. A friend of mine who used to work in the Globe's fundraising team told me that although there were lots of creative fundraising ideas in the early years, they all raised proportionately tiny amounts. Those paving stones basically didn't raise any money because they only just covered their own cost. They are also now faced with a huge cost to replace them all as they have degraded over time and face the dilemma of whether they should carve all those names into them again at great expense. Some of have been covered for years by temporary buildings. A couple of years ago when they remodelled the foyer they had to remove a wall of donors (of people who had paid tiny amounts to be up there) which caused a minor riot from people suddenly appalled to find their small donations from 20 years ago no longer acknowledged (and put more fuel in the Get Emma Rice Out fire). Basically spaces that could now potentially be sold for thousands aren't available because of short term thinking back in the day. Interesting...

Basically spaces that could now potentially be sold for thousands aren't available because of short term thinking back in the day. Interesting... It really is. I was one of those "way back then" who for several years paid to support the idea... and was treated like c*ap for my troubles, along with everyone else who wasn't in an apparent clique. Fascinating that those other well-meaning donors were treated in that fashion too. what happened?

Hmmm tiny amounts on the foyer wall? Not so tiny in the olden days ( the 1000 club was people who gave £1000 either one lump or in staged payments ) and out of taxed income. What do people expect? If you donate to a cause, you don’t expect continued obeisance. I agree the way some alterations to the building have covered the names or had them moved is a pity but even the tiny amounts contributed to the place as it stands with all the good work done in it, Emma's contribution included. The fund raising ideas died out somewhat but maintenaince is harder to sell than bricks. Everyone knows that to raise more dosh you ask the people who have already given and they haven’t done that vigorously enough. I’m sorry if people don’t feel happy. And amusingly I don’t understand the clique reference so proving that either I am very much in it or so far out of it that I am oblivious to any such thing.

It’s a funny old thing, fundraising. When we saw Hamlet at RADA they had ushers with buckets for extra donations on the door, and we walked right by them muttering ‘get out of it, we just paid you a £95 ‘donation’ each!’ Normally the bucket-rattling ushers get me every time but it just seemed cheeky to be asking for more.
If you keep asking the people who have already given, they eventually get fed up. And if they don’t they start to feel entitled to a say in how you spend ‘their’ money.
The best approach is for a lot of people to be giving a little bit each, rather than relying on a small pool of donors.

If only they hadn't already sold the naming rights to some bloke called William Shakespeare, whoever he is.

Not always very high value in terms of ticket yield or donations

Most seat sponsoring schemes tend to have an expiry date, these days at any rate - eg the Southbank centre says "Plaques are in place for ten years, after which we will get in touch with you to ask whether you wish to renew your message". Sounds like the Globe should have had a similar statement in their original fundraising campaigns.
And in other news - apparently the website has completely melted down during friends' priority booking today.

Yeah I saw their tweets. I wonder how big their membership is and how much pressure the site has come under. Only thought the other day that is one site that is normally painless once I've remembered my login but may have thought that too soon.

Did not experience any issues this morning, worked fine and able to book everything I wanted in my usual seating area.
Did the usual NT Procedure, log in prior to 10:00 and refresh regularly, think I may have got access a few minutes before 10:00. All 10 Shakespeare Plays booked along with a trip to the Abbey.

I'm quite possibly the only person on twitter who managed to book everything they wanted painlessly today! I logged in at 9.58am as I wanted Shakespeare in the Abbey tickets and knew there would be high demand for these. Am doing the Sonnet Walk West the following morning (I alternate which route I do each year).
Also have AYLI, Hamlet, Winter's Tale, Othello and Eyam booked. Will look at the rest once I know work schedules.

Twitter reports the Abbey stuff is completely sold out so that's some money saved then I guess.

I had a look about 20 minutes ago and there was still some availability for the Westminster Abbey event.

How sweet. They had a nursery day and made a wood block.

Now the tickets are on public sale they seem to be impossible to get. The website says it is at full capacity but it is a bit annoying that they do not have a queuing system online like the NT so you just have to keep refreshing the page. It also doesn't help that me and what seems to be the rest of London want tickets to Othello. I am not very hopeful i will get a ticket but you would think that they would imagine how much demand they would have so would make it easier to geta ticket.

I managed to buy an Othello ticket at 9.50 this morning. Perhaps links on some pages became active earlier than others.

I'm not even bothering yet. I don't want particular seats, I'll want the yard for everything I see, so after the reports of Friends booking chaos, I figure it's worth waiting until I get home this evening. I'll be ASTONISHED if any of my performances of choice sell out on the first day of booking!

No opening booking the night before to past buyers as in previous years, seems missed opportunity to get some people through in advance. Site crashed before ten for me, dreamt I'd booked tickets, def wishful dreaming.

Just managed to get on after an hour of error messages.
Went for Two Noble Kinsmen as it's something I've not seen before. Lots of seats available for the early June shows I looked at.

There's probably only good availability because their useless booking system won't let anyone buy them. I think now the Almeida system is somewhat improved this must be the worst of the lot.

Best avoid the £62 tickets.

Just got in and did speed booking in case site crashed though actually booking once in very smooth. Only had brief look but if you're still trying tickets available for all things, one date/time sold out for Abbey thing, 2 on limited availability. Right now need to forget how much spent.

Eventually got through and booked everything I wanted to without - once in, of course - no hassle at all.
No dates even close to being sold out yet so don't panic if you haven't got through.
